    Your instructions worked out terrific! The birds started feeding within a day, and the squirrels are still trying to figure out how to get to the feeder. A few mods to make it even better:
    1. use a coat hanger to attach the feeder to a branch. This will further discourage the squirrels.
    2. lower the bird perch by another 1/2 inch. I attached a colorful drinking straw to the bottom of the feeder using elastic bands. The birds are finding it much easier to grab onto the straw pipe.
    Good luck and thank you!

      I was just perusing the comments when I read yours and I just wanted to say that I think using colorful straws is a great option. Different colors may even attract more birds. 👍

    Very ingenious. Great idea to use the twist ties. Strong enough for the small birds but not the bigger ones to sit on. I have been using wire a lot this year to foil the squirrels. They do chew off the rope ties that they hang on so I have had to resort to using wire for that now. Also wrapping around some of our feeders so the bigger birds cannot perch so easy. Your design is very good. You better patent it.

    In remote and rural Nebraska we had huge flocks of all kinds of birds visit our feeders. We went through 100 pounds of various seed EVERY MONTH during summer. To keep up, I made two PVC feeders like this one, each large enough to dispense 10 pounds of seed. One dispensed safflower for house finches and doves -- and some song sparrows -- and one with cheapo seed mix from Wallmart for everybody else. (Also spread sunflower, crack and whole corn, etc., on the ground the juncos and big birds.)
    Nearest tree was about 500 feet away, so squirrels did not dare come out in the open to visit feeders: kestrels nailed foolhardy squirrels by day, owls got them by night. Lessons learned: white feeders do not work because the birds are too visible to raptors when they feed. ABS feeders did not work because they absorbed tremendous heat. PVC feeders sprayed with splotches of matte green, matte gray, and matte brown camo paints worked best. Goldfinches hate PVC feeders, so it took me a couple of years to come up with a PVC feeder design they would sort of tolerate -- but never really liked.

    I see a lot of comments about deterring squirrels. Here's what I did: I added cayenne pepper to the bird seed. It gives the squirrels heartburn & doesn't bother the birds. After 3 days or so the squjirrels stopped eating out of the feeder. They pick up the seeds that get thrown on the ground and don't bother trying to get to the feeder.

    Ingenious! I would not use the rope because I live in a wet part of the world. I would drill two holes near the top at opposite sides and use wire or similar to hang it up. One screw in each hole to attach the wire.

    • @DiyRick66
      @DiyRick66  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      tarjei99 You could do that if the rope is wicking water down into the seed. You could bend a old hanger ;-)

  • @TheWindoc42
    @TheWindoc42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The design is great with one very important item. You can only fill with enough seed to come up to the bottom of the feeder holes and the birds can only eat what they can reach. Filling past this point will result in seed running out. This will make for constant refilling, with my birds it means daily!!!

    4:40 Use a heat gun, or a high-heat, blow-dryer to help squeeze the little pieces. This technique can be also used on long, thinner lengths to make adapter-wands for your regular/shop vacuums. You can shape the end of the wand for getting to unique spaces.

    Thanks for posting. Good, heavy duty design. I've learned to add some type of tray or platform below the feeder to catch the seeds that some birds seem to enjoy scooping out of the holes and letting them drop on the ground. Some of the ones that fall on the ground are eaten, but most do not get eaten. I prefer making a square plywood platform with strips of wood glued and screwed or stapled to the edges of the plywood. Let the strip overhang about 1/2" to 3/4" above the top of the plywood to catch and hold the seeds. You'll be surprised how much seed ends up in the tray instead of on the ground.

    This project did need a fix though, once finished cut the base off a 2Liter plastic bottle and slide the bottle inside with the neck going down right in the middle of the 4 pvc inner pieces. The neck will be the seeds' only way of egress and will also act like a stopper so seed will only fall when the birds eat.
    Without the bottle you would not be able to fill the tube all the way to the top with seed, because it will start falling out. Idk about you but I don't want to untie and open that feeder every three days just to refill it. Especially for areas with many birds.

    Schedule 40 is overkill and costly. Use the thinner "drain line" version. Much easier to work with. Lowes carries it, about $10 for 10 feet. The caps are very inexpensive also. Instead of rope/cord, use cable, preferably the vinyl-coated version. Let it hang down far enough to discourage the squirrels from trying to climb down it. A little hot glue sealing over the hole covers will help keep rain out of the feed.

    This is a clever design for deterring bigger birds and nice looking too, but I fear will not keep away squirrels - They will chew off the zip ties in a few seconds and chew away at the feeder until they get into the feed - They will eat wood, plastic and they try to chew metal - But, great feeder

    • @carolalter6697
      @carolalter6697 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry -This would keep away squirrels if it was hung by airplane wire which is strong but to fine for the squirrels to grip and hung from a high branch and squirrels were not able to jump onto the feeder - Even squirrels can only jump so far so if it is suspended far enough away from any branch, house, porch and the ground it should be okay - You could also put a steep hood over it so if the little buggers do get down the wire they will slide off - Of course you would need a series of pullies, eyelets etc. to be able to raise and lower the feeder - Squirrels are very persistent

      skydaver2 Build one yourself there cheap enough & let us know. I don't have any around my feeder right now just small birds. So it has worked for me.

      If cap ever becomes loose, just drill a couples small holes through the side of the cap and housing body and insert a small nail to lock the cap in place. Remove the two nails and lift off cap when you need to refill.

    To deter or eliminate squirrels without harming them all you need to do is get some human hair ( next haircut just ask for your own ) just blotch it around the area you don’t want any squirrels, won’t bother birds.

    I built one of your designs and two weeks later the squirrels have chewed a hole big enough to crawl right in and help themselves. Big waste of my time and money

    • @DiyRick66
      @DiyRick66  ปีที่แล้ว

      Was the squirrel hanging off your pole to chew it? I have to yet had an issue with them being able to hand on the feeder itself without sliding off. Not saying it can't happen because these little devils have a lot of time figure things out.
