Good to hear two normal collectors talking. Saw a video tonight with Gary KingPokemon smirking and bringing out his tired old tales in an interview. He knows full well he made 100's of thousands from Metazoo and the only thing he "collected" he was given for free by the owners. Thats enough for me to know avoid this stuff.
I think way too many people had a financial interest in metazoo from the “influencer” market and made a very pretty penny shilling it and leaving normal collectors or newbies with the bill when everything fell apart. I don’t think it’s good for collecting as a hobby and leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Thanks for tuning in, we’re just two long time ccg collectors and players. Even some of the other feedback I got on this video showed me there’s a lot of people that were way too bought into this and still can’t believe they’re out almost all of their “investment”.
@@boardmatt Coming from the Pokemon space myself as a collector / seller, Gary is the worst. His tactics of basically lying leave a stain on the Pokemon community despite his claims and events of charity. The guy said he never sold a thing in the covid bubble despite often selling cards in his Insta stories not to mention shares in his collection. I was new then so I looked upto people like him and been brutally honest now he's an awful role model. Appreciate the content :) Luckily I did well overall, just by a few dream finds basically. Example I spent 7k on a mint Neo Genesis 1st edition complete set raw with tonnes of 10 worthy cards, yet other people were purchasing a single 1st edition Base Chamander for the same price... due to people like Gary. I just got lucky with finding complete mint sets from one source but others buying the vintage slabs will have got absolutely destroyed for anything but e-Series stuff I imagine.
It's easy to look at stats now of how bad Metazoo is doing which appears there is no popularity and wonder why anyone would like it but there is a legitimate community of people that enjoyed Metazoo back in its hayday and even now still hoping Metazoo may get a second chance with different management. Metazoo had legitimate plans of building a player base and even had Casters Cup and had Towers tournaments that fans did enjoy. There were also metas that changed as each set was released like any other TCGs (lightning Quetz decks to water Manaia decks, etc). Metazoo as a business was just executed horribly and lots of lies and corruption behind the corporate veil. What I hate the most of what has transpired since the Metazoo shutdown is the 100s of non-Metazoo content creators coming out of the woodwork trashing on Metazoo without knowing what really happened during the 3 years or so that Metazoo was active. There is a ton of misinformation and everyone is just standing on top of a mountain trash talking Metazoo - there may be one day that comes when their favorite TCG or show or interest dies and I hope they do not experience what the Metazoo community is experiencing now. We are all people that love shiny cardboard and we should be more understanding, but instead being toxic and mean spirited is chosen instead. I do appreciate you making a video discussing Metazoo though - thank you for keeping the name alive!
Thanks for tuning in! I’m a big believer in big tents with card games. You need all people - collectors, players, investors - to make something work. I think too often one category of those folks is derided, ie the collectors are making cards too expensive! Or investors are taking all the sealed product! It’s a bummer that this was mismanaged so much at the corporate level. Coming from other dead ccgs, it’s a pretty common story. Gamers don’t make good corporate execs, most of the time. Decipher, one of my all time favorites, had some serious embezzlement and issues that led to their downfall. It’s sometimes unfortunate that games in general have to be tied to a corporation but that’s what’s needed to scale things. Money rules the world.
We have been following & have more knowledge. How things have gone down has created an open season. Mike brainstormed this many years ago & promoted it as both a tcg but also to build the IP. Was not to pull off both. This is a story of " your circle is you" ...surround yourself with the wrong ppl & this is what happens. These ppl I believe also changed Mike along the way. He Needed none of these ppl. We will all have our opinions...let these low ppl get their rocks off. Don't lower yourself to their level
The problem with metazoo was always that it's been marketed mostly by alpha investments... rudys "I sell you pallets of a product as an investment". I dont even wanna know how many sealed product there is still out there... The organic demand is a magnitude smaller than the people who got in there because its been marketed to them as an investment.
This is absolutely the case. The monetary incentive for creators or influencers to sell you stuff is very strong. If I was choosing to invest in cardboard, it wouldn’t be in something being hawked by one of those guys.
If there isn't a large pool of players, or at least a pool of people looking to collect sets or other low-end cards, there will be almost zero value in the long tail because the demand just won't be there. Unplayed commons from a maligned set won't ever sell, where for Magic, Pokemon, &c., will always have demand. Eventually MZ cards will find their home, but it's very very illiquid in comparison
There was not much wrong with it other than too complicated the management team just decided to call it quits when the road got hard and run with the money
