  • TalkTV's Mike Graham hits out at electric cars after dealers slashed EV prices by up to a quarter in a frantic bid to stimulate sales.
According to market analysis by What Car? the average discount on a new EV has increased by 204 per cent since last January and comes after the Lords Committee warned the Government that UK drivers are turning their back on the electric transition.
Mike says: "The electric revolution has stalled in the slow lane".

These things are a huge hassle, all those lost hours sitting in those charging stations, huge anxiety, plus a outrageous expense in the long run. Good luck trying to sell a used Electric car with wore out battery modules. You'll find out nobody wants to pay the ridiculous price of batteries ... Batteries are very ... very expensive to replace ( thousands and thousands of dollars) ... and make no mistake, you will be replacing them. These batteries are highly toxic to our environment and a constant concern for fire, also a high potential for disaster to our surroundings. These new specialized automotive grade batteries ... are not green clean energy by any means... Don't fool yourself and certain don't listen to a manufacturer or salesperson, ... they will say anything, do anything to make a sale .

Lol, I used a public charger 4 times last year and have 2 EV's in the household. We drove a combined 45,000 miles in 12 months and have paid almost nothing per mile driven. Our waiting time to charge in 12 months has been equivalent to about you visiting a pump 6 times.
Batteries are also 95% recyclable and consume less energy to extract materials and make new batteries than mining from fresh.... And that only if they haven't already been used for 2nd life applications.
Also cobalt, not that you mentioned it, is now barely part of battery manufacturing any more, but it's still used as a catalyst for reducing sulphur in your fuel, as it has been for decades.
Yes EV's still have downsides, but wind the clock 140 years, you would have been criticising the ICE cars at the time and thought nothing would come of them. Don't believe all that is said about EV's and just be mindful of the fact that it's a young market with huge strides still being made.

"Buying a car means that you own the vehicle once your payments have been made. A lease is an agreement to use a vehicle, new or used, for a certain number of months and miles." The leased car doesn't belong to you, it is part of the fleet of a leasing business and you have to return it at the end of the leasing period, they can then sell it as a used car. In biased stats with an agenda, they count this as a fleet buy as a desperate attempt to hide the fact EV sales keep going up and up.
Another fact they fail to mention in the UK is the BiK ( Benefit in kind ) EV tax rules that allow anyone that owns an Ltd company to by an EV with amazing tax benefits making a huge difference. They can then use the car for personal use completely legally. For example, even though I'm employed full time I have a small eBay business and an Ltd, if I bough an EV new ( I bought mine used ) I'd definitely take advantage of BiK and my car would then count as a fleet buy.
My main point though is that fleet or no fleet doesn't matter at all, a sale is a sale. When someone separates it it's a symptom of an agenda so they can create a completely misleading title that gives the impression that EV sales are declining when in reality it's the exact opposite, they know most people are too lazy to dig deeper.

Ecological devastation is a bleak reality
The environmental fallout from lithium mining is clear and far-reaching. Massive quantities of fresh water, classified as a precious resource in these arid regions, are diverted for lithium mining operations, fuelling the salt flats brine. This leaves local communities and wildlife parched. Sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide used in lithium extraction penetrate the soil and water, poisoning ecosystems and endangering species.
Deforestation, habitat destruction and water pollution further exacerbate the ecological toll. The delicate balance of nature is disrupted, which leaves long-lasting damage that takes generations to heal. The carbon dioxide and other greenhouse emissions that come with the process of lithium mining, extraction and overall production are worse for the climate than the production of fossil fuel-powered vehicles.'
      and another

As demand rises, the mining impacts are “increasingly affecting communities where this harmful extraction takes place, jeopardising their access to water,” says the report.'

The use of evaporation ponds to separate the lithium requires huge amounts of water. In fact, in order to produce just one tonne of lithium, nearly 2.2 million litres of water is required.
The water comes from underground sources, something that has been linked to the depletion of groundwater levels in surrounding areas of land which is inhospitable and un-farmable.

The reasons they are citing are the high repair costs, length of time it takes to repair them and the potential of them catching fire & causing catastrophic damage to themselves and their surroundings, all of which, make them a huge liability to insure.
Current sales are a reflection of this and the many other associated cons of EVs ie: lack of infrastructure, range & range anxiety, charging times, high repair costs, unpredictable battery life, low resale value etc ... as mentioned.

Also, any secondhand EV that has been charged using a fast chargers will have a battery that will give up quicker I read the other day. So Dealers have to sell new EV's to meet targets so why would they bother stocking used ones?

Australian here. I lived in central London for three years from 2017 and noticed the air quality was not good (like much of Europe and industrialised countries) and I developed an interest in this. The MAIN benefit of electric vehicles is the air pollution-sparing effect - I think this is more important than the greenhouse gas emissions - at least initially. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health estimates that 44 000 people in Britain die each year from preventable air pollution most of which comes from vehicles. This pollution hangs around around roads locally where it is produced continuously. This is a major health problem that is not yet in the public mind - nor sufficiently in the minds of politicians. These health risks are not just a slight breathing difficulty or asthma exacerbation but cancer, diabetes, dementia, atherosclerosis (heart attacks and strokes), obesity, pulmonary diseases, fetal and child development problems, cataracts, immune disorders, neurological disorders, higher risk for some psychiatric conditions such as depression and the list goes on. Globally about 6.5 million people die from air pollution yearly. So drive combustion vehicles if you must but consider the effects on yourselves and others, especially children both born and unborn.

Imagine if we all had EVs and ICE was the new tech. They would sell like hot cakes. 2 to 3 times the range, refuel in 5 minutes, no range anxiety, it will have twice the life, cheaper insurance, fewer new tyres, it won't get written off for a minor crash and won't depreciate vertically.

Yes but you MUST visit a place to refuel it and pay 10 times the price you pay to drive a car you could fuel at home.
Those lovely smelling emmissions from the exhaust are so nice too.
Don’t worry you’ll surely save money on all the cheap maintenance on the engine to prevent it from rattling apart. Oil, filter, plugs, all that stuff costs nothing and hardly ever needs done.
Never mind I’m sure it just great and refreshing going outside in -2 to scrape ice from the windshields, breathing in all the fumes from the warming engine, while your family look at you thinking “what a fool, we could have had a self defrosting electric one”

The whole EV thing is falling apart, with fires, insurance costs and charging problems it’s now dead in the water, the prices are another problem plus there worth salt secondhand who in their right mind would invest in going electric ??? Forgetting the safety aspect of these vehicles I’ve said right from the start that not enough thought has been put into production and the charging of EVs is pitiful and the mere thought of trucks being battery powered is fantasy given the mileages these vehicles cover and the places they go. Until they install nuclear power into these vehicles with all the danger’s that goes with that I don’t see a future for electric vehicles any time soon, if they were cheaper to purchase than an ICE vehicle I still wouldn’t want one let alone pay a premium price for one, Teslas days are numbered given the number of fires in their vehicles and one man died when it went on fire and he couldn’t get out because the doors wouldn’t open, who would buy a vehicle like that ???.
