Acetone + plastic is a well known "glue" for model makers
If you need specific colours Lego blocks disolve well in acetone.
Thats a great tip thanks you so in reality if you had small moulds, you can recreate things like radio buttons etc. make custom interior mods.
That’s a great tip-but my stepson would 💩 if he saw all his legos melted down like that😂
@@johnnyx53😂😂
Lots of Volvo guys that repair turbo brick 80s era wagons use lego to fix their dashes
Do you know what kind of plastic? Polypropylene different from polyethylene, etc. I have always struggled trying to fix broken plastic, this looks slick. Also, is this nearly as strong as original?
Did not know this was possible.
@autophreaktrishield
I used this along with some window screen to patch a gray water tank in a RV years ago. held better than any patch!
I just use baking soda and super glue. Instant fix with no waiting for hours at end for acetone to do its thing with plastic.
You will be disappointed to know it turns into powder in humid environment within 6 months. I learnt it the hard way. Living in tropics.
I use Permatex Plastic Welder. It’s black, hardens like a rock in 10 min and can be drilled, sanded and filed.
But you pay for it- bugger that.
It's $15 for 25 ml. That stuff is expensive.
Just a tip if you rub wax onto a part that doesn't need to be fixed but you want the same surface finish in your repair you can use hot glue in the undamaged area to take an impression of the surface and then use the hardened hot glue as one of your repair sides and you will get a near seamless repair. As far as using the ABS it's fine as long as your in a well ventilated area and using proper PPE. Plus you will get a better molecular bond using the same material and a matching color. Which is better then Epoxy.
Yes, Thank you so much!

Can I use acetone polish remover that my wife has to met this plastic? If not what brand or acetone is required
Well, if you liquefy the plastic bumper to repair your broken bumper, that's still fine. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Have a nice weekend!
A great idea for plastics that can dissolve in acetone, but YIKES! I have a very nice scar on the knuckle of my left index finger where the blade went down to the bone from doing what you are doing at 6:09.
Been there, same finger. Nearly cut it off, never the same! Always cut away from the fingers.
Facts: actually with practice it's an acquired skill, better blade control to cut towards you. i read this how they prove it to be true years ago. just be safe Bro's
I also learned the hard way, to never use the utility knife to you, I mean if it miss , straight to your finger! Always cut from you direction.
If you need absolutly to cut something, to your side direction, make sure to never hold the object like he did in the video! Hold it in a way, with keeping in mind that if it miss cut, if wont hurt your holding hand.
Dont worry, acetone can also fix that😁
Hi Gaus. ABS plastic dissolved in acetone releases styrene which is carcinogenic. I recommend using two-component epoxy resin. It reconstructs the missing parts better and has no health risks
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
I've used this technique and it works GREAT where 2 part epoxy does not work.
You are not supposed to drink it.😃
You inhale it when the mix is in liquid phase@@waihonlam7808

My current favorite plastic glue is permatex plastic weld but I'll have to give this a try. Thanks!
This works equally well with PMMA/Acrylic/Perspex as it does with PC as shown. I have been doing this to make specialty mixes of PMMA weld. Be advised that with PMMA or PC you want to make your donor chips as small as possible. With softer plastics such as PC, you can use a cheese grater or with harder plastics such as PMMA you could use a metal file. Beware that with PMMA, crazing is possible with extruded sheet. Best results are found when welding cast PMMA.
Can you specify the types of plastic in terms of the grading code (1-7) that is stamped on which work? Also what is the percentage of acetone that you need? Will regular nail polish remover work?
@@maxinvictus Well that was interesting. I never checked until now but it's surprising that PMMA is actually #7. That's a shame too because it is actually fully recyclable with multiple cheap and safe pathways. You may find PMMA sold as Plexiglass in US/Canada, Perspex in Europe, or worldwide as Acrylic (as in Acrylic paints or Acrylic resin).
As for w/w I usually just eyeball it but you can definitely be more scientific about it. Start around 1:1 and work your way up or down as needed. Dissolving takes time. Can take several days. Use a container safe for acetone such as glass or PP (#5).
Nail polish remover should be fine so long as it does not contain any oils, fragrances, dyes, or other chemicals.
it's not for all the plastic (hence you can see as he does using plastic cup for) and in case you will combine different tipe of plastic, it won't bond too much well, but for those, what can be melted by acetone or somehow reacts with (PVC, ABS, polystyren) it's nice tip, actually.
Quote: _"...what can be melted by acetone or somehow reacts with (PVC, ABS, polystyren) it's nice tip..."_
Thank you.
What would be interesting is a durability test. I once bought a two-component glue with a primer made for polyolefins, but it still didn't last very long. Reinforcing with sheet metal still works best for me.
It also works with PMMA ans SAN.
Gracias por compartir...saludos desde México...
Questions about your idea here
I like it lots why not weld it ?
Will the asitone work on all plastics?
Some plastics are meant to with stand harsh chemicals like that of asitone
And about how long will it take for the slurry project to dry or cure completely?
Love the idea 😀😀💡💡!!!!!!
Always face the cutting blade edge away from yourself
OMG....yes! I was waiting to see "in my next video we'll talk about how to bandage an amputated finger!"
Yeah agreed, the fist safety practice that I saw in this video..please cut direction away from finger 😅. ❤thanks for your video.
Opposite. It’s only possible to control blade progression when it’s closing to you. If it’s going away from you, you are weaker and have much less control on it so it’s very hazardous, and high risk of getting harm for you or others.
But it’s true his left hand is not correctly positioned, and blade movement erratic, it’s probably due to video constraint.
Yeah, cutting toward your hand with a sharp blade. That’s real smart.
Oh karen.
could you just perhaps leave people alone? - he is out there doing stuff for people. What's Your contribution to the world?
very interesting.will try it thank you
O yeah that total genius straight up awesome 👍 thanks .
Great job, bro. Well done.
Some bumpers are manufactured with Fibre Glass materials..Some bumpers use PP or other plastic materials. Take note.
To all those who are wondering why the plastic you chose isn't melting or if all plastics can be used
Acetone will dissolve PVDF, polycarbonate, Polysulfone, Acrylic, PVC, CPVC.
It will NOT dissolve FEP, PFA, ETFE, ECTFE, PCTFE, PEEK, Polypropylene
If you use plastic that can dissolve in Acetone and apply it to any other plastic that dissolves in Acetone the residual acetone in your melted mixture will help to melt the edges of the plastic you're applying to and makes it very close to original strength. For other plastics, if you have a small area you need to repair, go grab some T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant from the plumbers section of your hardware store. I know it says thread sealant but trust me, it will work for plastics fantastically. If you're trying to repair a large area, then look up how professionals repair plastic trim on vehicles and apply that technique to the large area you need to fix.
bravissimo!!🤩
Friend, aviation shears or tip snips would save you some effort and time. Keep trucking, nice video.
Thank you!
Cutting with knife with the sharp blade side into you - amazing idea!
NEVER cut TOWARD the fingers !!
👍👍👍. Thanks
Thanks for your video, it shows resourcefulness. Disposable minds people won't like it; "right to repair guys" will love it. One caveat: it only applies to *some* plastics, those which can be dissolved in acetone themselves. Clearly syringe, adhesive tape and acetone bottle (I guess polycarbonate) do not. But it applies to *many* everyday items. You should add an extra adhesive bead on the outside of that battery case. Congratulations.
I love your repair videos 👍 But I am still working with crazy glue and baking soda which I use to fix everything :-)
Yes, It's also very good!
Fenomenal, gracias ❤

Super genial
I've tried pa n pa+ n regular plastic. Having trouble melting. Any ideas? Same recipe. Does jar need air why you put paper under the top? Thanks

very informative. thank you. i will try this on cracked fairings of my scooter
perfect! you will save so much money
Yes Bro! I'm verry happy when read your comments! I have use a fan and a mask! My workplace is very well ventilated! Thank you so much!!!
Genial gracias 😮😮😮
Your Welcome! Have a nice day
Can you use plastic bottles too? I do mold making & I bet too this would also work too instead of resin.
The plastic used in the video is ABS plastic, which breaks down when you add Acetone to it, resulting in the plastic sludge. Plastic bottles are likely made of Polyethylene and Google says Acetone can break down Polyethylene, but I'm unsure if it will turn it into a useful sludge like in the video.
How strong are the resulting patch ups?
Very good
Thanks
That's some damn good raccoon engineering. Brother, we have some of the same things wrong with us.
Mate tnx for the video. The syringe is how many ml? 50ml?
W O W !!! its really??? Nice!!! thanks mate!! :)
Glad you like it! ❤️❤️❤️
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀
Ok Friend!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I have to wonder why the acetone didn't affect the plastic water bottle he had it in or the plastic jar he dissolved his mixture in?
They were probably polypropylene or polyethylene acetone has no effect on those plastics
There's MANY kinds of plastics.
Nice ❤❤
Many many thanks
Acetone melts the car plastic but not the plastic container...????
Thank you for sharing. I'm very happywwhen read your comments!! 😊😊
👍👍👍👍👍
You are using a plastic container and a plastic syringe as well. Aren't they affected by the dissolving properties of the Acetone?
Se puede lijar?
Only works with ABS. Instead if Acetone you might as well use MEK (methyl ethyl keton)
We got the point after the first four cuts.
Do you mean super glue (cyanoacrylate)? It's about $1 in my currency, while acetone is $5. But for those price, you get 25 ml of super glue, and 1 liter of acetone.
which is better acetone or thiner PU .. ??
I don't have the experience to compare it
Why didn't the plastic bottle you used to mix the plastic with acetone melt? After all, it's also made of plastic, right?
Terimakasih
The video I'm watching he is not using a knife to cut toward himself like some are saying on here, he is using side cutters. But great video!
Finally, my goth daughter can finally make some fake fingernails.
Is there anything else I can use besides Acetone to liquify the plastic?? Like maybe paint thinner?
You might try MEK. Methyl Ethel Ketone. It may be hard to find nowadays if I remember correctly it will melt plexiglass. Sometimes it's necessary to cut towards yourself, just don't slip. And if you do get out the super glue
@@sojogunn6249 Super hazardous stuff. MEK is extremely volatile and carcinogenic.
Always cut away from yourself...

Plastic welding doesn't weaken the plastic like this does.
I tried this to repair the front windscreen under the bumper on my truck and a couple other things around the garage and it seems that everything plastic I need to repair does not dissolve in acetone so this is useless to me and I used the old faithful JB Weld plastic bonder.
You must clearly understand which plastics dissolve in acetone 😓😓 Thank You!!!!
welldone, please guide silicon tubes will dissolve in action
Thanks!!!
Chemicals are always dangerous. At least useful as one of the efforts to reduce plastic waste. And care is required for any handwork
good idea. I used to use epoxy resin. But one cannot thermal melt resin with plastic.

Hi Bro! Nice to meet you!
Nice idea, something to keep around for quick repairs when epoxy or plastic welding isnt available. And for all those remarks about hiw you were cutting towards yourself...us paramedics dont mind... Just kidding. I try to cut away but I have learned a lesson or two in my life cutting the wrong way and will probably have to learn it again before I die. I dint think anyone can say they have never dine it.
I'm don't know about it before reading your comment, andI had to watch video again. Thank you!
Can you do that to rubber. To repair boots heels
Excellent video. Ruined for me by the high-pitched, loud DING at the end. Tinnitus.
Well done. Looks interesting but howcome acetone does not harm the plastic jar and the plastic syringe?
because it is a type of plastic that does not dissolve in acetone, acetone only mixes plastics containing Polyester
If it works for you great. But I’ve been repairing different plastics for years and I don’t see how your seems aren’t brittle and will fail under a load. But if they work for you, good on you. But be careful with that straight edge pal,cut away from yourself and body parts and don’t make a habit of breathing that mixture
Can PVC be used?
How do I repair a car cabin radiator nozzle?
The material is fibre-filled PP and it has to withstand a temperature of over 100 degrees...
If that's impossible, you'll have to dismantle the whole dashboard to change those bloody plastic nozzles...
Oh maaan ... when I see someone using a blade against his fingers I know he is a joke ... kids, never do this!!!
Evert Profesional in a trade that uses knives consistently will cut in both directions. Glaciers, contrustcion, mechanical, auto body etc. There are plenty of safe ways to cut in both directions. Cutting away from u is what you teach your children. In the real world u don't always have an option if u want a quality result. If u watch his video u can see when he cuts towards himself he stops at a point and flips it around. He knows when he gets to the end there will be built up energy and that's when ppl get cut he avoids this by stopping mid cut and changing direction to finish the cut now using the initial cut as a relief.
@@anthonysheldone5023 hahah - what he is doing is just stupid - you do not need to explain.

Plastics dissolve in acetone: Polystyrene, abs and acryllic
What specific plastic type to fix hole (fill low spot) on car plastic bumper?
I saw other guy using plastic filler.. You know bodyfiller for metal used by panelbeaters right... There is one made for plastics.. Nt sure wher to get it
Thanks, will find one
Isn’t it cheaper/easier just buying some JB weld or similar than that acetone?
