The reason she kept dying was because she kept trying to do different things in order to find out who the killer was. If the days are practically identical, what she should have done was make some preparations during the day, but at night do the exact same thing as a previous day up to the point where things went wrong. Knowing how and when the killer would attack would give her a huge advantage in setting up an ambush.

Best theory I've heard yet. Another thing no one has noticed is it doesn't matter how she dies for the loop to reset. Yeah the whole thing starts because the roommate tries to kill her, but merely dying resets it, which means it is entirely possible that anytime she may die, that day will repeat itself. It could be completely coincidental that it happened on her birthday. I haven't seen the sequel yet so will have to see how much more it explains.
I never noticed that, but you also have to imagine that after 50 deaths or so she would be so injured that she'd be close to useless and by death 63 she might as well be a vegetable
There is actually just one simple way to make Tree survive the whole movie. A very easy one. Make her stay in Carter's room. Let's imagine Lori does have a way to track Tree wherever she goes (which I think must be a locating device and not just through Snapchat as she coincidentally took Tree's phone the day before to set up Tree's new ringtone) ; even if Lori managed to track down to the phone to Carter's dorm, it wouldn't actually be an issue for Tree for multiple reasons. First one, as said in the video, the killer attacks only at nightfall.. Lori is probably busy with classes during the day, so Tree would only need to actually try surviving there for around 6/7 hours. Which means that in this short period of time, Lori would have to track her down to the dorm, search the whole building without actually having access to each rooms as the students would be either inside or out (so the doors would be closed), without getting noticed (which would be hard while wearing a full black outfit and a creepy mask) and without any idea where Tree is precisely (as the location device won't tell her that she is in Carter's room). And that's without even considering the fact that Tree would just need to completely turn off her phone so she can't be found at all ; if she does, then there's simply NO WAY for Tori to find out where she is. She doesn't know who Carter is, nor anyone of the sorority they're both in. Carter clearly looks like he isn't popular and seems to only have one friend, so no one would actually know where his room his, said friend excepted. The room is literally the perfect hiding spot. Of course, there's the fact that Lori might just try to kill her the next day, but that is unlikely. Her plan clearly counted on the fact that it was Tree's birthday. She wouldn't be able to give her a poisoned cupcake on any other day, nor she could kill her on the way of the secret birthday party the sorority planned for her, since it's a one time thing. The last option she had was pretending the serial killer at the hospital escaped and killed Tree, which is the only one she can actually use since it isn't related to Tree's birthday. But then again, Tree would just need to sent an anonymous call about how someone might try to help get out the killer, which would put results in more cops being at his door and therefore prevent Lori from making him her aliby. Or Tree could just stay hidden in the room until the killer his sent to jail, as he is obviously at the hospital just for the time to treat his wounds or whatever his reason to be there is.
Doesn't the killer always use a knife like a weapon of choice but she could rethink that , you have a point . Depends on who's faster and more accurate in shooting .

The reason she kept dying was because she kept trying to do different things in order to find out who the killer was. If the days are practically identical, what she should have done was make some preparations during the day, but at night do the exact same thing as a previous day up to the point where things went wrong. Knowing how and when the killer would attack would give her a huge advantage in setting up an ambush.

Best theory I've heard yet. Another thing no one has noticed is it doesn't matter how she dies for the loop to reset. Yeah the whole thing starts because the roommate tries to kill her, but merely dying resets it, which means it is entirely possible that anytime she may die, that day will repeat itself.
It could be completely coincidental that it happened on her birthday. I haven't seen the sequel yet so will have to see how much more it explains.

There is actually just one simple way to make Tree survive the whole movie. A very easy one.
Make her stay in Carter's room.
Let's imagine Lori does have a way to track Tree wherever she goes (which I think must be a locating device and not just through Snapchat as she coincidentally took Tree's phone the day before to set up Tree's new ringtone) ; even if Lori managed to track down to the phone to Carter's dorm, it wouldn't actually be an issue for Tree for multiple reasons. First one, as said in the video, the killer attacks only at nightfall.. Lori is probably busy with classes during the day, so Tree would only need to actually try surviving there for around 6/7 hours. Which means that in this short period of time, Lori would have to track her down to the dorm, search the whole building without actually having access to each rooms as the students would be either inside or out (so the doors would be closed), without getting noticed (which would be hard while wearing a full black outfit and a creepy mask) and without any idea where Tree is precisely (as the location device won't tell her that she is in Carter's room). And that's without even considering the fact that Tree would just need to completely turn off her phone so she can't be found at all ; if she does, then there's simply NO WAY for Tori to find out where she is. She doesn't know who Carter is, nor anyone of the sorority they're both in. Carter clearly looks like he isn't popular and seems to only have one friend, so no one would actually know where his room his, said friend excepted.
The room is literally the perfect hiding spot.
Of course, there's the fact that Lori might just try to kill her the next day, but that is unlikely. Her plan clearly counted on the fact that it was Tree's birthday. She wouldn't be able to give her a poisoned cupcake on any other day, nor she could kill her on the way of the secret birthday party the sorority planned for her, since it's a one time thing. The last option she had was pretending the serial killer at the hospital escaped and killed Tree, which is the only one she can actually use since it isn't related to Tree's birthday. But then again, Tree would just need to sent an anonymous call about how someone might try to help get out the killer, which would put results in more cops being at his door and therefore prevent Lori from making him her aliby. Or Tree could just stay hidden in the room until the killer his sent to jail, as he is obviously at the hospital just for the time to treat his wounds or whatever his reason to be there is.
