How to Long-Line Walleyes with Jerkbaits

  • Always on the quest to catch fish using new methods, Wired2Fish's Kyle Peterson encounters the power of jerkbait fishing walleyes during a bass fishing outing. He explores the new technique of long-lining (strolling) walleyes by making targeted casts to active schools of fish using Garmin Panoptix LiveScope, then triggering bites by making on the fly adjustments to his jerkbait cadence.
TACKLE USED (additional links at the bottom):

While trolling hard baits produces scores of walleyes, forward-looking sonar reveals they'll often deny fast-moving lures zipping past, yet eat the same bait fished with a slow and methodical approach. Peterson details how to work deep-diving jerkbaits using the wind and long drifts (long-lining/strolling), then trigger following walleyes by manipulating the bait in response to their mood. This is a cool case study in how fish finder technology is opening the door for new and innovative ways to catch fish.

You're spot on saying they're nosing the bait. I've had them in clear water follow close enough when Im fishing the bank on bluff walls where you can watch them eat. Theyll follow all the way to the bluff wall, in essence pinning the bait to the wall. Their gills flaring and fins moving, like a cat with a mouse waiting for that single twitch that sets them off. That is somuch fun to see!

Those are some killer walleyes. Definitely gonna need to expand my jerkbait arsenal.

Right on Mighty Turtle. Lot's of great baits from a range of manufacturers these days. Can't deny the beauty and action of the 110+2 in clear water though.

Glad you liked it Joe, a little nitchy but always fun figuring new ways to get a fishy to bite an artificial lure.

The shore line looked like it's fall. Wonder when this technique would work best

Was just fishing with a Smithwick Rogue last week and got bit by a 22 inch Walleye. My biggest so far this year!

Catching them on jerkbaits is the best way to get them. They hit so hard

It’s a hell of a lot easer with panoptics

Good, bad or otherwise, we wouldn't never stumbled on this unique bite if it wasn't for Panoptix/LiveScope technology.

shhhhhhhh, why you telling everyone.... most walleye guys look at me weird when I tell them to use a jerk bait and tell me to stick to bass fishing. I've been liking it however and keeping it a secret when guys roll up and ask what I'm using. Now the gigs up and secrets out... lol
not really a secret... most walleye guys are just stubborn to use something out of the norm to catch walleye.
