    Dear Evil Ted. Thank's SO MUCH for making these AWESOME videos and tutorials!! I'm and old costume maker from a few decades ago, who had a very small business, making mostly Halloween costumes for people (at ridiculously low prices). I'm kind of embarrassed when I think about the materials I used to use: Real hammered copper, bronze, and steel parts. Huge hides of thick leather, animal fur, leather straps, buckles, grommets, laces and real animal horns. I made Viking / Barbarian/ Roman/ Greek/ Medieval armor that you could "probably" actually wear into battle! I never went to a comicon or cosplay type event, but I bet we wouldn't even be allowed inside with the kind of stuff I made! How I wish I knew about the wondrous applications for FOAM when it comes to making cool costume armor! Your videos, along with those of other "Makers" , have inspired me to get back into making some costumes again, for me and one friend (so far)! His niece is getting married and she loves costuming and make up and Halloween so much, she planned her wedding to be a COSTUME BALL/ WEDDING!! How much fun does THAT sound like?? She specifically ASKED for us to make something cool, just like the stuff we made when she was just a little kid, and was actually inspired by our costumes! I cannot possibly let her down on her Wedding Day so I'm pulling out all the stops (as they say) to make something GORGEOUS! We're dressing up as Guardians from the video game Destiny! The Bride's husband to be, is a big fan of that game! Thanks again for ALL your tutorials and helpful hints, when working with this unbelievably versatile material! If I had one (and ONLY one) critique, about ANYTHING concerning your videos, it would be THE 45 DEGREE ANGLES! The angles you often show and describe as 45 degrees, are actually NOWHERE NEAR 45 degrees. To my eye (and I'm a machinist and a carpenter) (I know my angles!) They look more like 70/ 30 or 65/ 35 (depending on how you look at it) angles. Just sayin'! I'm kind of a stickler for details. (I'm SURE YOU of ALL people can understand!) Thanks again for all you do! It is a dream of mine, to actually meet you someday, and show you MY work! If that actually DOES EVER HAPPEN, I hope you will like and appreciate the kind of stuff I can make! Happy Making/ Happy Building Ted! and thanks AGAIN for all you do!!!

    • @EvilTedSmith
      @EvilTedSmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Mike. Yeah I don't say 45 degrees anymore. I say a slight bevel when cutting. Like you I started working in sculpting casting things in hard plastics of fiber glass. Once i found the wonders of foam, I'm not going back. So easy and fun to work with plus you can make a large project without breaking the bank. Thank you for your support and for subscribing.

      Dear Evil Ted, Thanks SO MUCH for the personal reply!! That really meant a lot to me!! I'm a big fan of your channel and your work, and to receive a personal reply from you, is kinda like a teenager receiving a personal reply from their favorite Rock Star!! I told all my buddies at work and my costume making buddy, and they all got a kick out of it too! Thanks man!! You're truly one of the good guys! Keep up the great work and I'll try my best to do the same! I'm really looking forward to creating some really cool looking, costume armor, with this new found discovery (E V A Foam), and I have YOU, most of all, and a few other makers, to thank for my new found inspiration!!

    This may be a stretch due to resources and materials, but Ted would you consider doing specific cosplay types for a multitude of genres. Making something sleek for a cyberpunk cosplay with thinner materials or a ridiculously over the top fantasy style costume for people who wanna go balls to the walls in those regards.
    I think it would be awesome to watch in creation.

    Great video but your mic seems really off centre. It's so extreme it feels like I'm deaf. Worst of all its not even mono so the right sound comes in occasionally which worsens the effect.

  • @spartan456
    @spartan456 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, this is really cool! I've always been interested in trying to make stuff like this but I always thought I'd need a lot of expensive materials and equipment. I'm surprised to see that something as cheap and pliable as floor mat foam can be used to make some pretty cool things. I like how at first it looks confusing, but once you start to see the pieces come together it all instantly clicks and makes sense.
    I think I might try my hand at making some things. Thanks for all the videos you've put out, I can tell you have a lot of love for this work and I'm glad that you're willing to share your knowledge so freely with others.

    Do you think a robocop chest plate could be made using this method? & would it require a lot of individual pieces joined together ? (robocop's chest plate measures 53")

    • @scorpionwins6378
      @scorpionwins6378 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a fun and relatively easy build. How is that coming along?

    • @nigeldonaldson1647
      @nigeldonaldson1647 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scorpionwins6378 NOT so easy even with cardboard patterns/templates, packed with, clay in between (the approach that I used, like how they used to sculpt car body chassis) & in 1/6 scale, but ive suceeded after MANY years. and it's all made of fibreglass inpregnated with bronze powder. I.m currently working on a 1/4 scale 18" version.
      when I first started I didnt know about- Pepekura method, and gluing foam portions together plus 3d printing didnt exist yet. with anything machine like the challenge is always symmetry I find. do you like the ROBOCOP design? I think its the best looking man in a suite robot design ever put on film

    • @scorpionwins6378
      @scorpionwins6378 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nigeldonaldson1647 yeah I was a huge fan of those movies growing up. Loved the aesthetic of the body armor. Sounds like you've been very busy, I'd love to see some of your work. You should upload videos.

    • @nigeldonaldson1647
      @nigeldonaldson1647 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scorpionwins6378 easy NO! I wish it were, there are big problems with symmetry, angles of curve (especially trying to get each breas to align) & the rib cage type portion making it the same height on both sides, & then we come to marking the precision detail, & thats just the chest plate, its really a job for a car body designer at Ferrari or Lamborgini

    If you do a lot of paper pattern drafting, I highly recommend a pattern maker's hole punch tool. It's cut the exact shape of those registration marks. It saves a bunch of time if you have to make a lot of them and saves your knife blade from getting dull too. Great video, very useful! P.S. those sanding sticks are a Fantastic idea!

    Hello Ted (from a Ted). Great work and keep 'dem videos coming!!
    I met you a few weeks back at Anime Los Angeles and you set me on this path with my daughter (Anastasia Hunter who supervised the programming room raved about your work). So, after watching the video and knowing you had to edit it, at about 4:00 mark in, you have pinned a piece of foam to the chest piece. I understand that this is to get the curve to the piece that attaches to the chest. I then watched you transfer the curve to paper and viola at 5:32, you have that paper piece that connects to the chest. My question is how did you determine how "wide" to make that piece of paper and while i understand the mechanics of the first line you drew, how did you the "back" line to create that pattern??
    Pardon my detailed question, but I only cut my first piece of Foam yesterday :D . I've already watched all of your Foam Armor videos and I'm taking lots of notes :D
