Does anyone know where to get patterns for these? I ordered three kits like these online, they don't come with free designs inside like they say on the box! I really wanted to try some designs, I'm disappointed.
That’s a bummer. I have found that a lot of DMC thread packs come with patterns. You could always find patterns on Etsy and substitute colors that you want to use form the thread packs you have purchased.

I wonder if it glows under black light.
I had another comment of this idea. I’m just being stubborn on picking up a black light I will only use to test the theory.
Did you try DMC with black light? I read on a review on Amazon saying it worked with black light

Yes, I think this is how it works. I am ordering mine with a UV light to check for myself
