  • At a few pop culture conventions every year, DKE Toys brings designers and artists together to release a series of limited artist edition toys inspired by the blister pack action figures of our youth. Dov Kelemer chats with us about how the bootleg art toy scene got started and how each artist brings something different and subversive to their resin figures and packaging.

      Bootleg
      1. An unofficial remix that incorporates the complete, finalized original song.
      2. Fake-ass imitations of something authentic.
      I think we can say without any doubt that these are bootlegs by definition.

    To call these figures bootlegs isn't quite correct. They are pieces of pop art that paraphrases the original toys in a parodical way. It's more of a comment about disposable consumption than just another collectible toy, by being just that.

    • @calumryan6328
      @calumryan6328 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    These aren't bootleg toys. That's a whole other thing. Also you'd think Norm would be better at interviews by now. But in every interview his questions are mostly "I incorrectly think this about what you do, can you talk about that?" Fortunately this guy just gave up at the end and answered a question Norm didn't ask and it was the best part of the interview.

      These are bootleg toys. They take copyrighted characters and bootleg their own versions of them, often without permission of the original copyright holder.

    Hold on. I thought bootleg toys referred to knockoff copies that are sold on the cheap in toy aisles of grocery and convenience stores. They would also have names that are very similar to the original, like Star Warrior instead of Star Wars. They were meant to make a quick buck off of something popular. The stuff featured in this video are more in the realm of custom figures or originals that ape packaging designs from Kenner and the like.

    • @professionalvictim7766
      @professionalvictim7766 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the toys featured in the video are not cheap and not designed to make a quick buck, i.e. they ain't bootlegs.

    Judging from this youtube comment section, just...wow. I'm glad, designer toys got a huge exposure, lot of opinions, it's really great to see various different perspective into this thing, that seems to be uncharted teritory for most folks ot there(it's getting more refined and definitive though), that sucklord started in undeground/indie toys, (almost lowbrow'ish art movement) in one of this designer toys genre(bootleg). for you guys that still confused about the term bootleg in this context, go googling : appropriation, popart, fluxus, iconoclastic, D.I.Y culture, or any punk subculture, designer toys/urban toys and also contemporary neo kitsch art. hope you can get a better idea :). ps: btw if you understand the context, and paying attention to the word that Dov said, he actually kind of give the really good answer to all this interviewee question.

  • @confuzedgraphite
    @confuzedgraphite 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my opinion these aren’t bootleg, they’re artist representation of already know figures and being sold as such. The second something is made without consent from the designer of the character but is being sold as official merchandise, that’s when it becomes a bootleg product. For example when China makes unauthorized Marvel figures but is trying to write them off as official, that’s a bootleg product.

  • @SageForsaken
    @SageForsaken 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is not making a custom action figure. This is pop art in the form of an action figure
    Those of us who make custom action figures make them as art but also as a way do things like; 1. make the figure match our vision of the character. When the toy company hasnt. Example my first custom was a destiny action figure in gijoe scale. The only toys they make are lego scale. 2.Get a figure they just havent made yet. Example I made a Gwen Pool and finished it about the same time Hasbro annouced a figure for late this year or early next. 3. Make a cohesive universe all their own. Im on a fb group called TheBrotherhood of UN. A post apocalypse acid rain style customs group. 4 for action figure photography. Sometime you want an ankle rocker on your Batman so you can get better posing. 5 and a 100 other reasons.. The most important is love.

    I would thing of these more as "custom" figures rather than "bootleg." To me "bootleg" implies mass produced cheap copies from old/discarded molds. There's a whole scene of bootleg Transformers toys for example, some of which are actually pretty high quality, that people use to get copies of toys that are either too limited a run or too expensive for them to get otherwise. Obviously that brings up some ethical/moral issues, but when I hear "bootleg toys" that's what I think of.

    • @calumryan6328

      Mecha is a different story altogether... those custom kitbashings can be worth thousands of dollars and are generally beautiful with Jeweler's Precision but.... these... are... not... those

    So they're expensive imitations of pop culture designed to look and feel like cheap, mass produced action figures? And people actually spend money on these things? I bet they're the same people who pay a million dollars for a semen crusted bedsheet with paint thrown at it from a distance by a guy with a ponytail and a beret.

      You’re talking about yourself, aren’t you? Do you still use that bedsheet?

      So it has to be actual mass produced, corporate commercial products, for people to be valid in purchasing? They can't just buy what they like otherwise?

      Leroy, Leroy...Yes, I said semen. It was a reference to the Andy Warhol "Cum Painting" where he basically bust a nut on a canvass and sold it for tens of thousands of dollars. Also, because text has no inherent tone, what emotions you sense has significantly more to do with the way YOU feel than the intent I originally had. Welcome to the internet, where sarcasm reigns and lulz are to be had.

    Please stop letting Norm do interviews. or videos for that matter. He always hijacking the interview by trying to appear smart or weaving his own answer in his own question. Just ask the question and focus on your guest. Nobody wants your opinion.

    Click bait.
    These are custom figures not bootleg.
    Yes, I still would have clicked, but dear god. These things are awful. No way in hell I would buy one.
    I can appreciate the making of the figures, but execution is horrible.
    I guess it's true... Art IS in the eye of the beholder.

      How? Bootlegs figures are created to confuse the buyer into buying them.
      Only figure that might be considered bootleg are the stormtrooper & greedo figures.
      And I would say the dripping stormtrooper (except for the logo) actually is a bootleg.
      All the others are using custom parts or customizing already existing figures.
