    Two words.....magic eraser! Gets ink off, they ARE magic. LOL I washed highlighter ink off a cardboard puzzle box with one. Try that for removing the ink from the plastic. Also, I'd use a blade for cutting plastic on my compound miter saw that then risk cutting my hand with the saw the way you were fighting with the cuts and also sooooo much faster. :)

    These look great, but you'll never have the ability to clean them out. If you glue the back disk to the Trex, and screw it in from two sides, you'll be able to clean it out every year, and most birds don't like previous bird nests, and/or field mice nests left in there

      Pros say to keep the doors open so other things go on there over winter like mice. I have cleaned mine out and found mice in the bird house and realy stunk like piss. If you place a little stick right below the hole, other birds can stand on it and interrupt the bird in it. I am not trying to nick things down

    PVC gives off small quantity of gases which could be detrimental to birds.
    Although great idea to use PVC, I would not recommend it as a birdhouse or a feeder product. Just my two cents into the mix.

    • @kennyc388
      @kennyc388 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Birds will generally clean out a house and rebuild the nest to suit their needs. I have had birdhouses for over 40 years and have NEVER cleaned one. It is amazing to see the awesome variety of nesting materials that the drag out. I always build my houses from cedar and rarely finish or paint them and never install a perch. I generally have over 20 houses in my very large yard. From my experience, many birds seem to like a simple rectangular box with good drainage and a horizontal oblong entrance hole as opposed to round, and positioned to one side of the front of the box.

  • @jimmie200
    @jimmie200 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Just for your info: A birdhouse should never have a perch. A perch allows predator birds to hang onto the birdhouse and get to the babies easier. The perch evolved as a decorative thing. You can look at farmers who have very large vegetable gardens and have lots of birdhouses; the houses don't have perches.

    • @bootnreboot7456
      @bootnreboot7456 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      exactly jimmie200 , birds naturally use a rotted out hole in a tree for a nesting spot, mother nature does not come around and stick a perch in the tree for the birds to use but people think they need a perch. All of our nature center blue bird house kits do NOT have a perch.

    • @20greeneyes20
      @20greeneyes20 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      How true, no perches needed

    • @tinkerdude1394
      @tinkerdude1394 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      jimmie200, the perches just make it easier for the birds to get in and out. Predators can get in just as easily whether its a perch, scratchings or nothing at all. The bird houses just give better protection to the birds as apposed to a tree. It makes sense if you think about it. 👍

    What birds are you hoping to attract ? It looks a large hole for a such a small nest. It’s advised that there be a 12.5 cm / 5 inch drop from the bottom of the hole to the floor which stops predators like squirrels putting a paw in and scooping out a chick. Adding a few drainage and vent holes would be of benefit. How will you be able to clean it ? I don’t mean to be critical but helpful. The concept is great but maybe a few changes would improve it.

    how you clean them out end of the nesting season.....It's a good idea to clean out your nest box once the young birds have fledged. ... Building a new nest in a new location also means predators are less likely to find the nest site before the young birds fledge. However, for nest boxes or birdhouses, NestWatch suggests cleaning out the box at the end of the season.

    cool idea but not sure birds like plastic, you should really spend a few minutes on google to get the proper specs on a real bird house, the size of the hole is very important and perches are a no no...

    • @DIYeasycrafts
      @DIYeasycrafts  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct size of the hole is very important. I have found that birds do like the plastic birdhouses but do prefer the darker brown trex structures. As for the perch I know several viewers say not to use them and that is an individual decision. I kind of get a kick out of seeing mother birds standing on the perch and feeding chicks through entry hole.

    • @Zybrdog
      @Zybrdog 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I love the idea of PVC because it's water tight (the material itself) and it will definitely last forever. however it's not a very natural feeling material and the bird will prefer wood like material as you pointed out but with the competition and lose of habitat they will use it anyway, kind of like low income housing in the wild. :)
      As for the perch it is an individual decision because you are the one building the house and the birds will stand on anything perch like. The reason the birding community recommends against perches is that it becomes a link to other unwanted birds and predators like squirrels and cats that will use the perch to hand on to while reaching into nest. Not they won't try this without the perch but it gives them and advantage . This is why height of the entrance in relation to the floor of the house is also important to keep chicks out of reach of predators and doubling the thickness of the door helps also.
      And not to make an essay out of this but just to mention the things i consider when making a bird house are ventilation, drainage, access to open and clean in the winter. And one last thing would be, especially for a material as slippery as PVC is to make some groves inside the nest under the entrance to help chicks clime out when they're ready to leave the nest. Tons of more info on that on the web but keep in mind the type of bird you're targeting so you know exactly what size everything should be. Good luck and keep up the good work.

    • @Zybrdog
      @Zybrdog 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the reason they recommend against the perch is because predators will use it to get a grip while reaching into the house, the birds will certainly use it but they don't need it. it is to protect the birds, so you have the choice of making a better house... up to you....

    No way to clean out the nest after use and it also needs ventilation at
    base or otherwise it'll get very damp & mouldy (from chicks themselves and waste
    & food & condensation). If made too shallow, (entrance hole too low) chicks can fall out and predators/birds can reach
    in. No perch needed, predators can use it! Also without drilled ventilation
    holes it can get too hot inside for the chicks. -otherwise very good!

    Many thanks, I've been looking for "simple birdhouse designs for kids" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Daniliana Birdfly Babar - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my cousin got amazing success with it.

    No need for any of the silicone. You will drive away the birds with the chemical smell. Just find a way to use stainless steel screws. No silicone. Also how do you take the house apart to clean it. Obviously you know nothing of bird house building.
