The "idea" was fabulous: while on vacation in Europe, Mr. Kayath, a world known guitar master on his own right, goes around a Guitar Festival rekindling his contacts on the Guitar World while making some time to interview a known fellow guitar master to add not only performance quality but also a bit of historical perspective to enrich his channel's already varied asset. Brilliant, indeed. And what a welcome surprise to see a musician of Mr. Russell's caliber be invited to open up about his early years, and speaking about his initial approach to not only Music in general, but also in how he managed to develop his truly solid and remarkable technique, etc.. This initiative was all nice and unique in YT's musical scenario, so it need to be highly regarded and properly acknowledged. The only issue is that, on a channel devoted primarily to high quality Music, it's really frustrating that the SOUND of such interviews are always this bad. Rather, they're flat out AWFUL. Mr. Russell's voice sometimes results so blurry that it sounds as if he has been interviewed on a very cheap landline phone. Even Skype calls sounds better than this. Any noob knows how mandatory is to check Sound Level and Clarity in ANY recording session prior to give it a greenlit, or even provide speakers with lapel mics, to make all voices sound clearer, in order to record it properly - apparently "any noob"... except the Guitarcoop "pros", unfortunately. I thought this poor recording set up was due to an improvised, a spur-of-the-moment situation created on that Göran Schöllscher interview some odd months ago. I just supposed that the rare opportunity had presented itself, and then people just hurry up and decided to get it on record in any way possible, regardless of not having the ideal means to do so. That was somehow justifiable, if it so happened. Now, seen that mr. Russell's interview here was held in the same set up, at the same place, etc. (including the same terrible set up, with that blinding daylight coming from behind the interviewed), it dawned on me that its poor sound was - and is - a "trend" on these interviews. Sincerely speaking, Mr. Kayath, your channel is a true gift to all, with its varied array of guitar-related subjects, and we are truly grateful and indebted to you for providing such nice content to all of us; just don't do it in this poor way, never ever more. You might also want to surround yourself with better staff, maybe hiring people more used to higher standards, or endowed with a perfectionist, detail-oriented mindset. I just hope that he or somebody from this channel take this rather seriously and upgrade this poor standard, this time for good. All added up, thank you for the interview, anyway... Cheers!
Or just be grateful that we can enjoy this content for free. Mr. Kayath is doing amazing things for the classical guitar. You can complain all you want, but would you rather watch these interviews with poor sound or not have these interviews at all? Maybe these interviews were arranged on the spot, and without any sound engineers? Which would make perfect sense. Why would you bring professional sound guys along on your vacation in Europe?
I really like David Russell as a player, he is a true legend. But I am always left a little bit disappointed when I see his interviews. I've noticed that he never really answers questions in the most practical way. Its always some vaguely interesting story, theory or a joke, he never really dives deep. He always tries a little too hard to be nice and entertaining.
Love David. Took a great private lesson with him at West Dean College in Chichester, England. Great player, teacher and human being.
