Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Vs Classic: Is it worth my time?

- Here I'm stepping into the unknown once more and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by some of this. In other places I had my expectations met but the downsides for me were a matter of taste and not quality.

Classic actually used to look a lot better. When they released NGS it had a massive lighting overhaul that COMPLETELY changed how every. Single. Scene. Looked. It was literally night and day.
classic has a far slower start to get to the actual *meat* of the combat, with new moves for each weapon and more complex classes being unlocked as you progress. new genesis gives you what you stick with for pretty much the entire game, leading to it feeling very stale later. in my opinion, classic ends up offering more overall in terms of fun-factor and variety in its gameplay because new genesis doesn't have enough meaningful class progression that would make me excited to get stronger.
NGS could go a long way towards remedying this problem with implementation of more PAs, which we've wanted for over two years. Otherwise, aside from the gacha, the only issue I've had with this game as a Classic Global day 1 player is the lack of RP elements. We need random events and raids. The rng should be shifted to raid and event spawns. Its competitive edge is the cosmetics, but without any RP to sink our teeth into outside of lobby grinds, all these cosmetics go to waste as our story is basically confined to headcanon. IMO after RP buffs, comprehensive skill and PA additions, could put this game right where we need it to be... Well and of course, a space city!
I just got into this game last month with some friends and we have been having a blast, never played base except for once when global first released. I highly recommend giving it a fair shot. I think most people will be pleasantly surprised.

LOVE the intro LOL, dont want to be a hater and all, but this is so true, mmos were fun when we were kids that had all the time in the world, as you grow older, you realize how much they don't respect your time. The grind, the rngs, were all designed so you keep playing unhealthily (not to mention the p2w). This game design is outdated and has aged poorly, there's still a market and space for them but they will never get the mainstream they used to have before. Other genres have took their spot, mostly the mobile market, and other liveservice games that are funnily enough more Massively multiplayer than MMOs. There are exceptions to the trends of mmo like ff14 which has all what people know of mmos but respects your time. It shows that the genre can adapt, but it's definitely not without risks to do so, in which is probably the driving force of why we haven't seen a lot try. It's expensive to try making it big on the mmo scene (which isn't that big anymore) and also a huge risk, so not surprised why the top mmos are still the mmos recommended since a decade ago. It's a stagnant genre, with jaded niche playerbase. Also f2ps are not actually cheap, they're made to make money, and while yes you can control your fomo for it, game features WILL be designed around it and will frustrate you, they will make it grindier, more rng, create problems and sell the solution. Player market will be a whales game and you will always be 2nd class citizen on it. Bots will ruin the economy and immersion. I much prefer the sub based one if i can avoid all of those, even if i much prefer the f2p model myself.

Honestly both are still really fun to me, currently just leveling classes in pso2 and farming the heck out of aegis and Solus in ngs.
If everything in the game consistently breaks except for the cash shop, then you know the studio's intentions. Also, they shut down the official forums because too many people had FFXIV avatars and the domain kept running FFXIV ads

Id love you to try a Tales Runner Private Server. It will change what a MMO can be to you.
I would love a remake of phantasy star portable 2 and dlc. The pacing of story and gameplay was balanced, i wish that was around.

Is there better combat in any other mmo? As of may 2024 the game still lacks meaningful content..the chapter 5 story has evolved into something good good and is showing promise..but it's the gliding and combat system that have me hooked..so fast and over the top..i recently installed jedi survivor..and tried to fight with my pso ngs mentality..I failed.pso is go go go counter go go go counter..a jedi must have patience and not be the aggressor
if you're looking for content and good combat, imo classic pso2 has more satisfying combat and class progression even though it's a slow start. i'd recommend bouncer if you're looking for a class that feels similar to its ngs counterpart, plus there are unlockable photon arts that aren't available in the new game. and the unlockable classes are even _more_ over the top.

Also yes, there is better combat. BDO combat is incredibly good and has so much variety. Rest of the game is up for debate, but the combat is top tier.

@@DiscountYT I mean yeah valid, some of it is great and some of it isn't. Still stands though, the combat is fantastic.
It is not worth of the time, good one if you play occasionally. People always say contentless but it got content alright (trainia, ordinal, race) it just rewardless to do. But at least the creative space can keep you busy.

As someone who started playing NGS around the time when it came out and got back after the third expansion hit, I can say with confidence, NGS sucks and the base PSO2 is the better experience!
It's not the question of 'Is it worth your time?', you played it at the wrong time.
Plus the "Classic" PSO2 is based on the Original Classic PSO which is how it supposed to play but more upgraded.
NGS is made for mainstream and the lazy.
i dont feel the magic mmorpg's once had. I feel like it is because of the monetization, microtransactions, and daily activities that ruin it for me. I wish we could just go back to only subscription based mmorpgs.
Some games would be better off this way, with a free trial. Final Fantasy 14 does so well because they do it right. This of course can be debated, but I think what it offers is worth the exansion and subscription prices. If you want anything from the shop, it's cosmetics, pets, and mounts. You get what you pay for. No bull shit (maybe waiting the 1hour or more to get your stuff delivered is lol).

Kanchan impact is a co-op bring it to screwy co-op and that this game too but I don’t see how this is an MMO I don’t think that you see other players unless they’re on your team I think I wanna play that but I’m pretty sure sister up to 32 player co-op don’t you have to join someone’s team to be in the same world with them except in the arm hog Siri I don’t know I got it down loading right now I’m gonna have a work but I really do not think this is a Merrilrel Hwy RPGing and I’m pretty certain that the classic was not an MMORPG and I guarantee their Genesis army now Kenshin impact is not an MMORPG I just referred to the well of time, but it is a standard co-op for player co-op With the RV. Their age player should be using a different class. I have different elemental for their class but I I also think you can switch on the fly, which is one of the reasons why I guess I should do. I remove people can’t actually commit to a class or play style before leaving their house city play they should play Final Fantasy or one of the games that let you have every job or every class on one character like your Genesis like that can do that too directions somebody correct or wrong but you will match the other players old on your mission in the world who lost their join your team right now MMORPG is a co-op

No only James are down there monetization like that our TruthSocial group zoom games everything else has that monetization that marketing ploy, every single one any do you have a service which has any game anybody playing uses those marketing tools?
