@@schlomoshekelstein908 For large motors like this, we (in the United States) absolutely do rewind these. Loads of companies exist to do just that. Our own military, also, often rewinds its own motors. Onboard all US Navy carriers is a motor rewind shop that stays quite busy rewinding motors both large and small.
Planned obsolescence is the problems, many industries are only required to produce parts for a few years after end of production, they deliberately change new models to force you to buy new if your old one breaks. Often the information for repair is not made available and parts are only released to manufacturer approved techs.
Just like I learned it 30 years ago in Germany and did it myself. The differences between how it is seen here and how we did it in Germany were marginal. We had a heated workshop, a winding machine for a little help with coil making and the varnish was not applied, but the entire engine was hung in a dipping basin, afterwards it came into a large electric oven. Otherwise it was the same kind of manual work and with large engines also with us outside one worked because we had inside no strong enough loadable crane. Even the bearing seats we made fit again in the same way by grains. It is always nice to see that the craftsmanship is basically the same everywhere :-)

not really because thats how they all built at this scale... smh btw they totally will have a fail on that motor not too long in the future... varnish process is done under vacuum to remove all the air from the inside between the gaps in the wires just pouring the shit over it isnt gonna cut it...

I'm maintenance manager, I used to send my electric motors to a work shop here in North Italy... They are still working in this way... Though they wear shoes and don't have a bamboo trellis to lift the motor... The grandfather is awesome, I'd like to watch him working for days.
They cut that part out because when they started up the electric engine, it exploded, set fire to all the surrounding building's killing 28 people and then, they all gathered together to figure out the difference between an electric motor and gasoline engine... Poof problem solved.

WOW. Just wow...... That is simply amazing what you do with such limited resources. I used to work for a company that used almost exclusively rewind motors and your work would be on par with theirs. Thing is, they had so many more machines and tools to do the same job so I have nothing but respect for what you do in your little workshop. Seriously impressed.......

These guys are all awesome at what they do and clearly have a lot of experience. They seem to operate as a unit, and it reminds me of my three cats catching a rabbit; they all play a certain specialized role and do it well, while the very large and strong but SLOW orange tabby comes in and does the actual killing before they share equally in the spoils of the hunt. Teamwork! Poor rabbits! And as the capitalist behind the operation, they bring me half of the kill just for being me - I'm the proverbial fat cat! Meow!

At a time when automated systems can be disabled at the drop of an EMP device, it is nice to know that tradesmen exist who can rebuild without electronic systems. True craftsmanship even in a primitive shop can produce massive results. Kudos.

Завод делает по ГОСТ-ам и с применением механизации/автоматизации. И то 10%-15% выходят с повышенными токами холостого хода, что недопустимо. Уважать этот шараж мантаж? за что? Такие чудо ремонтники во-первых передохнут от несоблюдения ТБ, во-вторых я смотрю их материалы и ору с краски из баллончиков, она должна быть электроизоляционной, токарников нету, коллекторные моторы чинят болгаркой, хотя там допуски по биениям аэрокосмические. Подозреваю, что их моторы в 99% случаях бракованные.
@@МустафинПавел пропитка обмоток из бутылки кокаколы с дыркой в крышке - давно так не ржал. Интересно, насколько быстро его опять придется перематывать... Без вакуумной пропитки как показывает практика моторы долго не живут.

Greetings from Germany. Nicely done. There used to be more re-winding companies in Germany too, but they seem to be getting less. People just seem to be considering less having a motor rewound.
EN: even in these days there is not much option for "high tech" anyways for such type of winding. the human skills are still the main option if you want the job to succeed. DE: Selbst in heutiger Zeit gibt es keine wirklichen "high tech" Alternativen for solche Wicklungstypen. Die menschlichen Fähigkeiten sind die zentrale Option damit die Arbeit erfolgreich umgesetzt wird.
I did this for over 22 years. 1/4hp up to 500hp A/C and up to 175hp D/C. These guys deserve a lot of credit. It isn't easy to do. It's hard on the joints in the hand and back. If I hadn't got hurt, I would still be doing this.
It looks very labor intensive! Obviously these motors aren't cheap, even if they're rebuilt/refurbished, but the wages paid surely must be very low to make this economically viable? That's too bad, given the difficulty, risk of injury and of course the tedious nature of the work. But I suppose it wouldn't be worth it at all to rebuild them if the workers were paid what the labor is truly worth. I'm not even sure if this type of work is even done in the United States anymore; basic economic realities have caused our traditional industrial base to migrate overseas, and that is just the way it is! We are no longer the world's "one stop shop" for every little thing the way we were for the 20 years or so after World War II. That was just a fortunate (for us) side effect of all of the world's factories being leveled by aerial bombardment - but once they all rebuilt, they sure did snag themselves some market share! Japan and (West) Germany became imdustrial monsters! Japan's exports were so good and cheap that we passed all sorts of laws and tariffs on them to impede them so as to save our own antiquated industrial base. Really very unfair.

Congratulations on your work, friend! Just a tip, when welding the motor output cables, place a little damp cotton near the ends of the cable. Thus the cable insulation and even the copper wires are not damaged as much. Success my friend!
I was doing this 40 years ago))but to do connections we were using small transformer for welding and graphite on one side,to weld those connections,it was much quicker and easier than you guys did in video.

Wanting to suggest unfaithful work in a well-tuned video focused on engine maintenance, only one person with too much free time "Unemployed" to have so much imagination, he was polite and you inconvenient.
Thank you for sharing this to the world in its raw form. You definitely need a vacuum system to hermitically seal the windings with varnish. This alone will add life to the motor and repeat customers for you.
@@majedaelectricworkshop We would first heat up the winding /stator in the bake oven, then carefully dip it in a varnish tank...we would wait for the air bubbles to stop...normally 1/2 hour or more....then let the varnish drip back into the varnish tank...then bake it in an oven for hours.
Agree with you on the brain and hands comments but I am reasonably sure your choice of music may not be Md Mohin's choice either. We could be a bit more understanding of other cultures and simply use your knob (volume knob) (no negative reference to your alias or name Joe), to eliminate the sound to the video and just appreciate the workmanship without the critical comment. I also didn't "appreciate" the background music they took the time to upload with the video but it didn't detract from my experience of these young peoples skills as I had the choice, just like you did, to turn the sound down. The electric motor is a design classic. Most are still pretty much the same as they have been for decades and it is great that they can be refurbished like this. I know that more modern ones have all sorts of frequency control now to deliver massive torque at low revs that can eliminate the need for reduction gearboxes in some cases.
Yeah traditionally that relatively low starting torque has been the downside of AC induction motors, but I think modern computer controls have fixed a lot of this. Traditional DC traction motors are still king when it comes to huge starting torque right out of the gate, but their expense and mechanical complication are surely going to make them obsolete for big industrial applications at some point. I still don't fully understand how AC induction motors work because I am very stupid and slow-witted; I am a big dummy.
This motor is so big that probably does not have the amperage capacity to test it in house. He can only test as a closed circuit by using an Ohm meter.
Nice Job! Realy beautyful work. Here is a HINT for you: In our workshop we used to have little longer slot insulation between two coils in one slot (aprox. 30 to 40 mm per side). It is a better protection against short circuit between T1 and T2. If you look very detailed in your video the insulation between two Terminals is not 100% to the ground where the slot insulation beginns. In worst case this could damage the motor.
Did you repaint the motor? It doesnt cost much to repaint and to the customers will like the job much more, If they walk by the will always look at the motor and say waw, look at that nice motor. Small things count :)
i am amazed how professionally and precisely you done this job!! you used absolutely no factory machines, just human hands and simple tools .. and it looks absolutely professional. thumbs up!
Put that coil pack in a large stiff wall container and set a vacuum to it this will prevent rattling and makes your coils a lot quieter be sure and use the expensive fiberglass tape and then re vacuum and heat vacuum oven would be the best finish for a nice quiet coil packs wrap tightly on your copper but don't worry about it too much the vacuum process and the varnish will take up all the gaps get out there and get started tonight.
Such incredible workmanship and talent in such a primitive environment! I used to do this kind of work about 40 years ago and even back then our shop was more automated than this. This is hard work and even with the limited machinery you make it look easy. Keep up the good work.

It's a very necessary process to ensure that the motor doesn't malfunction during its operation. It's a very large motor, so varnish process is also elaborate. It prolongs the life of the windings, protects it from moisture and holds all the wire firmly so that vibration due to power supply becomes minimum.

@@brgmnn you don't have to become a mechanic to have knowledge about how stuff works. I'm an electronics engineer working with the govt. Many mechanics of various trades come to my office and I'm pleased to learn the practical things from them. It took me a month or two to become expert in motor designing. It's all about your interest. I don't think I would be winding motor for my livlyhood. 😀

I agree. I prefer videos where the people are explaining what they're doing. The music wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so loud. I turned the volume slider down to 1/4. Most other channels you have to have the volume Up to hear what the people are saying. Problem with that is they often make their intro music way to loud.
I have my own music so generally watch these on mute. Good job, like a bought one. I haven't the patience so would have attempted to launch it into outer space at some point.

Watched the entire thing with the anticipation of watching it run and it didn’t show the motor operating after rebuild. Disappointing but it’s great they’re still performing an old craft and rebuilding instead of replacing it.
Same here but my Dad's in the 60's. Only change seen is the wood was swapped for the fiberglass. It used to be wood in the slots. The use of hard brazing solder was not used on smaller motors. That is also new to me. Makes sense as it would not cold flow and fail. Only hard silver brazing I do is in refrigeration work.
This is a huge motor rewinding, I learn how to do them in high school but in a lot smaller scale, it takes a lot of time, skills and hard work to rewind a motor I wish that they have to test it before delivery, just to think about a short circuit or any mistake in the process give me the chills, that is a lot of man-hours just to discover you had a short in one of the coils. great job guys

Завод делает по ГОСТ-ам и с применением механизации/автоматизации. И то 10%-15% выходят с повышенными токами холостого хода, что недопустимо. Уважать этот шараж мантаж? за что? Такие чудо ремонтники во-первых передохнут от несоблюдения ТБ, во-вторых я смотрю их материалы и ору с краски из баллончиков, она должна быть электроизоляционной, токарников нету, коллекторные моторы чинят болгаркой, хотя там допуски по биениям аэрокосмические. Подозреваю, что их моторы в 99% случаях бракованные.
Павел ты прав. Смотрю на них и сомневаюсь в качестве такой работы. Я 20 лет этим занимался и по моей вине ни один двиг не сгорел.

I did this for over 22 years. 1/4hp up to 500hp A/C and up to 175hp D/C. These guys deserve a lot of credit. It isn't easy to do. It's hard on the joints in the hand and back. If I hadn't got hurt, I would still be doing this.
It looks very labor intensive! Obviously these motors aren't cheap, even if they're rebuilt/refurbished, but the wages paid surely must be very low to make this economically viable? That's too bad, given the difficulty, risk of injury and of course the tedious nature of the work. But I suppose it wouldn't be worth it at all to rebuild them if the workers were paid what the labor is truly worth. I'm not even sure if this type of work is even done in the United States anymore; basic economic realities have caused our traditional industrial base to migrate overseas, and that is just the way it is! We are no longer the world's "one stop shop" for every little thing the way we were for the 20 years or so after World War II. That was just a fortunate (for us) side effect of all of the world's factories being leveled by aerial bombardment - but once they all rebuilt, they sure did snag themselves some market share! Japan and (West) Germany became imdustrial monsters! Japan's exports were so good and cheap that we passed all sorts of laws and tariffs on them to impede them so as to save our own antiquated industrial base. Really very unfair.

Just a tip, when welding the motor output cables, place a little damp cotton near the ends of the cable. Thus the cable insulation and even the copper wires are not damaged as much.

I was doing this 40 years ago))but to do connections we were using small transformer for welding and graphite on one side,to weld those connections,it was much quicker and easier than you guys did in video.

Thank you for sharing this to the world in its raw form. You definitely need a vacuum system to hermitically seal the windings with varnish. This alone will add life to the motor and repeat customers for you.

@@majedaelectricworkshop We would first heat up the winding /stator in the bake oven, then carefully dip it in a varnish tank...we would wait for the air bubbles to stop...normally 1/2 hour or more....then let the varnish drip back into the varnish tank...then bake it in an oven for hours.
and to strip the wires we would just take the torch and heat up the ends of the wires to burn off the coating...much quicker.

Agree with you on the brain and hands comments but I am reasonably sure your choice of music may not be Md Mohin's choice either. We could be a bit more understanding of other cultures and simply use your knob (volume knob) (no negative reference to your alias or name Joe), to eliminate the sound to the video and just appreciate the workmanship without the critical comment. I also didn't "appreciate" the background music they took the time to upload with the video but it didn't detract from my experience of these young peoples skills as I had the choice, just like you did, to turn the sound down. The electric motor is a design classic. Most are still pretty much the same as they have been for decades and it is great that they can be refurbished like this. I know that more modern ones have all sorts of frequency control now to deliver massive torque at low revs that can eliminate the need for reduction gearboxes in some cases.
Yeah traditionally that relatively low starting torque has been the downside of AC induction motors, but I think modern computer controls have fixed a lot of this. Traditional DC traction motors are still king when it comes to huge starting torque right out of the gate, but their expense and mechanical complication are surely going to make them obsolete for big industrial applications at some point. I still don't fully understand how AC induction motors work because I am very stupid and slow-witted; I am a big dummy.

This motor is so big that probably does not have the amperage capacity to test it in house. He can only test as a closed circuit by using an Ohm meter.

Here is a HINT for you:
In our workshop we used to have little longer slot insulation between two coils in one slot (aprox. 30 to 40 mm per side). It is a better protection against short circuit between T1 and T2.
If you look very detailed in your video the insulation between two Terminals is not 100% to the ground where the slot insulation beginns. In worst case this could damage the motor.

Did you repaint the motor? It doesnt cost much to repaint and to the customers will like the job much more, If they walk by the will always look at the motor and say waw, look at that nice motor. Small things count :)

Awesome work thank you for sharing, I was hesitant about building my own large electromagnet, but not any longer :)
Put that coil pack in a large stiff wall container and set a vacuum to it this will prevent rattling and makes your coils a lot quieter be sure and use the expensive fiberglass tape and then re vacuum and heat vacuum oven would be the best finish for a nice quiet coil packs wrap tightly on your copper but don't worry about it too much the vacuum process and the varnish will take up all the gaps get out there and get started tonight.
Such incredible workmanship and talent in such a primitive environment! I used to do this kind of work about 40 years ago and even back then our shop was more automated than this. This is hard work and even with the limited machinery you make it look easy. Keep up the good work.

It's a very necessary process to ensure that the motor doesn't malfunction during its operation. It's a very large motor, so varnish process is also elaborate. It prolongs the life of the windings, protects it from moisture and holds all the wire firmly so that vibration due to power supply becomes minimum.

I'm an electronics engineer working with the govt. Many mechanics of various trades come to my office and I'm pleased to learn the practical things from them.
It took me a month or two to become expert in motor designing. It's all about your interest. I don't think I would be winding motor for my livlyhood. 😀

I agree. I prefer videos where the people are explaining what they're doing. The music wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so loud. I turned the volume slider down to 1/4. Most other channels you have to have the volume Up to hear what the people are saying. Problem with that is they often make their intro music way to loud.

Watched the entire thing with the anticipation of watching it run and it didn’t show the motor operating after rebuild. Disappointing but it’s great they’re still performing an old craft and rebuilding instead of replacing it.

Same here but my Dad's in the 60's. Only change seen is the wood was swapped for the fiberglass. It used to be wood in the slots. The use of hard brazing solder was not used on smaller motors. That is also new to me. Makes sense as it would not cold flow and fail. Only hard silver brazing I do is in refrigeration work.

This is a huge motor rewinding, I learn how to do them in high school but in a lot smaller scale, it takes a lot of time, skills and hard work to rewind a motor I wish that they have to test it before delivery, just to think about a short circuit or any mistake in the process give me the chills, that is a lot of man-hours just to discover you had a short in one of the coils. great job guys
