I really like how David does his master classes. He is technically observant yet really gracious and kind while doing it,

I've attended and participated in many masterclasses. Russell crams more instruction per minute into his classes than anybody else I've ever observed.

These VL preludes tempt so many to try without the required absolutely solid technique and attention to detail , they are so beautiful and at a glance seem so accessible and almost casual but fall apart quickly if the player is over extending themselves, they are full of nuisances and ornaments and every one of them essential to the integrity …. I should know I’ve butchered them for years! 😳😂

It never ceases to amaze me how so many people playing classical are paying no attention to the notes on the page, or the tempo.
There's so much beauty in playing the song as it's written.
This isn't jazz people, come on.

What he means is students these days learn how to play guitar but they don't understand the music. The issue is that people associate virtuosic or really great guitar playing as "play it so fast people can't believe you could play it like that." So they miss out on pretty much the entire tempo of the song, which notes to hold out, which type of tone the note should have, and the dynamics/accents. So the guy can play the song sure but he doesn't understand it it's just a bunch of notes coming out of the guitar no actual music.

      Sorry I didn’t see this.
Yeah he’s right. So many players today try to shine brighter than the music as composed.
It’s about the music; the player is a vessel, not an end in himself. Virtuosity is easy, Paul Gilbert comes to mind - no offence.
Being a perfect vessel for the great composers is a totally different thing.

Watching this reminds how happy I am to be self taught. I can’t stand learning anything in this manner. I can also appreciate how hard it is to teach but I myself will always learn solo. I will say though, that he is an excellent teacher. It must take a lot of patience.

Abraham Villalobos he keeps telling him to play it faster and play along with him in perfect synchronisation which is not
easy and not a good way to learn. I learn all my songs by slowing down the music to about half the tempo to adapt to the fingering then gradually speed up. I know myself where I’m going wrong in my playing and will be strict on myself before I proceed. There’s also the fact that I prefer being alone when I practice. Each to their own I guess.

@@S_dott but a masterclass is different to regular music lesson. David Russell won't be there to see the student's improvement, that's why Russell often asked the students in this masterclass to play along in synchronization, so the student can commit the tempo, accents, etc. to memory.
What you do in your practice sessions is exactly the thing music students should do in their practice sessions.

I feel that anyone who attends a master class like this needs to be a certain standard to begin with. All master classes are about musicality not so much about technique the master expects you to have already achieved a certain level of skill in your playing before attending. I think the master here was being very kind to you in his appraisal .

Ashwin stop moving your body your head when u play u need to sit erect and with a straight posture as by doing so oxygen flows in all of our bodies and our muscles are more relaxed such fancy dancing movements of your head etc will create unwanted tension ..
Watch how John William's sits he sits like a machine....that's the best posture to play effortlessly
