@@Katehowe3010 unfortunately my house was robbed & I lost a lot of my albums. I worked for a record store in Miami & had so many limited editions, etc. I love Talk Talk. Always will be in my top 20 bands.

This is why we old folk in our mid-60's will ALWAYS love the synth-pop music of the middle-1980's. "It's My Life" is very special to me--almost 40 years later--because it helped me through a four-year battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma (which I obviously won because "it's my life" then, and it's still my life today.) The POWER of this song lies in its deeply felt BEAUTY and those aspects are inseparable. Sometimes I feel as if this miraculous recording does, in fact, tap into the human collective unconsciousness through the voice of Marc Hollis. One cannot deny its appeal across time and distance. It leaves its mark on us all. In the harmonies of Talk-Talk's "Its My Life" people find a harmony within themselves as truth and beauty mesh. A joyous and inspiring song from a man who was known specifically for his "gentle beauty."
The first time I heard this back in the 80s, I had the weirdest fascination. I found it deeper than I expected. I won't go into interpretations but it remains one of my favorites out of the 80s. RIP, Mark!
Interesting that you thought the bass-line was similar to Bryan Ferry's song. I've always thought Mark Hollis' voice was very similar to Bryan Ferry's. Great reaction.
One of my all-time favorite songs! For what it’s worth, this song was released before Bryan Ferry’s Don’t Stop the Dance, so perhaps Bryan borrowed a bit from Mark Hollis and Talk Talk. We may never know. Thanks for the reaction Harri! And thanks for the music, Mark Hollis. Rest in peace.
It sounds incredibly similar to a song The Walker Brothers released in 1978 called Nite Flights. On the last album they did for Phillips. Later David Bowie would cover Nite Flights.
yes, the bryan ferry song is "don't stop the dance". i remember when i first heard "it's my life" way back when. it's lush, sonic atmosphere and wonderful melody took me aback, the same way that bryan's band roxy music wowed me with their final LP AVALON. both of these releases are brilliant.
And yet I prefer the synth pop of "The Party's Over". It wasn't the first album I heard of them, and discovered it only after digging a little deeper when they were 'hit material', but there's not a weak song on there, and the lament in Mark's voice is on occasion almost palpable.
Great reaction! This song was a HUGE alternative club hit. Talk Talk was one of my favorite new wave bands. I have lots of their 12" dance remixes, they are all exceptional. Saw them at the No 6 Festival in Wales in 2018. They were fantastic. And Mark Hollis looked the picture of health. But a year later he was dead. I still haven’t got my head around that one yet 🤔
This is Talk Talk at the backend of their synth pop period. Although the album of the same name is a step up from their debut, it was 'The Colour Of Spring' release two years later, where it all starts to become more organic and acoustic based. After that, in '88, they did the most incredible thing by inventing a genre known as Post Rock on the remarkable 'Spirit Of Eden' album. Selling next to nothing, and resulting in a court battle that they won, it was essentially a two finger salute to EMI, who got rid of the band! Signing to the jazz label Verve, they released one more album called 'Laughing Stock', which was even more experimental and improvisatory than the last, and yet filled with ambience, jazz and chamber music, which five years earlier could never have been imagined! Lead man and writer, Mark Hollis retired from the music industry, before returning in 91, with a self titled album that was as minimal and in thrall to silence as was possible. Sadly, Mark Hollis died in 2019, at the age of 64, but as the years pass, his legacy grows, and more people are finding the magic of that remarkable five year period, where Hollis and Talk Talk changed the musical climate for later fellow adventurers to take the baton and run with it!

The No Doubt version was a sad disapointment for me.That cover is just about HUMANS. The whole idea of the song was, that us humans are not alone on this planet. We DO have company. And we are not the owners. We are the visitors. And one day, we will be gone and life goes on. Business as usual, as us humans would say. And the rest of the world would add: The show must go on...OR: Time is not money. Time is ONLY what we have left..
I love the song, but I have to say I like No Doubt's version more with Gwen Stefani out front. I just feel she put more passion/emotion behind the vocal. But such a good song, either version is fine for me.
@@Katehowe3010 Mark did put his heart and soul into it. But as Harri described, his vocal style made him sound somewhat reluctant, like he was holding back. Whereas Gwen laid it all out there, with a vocal performance that comes across as far more passionate. I love both versions, but No Doubt's cover is better. And their music video is brilliant.
@@Cosmo-Kramer Reluctancy is a part of Mark's singing style, and in no way relates to a lack of anything! Gwen stefani covered it in 2003. Not as climactic as the original but definitely more dramatic.
And yet, every time I hear their version, I think "Why are they not playing the original?"
And I mean EVERY time. Still.
Watch them live at Montreux and include the song such a shame.
this was covered by No Doubt some years later, you may have heard there version
Half of the comments refer to that dreadful cover version! It's a lot wiser to live in the present.
Such a shame is another good song by talk talk
MARK HOLLIS A GENIUS ... such a shame, tomorrow started and more. Its my life covered by gwen stefani. SACRILEGE!!!!!!
I don't think covering great songs is sacrilege. It's a homage. Audible proof of appreciation for the song's quality. I DO agree though that No Doubt's version would not have been missed had they never covered it. A feeble attempt at easy money
"don't stop" by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel ? the song you're comparing
Kinda missin Gwen's shrill vocals on this one
Like a sore tooth.
Love that you loved it but its not like Dont stop the dance. Listen to the meaning. You missed the whole point of the song!
He was referring to the bass line, not the lyrics. You missed the whole point of the comparison!
Gwen stefani did a great cover of this
I love the song, but I have to say I like No Doubt's version more with Gwen Stefani out front. I just feel she put more passion/emotion behind the vocal. But such a good song, either version is fine for me.
Mark put his heart and soul into everything he sang. The suggestion that there is a lack of that in the original is preposterous!
There's more longing in his frailty than Gwen Stefani could ever dream of, so forgive me for not validating your opinion in any way. I may be wrong, but you have the sentiments of a millennial about you, and i'm allergic to their ramblings! Finally, if you want to hear Hollis in pure soul mode, bereft of the 80s synths, and in a pure acoustic setting, listen to something from their last two albums. Chances are that the Talk Talk you experience there will either change your life, or sail over your head. I have a pretty good idea that something like 'New Grass' or 'Inheritance' will leave you somewhat baffled! Thanks and goodnight.
It looks like Talk Talk don't really belong to this 'pop' channel! I only asked Harri because he had never played them. Unfortunately, he went and played the most obvious song in their catalogue. No worries though, as the channels i frequent are well into their later groundbreaking material, so all is fine!
There is nothing Gwen could do to redeem herself or her band for their desecration of this musical mastery. No Doubt sucks, no doubt.
