- How to Make Superhero chest armor out of Foam! I really wanted to have a generic chest armor template available so that people could customize it to make a variety of different characters like Batman, Gambit, Wolverine, and of course Red Hood. This chest armor is setup into modular pieces that can easily be customized to fit each individual maker. I do have free PDF templates of the chest armor available on my website if you'd like to make your own. In this Part 2 video I go over the steps to create the back armor as well as the painting process

Watching you build and paint is always an adventure and an education. Thank you, Steve!
You’re welcome!! 🙌🙌
Definitely gotta release a female version of this armor. Love it so much 😢❤
I need a female version 😩
I would suggest varying the angle of the chest piece..... unless you want boob specific version
Stunning as always! Would love to see you take on making the Halo Master Chief Under Suit made out of HD foam. There are a lot of 3D models available for 3D printing the base armor and helmet but no one has really come up with a realistic under suit since it is supposed to be a flexible material almost like a wetsuit. Using your 2mm and 4mm foam I think could make a very screen accurate version that you could then put 3D printed armor over it. Or just go ‘full Monty’ and make the base armor out of HD foam as well!
Thanks! 👍
J'avoue que la sous combinaison serait super 😁
The detail of what can be achieved through foam is incredible. Not only that, but it can be done without the layer lines of 3D printing. I love printing but this is a different kind of art. Different workflow.
I feel each has their own place in the cosplay community but yeah this is my go to. No waking up to a pile of spaghetti 🤣 and if you think this is detailed check out my elden ring video where I use both foam and printing to bring that armor to life 👍
@@SKSProps I love that build! You know what would be a great subject? Making a suit movable while seemingly seamless. A very talented artist did a Spawn suit. It looked great. Not like armor in the shape of a Spawn suit. How? I feel like it is not just in practical cuts but intuitively... I feel like it has something to do with aesthetic.
watching you work is a pure entertainment
Thank you very much!
It's absolutely insane what you can do with foam and some paint!!! I love Halloween and the more I try to build costumes off essentially just Amazon and Hobby Lobby and get close but not close enough, the more I realize I want to join this awesome world. Obviously you got next level skills but even a piece half this good is still worlds better than what you can buy. Do you have a beginners guide? I wish there were classes locally just to get started. Great vid.
Thanks! I have lots of beginner videos all with free templates. And definitely check out the how to cosplay using eva foam video for a list of all of the tools and materials needed 👍
@@SKSProps Awesome, thanks. got a sub as well.
Absolutely love all these tutorials you do. They are easy to follow and very simple. I was wondering if you would ever make some tutorials on weathering props or armor?
Thanks! I’ve already got lots on the channel check out the Fallout Chest armor, sandman helmet, Mythosaur skull, eva foam to look like leather etc
@@SKSProps I will do that! Thank you for such a quick reply.
You do such awesome videos! I just want to get started with foamwork and already ordered all thicknesses of your hd foam😊
We just built a prop respirator device (i think thats what its called) for the firefighter costume of our son. I wish we would have found your channel earlier🤣
I think im going to build a lot of cool stuff for the kids... and well for me🤣
That is fantastic to hear!!
Thanks for the template, rad tutorial. Your foam looks so smooth and clean, gonna buy some when I run out of the generic I have. I needed break from foam builds for a few months and this has got me back in the game.
Thank you!! 🙌🙌
At 9:40, did you spray the clear coat all over? Or just on the section under the pecs?
@@antoniamakridakis1289 dusted the clear coat over all of the armor
@@SKSProps thank you for such a fast reply! Love all your videos!!! So helpful for beginners 🎉💖
Man…I Love your videos…Very easy to follow and clear instructions…
Glad to hear it! Thank you!
This is brilliant. Thinking of slightly modifying this for Saiyan armour.
I have another video specifically for saiyan armor already on my channel
just was in need of this for my deathstroke cosplay as i have already made the helmet. big thanks! and again shoulder guards or wrist guards tutorial would be great
Glad I could help!
Thank you soo much for this. I was really struggling trying to get around armoured cosplay.
You’re welcome! Have fun with the build 🙌
Ok. I have to ask before making. Can I do summer saults on the ground without breaking this apart?
No problem about some damage. It will look even more realistic. I am just worried about it getting scattered all across the floor afterwards.
It's foam, it wouldn't break apart as long as you glue it properly. But you'd need to make sure the chest is sepereated from the stomach armor with elastic that way i tcould stretch and give movement. I don't know why you want to be on the gound in your armor but it's your call
@@SKSProps Thank you very much for the reply. It will be very helpful.
And, about the being on the ground part, it is to see if stunts can be made while using it. Especially for superhero characters.
I made this armor it it looked pretty good great template
Glad you like it 👍
@ yeah
Have you ever thought over using elastic to connect the separate pieces? I did that with a Batsuit i made for my daughter years ago and she found it more comfortable as she could move more freely and the suit easily moved with her. just a tip. awesome armor by the way. im going to try and make this, but with elastic. love the videos, keep it up man
Yes, I mentioned it somewhere in the videos for mobility. And thank have fun with the project 👍
Another awesome video, Brother! TY so much!
Bro that is amazing work keep up the good job
Thank you very much!
you got the skills man
Thank you very much!
Looks excellent. the graphite looks like it could be a great time saver on metalic weathering.
I love watching these come together gives me a ton of ideas. Just a note the heat gun isn’t available at blick right now grrr.
Thanks! and looks like they changed to a newer model I'll update the link!
Steve, awesome armor.
If I wanted to make the pecs and abs from metal; what would I use to attach the metal to the foam?
Scuff up the back but contact cement or e6000 would probably work
Thx u for the Templete SKS..
I want to ask, do you have template for the Neck guard?
Thx u 😊
You're welcome! No i don't hav the neck armor watch my last video on how I template, make some foam rulers, and have a crack at it
Hey man i was wondering, for about what size is the template for? M or L? Other templates ive used usually say for about what size is the template is made for and about how much bigger it should be printed for larger sizes.
Love this cosplay!
The template is already scaled for large (watch the how to print templates video.) but it doesn’t really matter because all of the pieces are modular and can be glued in a way to fit most body types
@@SKSProps ah okay, thanks!
@@SKSProps friend, how are you, look, I just saw your tutorial and I think it is the best I have seen so far, I wanted to know one thing, how could I modify the measurements for my body, it happens that I am a size M and these insoles are too big for me :( How could I modify them for my size, what program can I use, thank you very much
@@uni23tre35 watch my how to print templates video then just change the scale if necessary but all of the pieces are modular
@@SKSProps okay friend, it's okay, thank you very much, I'll see how things are, I'll let you know if you have any questions, thanks for the support
Hey Steven, I really loved your video, it could work for one I'm making, could you make a video with daredevil's chest? I'm trying to make this great cosplay but I'm still a little confused in the process
Baddassery as always yo🤜🤛🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍
Thank you! 🙏
omg .......Steve if your chest armor was used with one of Evil Ted's head pieces & weapons that could be one helluva cosplay look .
so fire bro! sheesh!
Appreciate that 👍
Is the reason you heat seal your pieces before gluing so that you get a better gluing surface with less absorption or so that when heated later it doesn't shrink and pull on the glue?
Actually both to an extent. Sealing helps the glue attach and not soak in. I’m not really worried about the pieces shrinking because I only lightly heat seal but a heat gun can loosen contact cement. Also why I use a lot more super glue than contact cement
Hey Steven! so, question about paint jobs on cosplay. I made the chest and back armor of this particular piece as well as a full batman costume with a helmet that has foam clay on it to fill in the gaps and I live in an area where it rains A LOT. I've been concerned about my paint job and the foam clay getting ruined by the rain if I were to go out into it like if I was in a parking lot and had to walk inside the building I was going into.
so what do I do to waterproof my cosplays?
thank you!
You still need to Plasti dip on top of the foam and foam clay to seal the surface. It’s a rubberized coating that is waterproof. And any acrylics you add on top are also waterproof once dry
Okay, that's what I thought! I used plasti dip on the whole thing and even on the foam clay parts (sprayed it about 11 times on those parts just to be sure lol). thank you for relieving my worries, man!
Have you ever painted these armor gold? What paint do you suggest? Do I still prime it with the black?
For gold armor I’d recommend to prime it using a red. Like Krylon red oxide primer. It will help the gold look richer. For the acrylics I like golden brand iridescent bronze it covers really well and has a great sheen
What would you consider must haves in terms of materials especially when it comes to colours?
There is such a big variety out there that i dont know where to start.
What colours have you used in this video for the black and silver parts? And are there differences for these graphite powders?
Sorry for the dumb questions🙏
First off they aren’t dumb questions. Check out my how to cosplay using eva foam video for all the basic tools. For colors just make sure you’re buying heavy body acrylic paints doesn’t matter the brand. Other paints are cheaper but don’t cover as well and end up costing more in the long run. In every build video I do I will show the colors I’m using before application so you can always jot them down. And there aren’t really differences in the graphite powders. You can even sand pencils
@@SKSProps awesome thank you very much!
That plasti dip thing.... do u use that for everything??
@@swissShadowbox I bounce around between different primers but plasti dip is the easiest to apply. I have also used mod podge, flexbond, and creature cast
Please forgive my ignorance but I’ve. Seen the metal blocks with holes in them on several different cosplay tutorial channels. Can someone please tell me what exactly they are and where you can get them?
1-2-3 block on amazon
Heya when you say you are doing a wash of the Mars Black, are you thinning it?
Yes a wash will always be cut with water 👍
hola ..como optengo un pdf con planos para un cosplay de bumblebee..
it wouldn't be pdf it would be pepakura. you need to follow groups on facebook like pepakura library
Beautiful!
Hi Steven
I think I already said it, but thanks for the Spanish translation (I write this with google translator), it's great that this armor, as you say, is generic because I see it matching wonderfully with Dr. Doom's mask (which I did recently )
Thanks and greetings from ARGENTINA

Hola Steven
You are very welcome!
I think I applied too much paint. I have ripples on my surface after using the damp paper towel.
Any suggestions to fix it?
You just need a wash of paint. You can try to wet sand back down some then reapply
How are you doing a wash of the paint?
@@sterlingstudios1227 wash just means add more water than normal to thin it out. Add water depending on the pigment count of the paint
Wow, so cool that you replied so quickly. Thank you! I just finished the black primer and am about to do the black wash next. I used your templates at 85% printing to make my son a Batman armor for Halloween. This is going to look amazing. Thank you for the detailed video.
I wasn’t able to find this back piece on the listings on his website of templates? Does anyone have the pdf?
It’s right next to the chest armor template, look again
@@SKSProps Thanks so much! it must've been displaying weird on mobile earlier in the day, just found it on my PC
You should make the Red Hood Helmet
Fantastic again
Thank you!
Is it hard to bend your back with this strapped on? If so, what if you didn't glue the bottom part of those "Y"-shaped parts? Wouldn't that help with "mobility"? But perhaps it's all good as it is 🙂
Nice build anyway 👍
I guess it wouldn't make much of a difference.
No mobility is fine
question:
You'll make the Red Hood helmet? :O
(i love ur videos)
You should make a batman chest armor 😊
Can I use strings instead of parachute clips
It’s your build use whatever you’d like 👍
@SKSProps I meant to say that parachute clips are very expensive here
Very cool 😃
great job
Thanks!
Will you build a Batman cowl
No
Do you use 3mm thick foam or 6mm thick foam?
@@Noburger22 this armor is primarily 6mm and 10mm
Você é o melhor
Thanks! 🙌
Im going to build it this weekend what amount would you say I need?
You need a sheet each size 2,4,6,10mm with plenty left over for the next build
@@SKSProps got it thanks I'll link my results on your social!
I have a question... we have 2 kids. Which parts of the work, beside the cutting are harmless and doesnt require safety equipment? Because i think my son would definately want to help at some point😅
you can have him help trace the patterns and cut, but for the sanding you are going to want to have at least dust masks and eye protection for both of you.
Thank you for the support and for wanting to do this process safe
@@SKSProps alright! Thank you so much! 😊😊
SKS the file on the back of the armor the extension instead of being .pdf is +pdf and when downloading it does not open; For those who don't know, just change the symbol + (plus or sum) for a . (spot)
deleted it and uploaded a new version hopefully that works now
Next mask red hood
I don’t know if you will see this but are you using a lot of super glue?
I use super glue and contact cement. Super glue keeps the build cleaner
Starting back armor at the spine seems like starting chest armor at the nipples. But man, it seems to make sense now that I watch you do it.
Puedo obtener los moldes ?
