According to Her Majesty's Government, "The higher level of attention needed to understand the geometry could distract a driver’s view away from the road for longer than necessary which could therefore increase the risk of an incident." Basically, they're saying that having a correct geometrical representation of a football could cause people to crash? I'm sorry, what?
As I've said before; drivers distracted by this shouldn't be allowed near a road in the first place.

The ball printed on a 2D sign uses the pattern that tesselates a plane to fill a 2D object. There's at least some logic there.
Maybe you could print geometrically correct stickers and stick them over the incorrect sings. I call that mathematical vandalism.

A graphic designer without constraint would be tantamount to unleashing anarchy on the world, this is why we need better regulations for contracting them and some limits to their powers put in place. While we still have time.

They mainly said they wouldn't do it because of the cost, so they cant have picked up on the idea that they only update new traffic signs. Changing the image for future signs would literally just require them to press a few buttons on whatever out of date windows 95 program their using to print the signs, and then our wish would be fulfilled.

Just saw that the Department for Transport DENIED the request:
"The Government considers the current football symbol has a clear meaning and is understood by the public. Changing the design to show accurate geometry is not appropriate in this context."
Also they completely IGNORE the part about only needing to change it for new road signs where they say "Additionally the public funding required to change every football sign nationally would place an unreasonable financial burden on local authorities. The Department could not justify the spending needed as an exercise to increase public awareness and appreciation of geometry."

Was just a really long way of saying "we glanced at this, it's silly, no." They even discuss how the correct sign could distract drivers. Unfortunately they're pulling things out of their arse to make it look like they thought it through.
Kind of like putting bad grammar on a road sign. It will just create unnecessary rage.
They have a habit of doing this - issuing long-winded statements that don't actually address the point of the petition. There was one a while ago calling for a vote of no confidence in Jeremy Hunt, and it got a 700-800 word response that didn't even mention Hunt or his position once, it was just a load of blather about the NHS. They deal with the point they want to rather than the one actually being made.
If someone crashes near one of their non-euclidean soccer ball graphics due to distortion of perceived reality then they are the ones who will be held responsible. They should be sued.

Traffic signs use symbols which enable drivers to take in the information quickly and understand the meaning of the sign. Symbols are often internationally recognised which is important for all road users, especially those who may be unfamiliar to the area.
In the case of a directional sign to a leisure facility (such as a football ground), the symbols used are a general representation of the activity being depicted. As such, drivers can then quickly understand the type of destination. The football ground symbol first appeared in TSRGD in 1994 and road users have become accustomed to its use.

Ironically, I just had to google what you meant by spinning out, but there's still no way the wheels can trace those paths while they're kept parallel, i.e. attached to the car. Unless... could they be on a hyperbolic plane? Anyone?

I'm glad you didn't include changing the existing signs in the petition. I've always thought, if you can make something better, and the cost of changing it is negligible, there really is no excuse not to change it. I wouldn't have signed if it took a lot of money/effort to change.
I think it's hopelessly optimistic to expect the bureaucracy to properly accommodate prospective changes. Come next tax year, common sense will be lost amongst the paper work, and we'll have the Highways Agency tearing down all the old signage.
Unfortunately this didn't matter, because the response completely overlooked that part, and included that one of the reasons they aren't going to change it is because it would be too expensive for them to replace them all!

Yeah. They mention some fair points, like a detailed image being more difficult to recognise at a distance, but also some points I really disagree with, like how the current symbol has become internationally recognised - more recognised than the image of a football itself?? The main issue is of course that they misinterpreted what we were proposing, and as you say, used the cost of replacing signs as a reason against the idea.

The sign depicts a 2D representation of a 3D shape, therefore it is right that it should use all hexagons (which tesselate perfectly on a 2D plane). A front on view of an actual football ⚽ would be a less useful image than the one shown.

VEE727 You can't stop it, every thing you do will merely be another Parker Square of an attempt.
Fish do not look like the fishing sign. First, the operculum doesn't go across their entire heads, that fish in the picture seems to be decapitated. Secondly, the tail is all wrong. It looks like a whale flipper, not a fish tail. Third, the dorsal and pectoral fins also seem to be modeled more on cetaceans (and/or possibly some sort of elasmobranch ...sharks, chimeras, skates, and rays... which ARE fish but don't look anything like the fish in the picture)
So it may not be lovecraftian, but it is a monstrosity from outside of our reality. Actual fish in this universe do not look like that.

I wouldn't instantly recognise that as a football. Great thought goes into UK road signs. There meaning has to be instantly recognised. In this case being geometrically accurate hinders this.
I think the reason you (and maybe others) recognise in an easier way the English sign than then the Italian it's just because you're use to see it.

THIS HAS BUGGED ME FOR YEARS, and I'm glad you noticed too.
The crenelations on that castle sign are far too big. Even assuming the gate is only sized for 1 person and the crenel was waist height as usual that would leave a good 2/3s of the parapet being pointlessly overhead. Moreover given the crenel there wouldn't be enough space for a floor above that window in the symbol (also why is there a window? that's just terrible design).
The fish fins are also oddly positioned, it is possible it's twisting it's body as there's not enough detailing to say otherwise, but it's far from a good sign either.
The elephant could do with some work, as well - it appears to be _Loxodonta_ with the ears of _Elephas_ ...

I am on holiday in the UK for the first time and *just* saw that sign the other day and thought...has that car done a 180 from reverse? My view was brief so I figured I just saw it wrong or the design was bad...now I know it was the latter!

Any driver who is genuinely distracted by a (subtle) change in a road sign should never be let near a road in the first place. Really.
Promoting accurate thinking/representation, however is valuable.
Why politicians (who sometimes can be quite clever, apparently) choose to disregard this is completely beyond me.
Promoting this cause seems at first a bit flippant; but it's essential to a scientific, rational society.
