Thank you for recognizing Rieko Kadama (RIP), very cool & sweet of you, and excellent Japan Sega Mini 2 analysis as usual! Fingers crossed Sega attempts a Dreamcast mini in the future 🤞🏿🎮
that's really cool that the Japanese MD Mini 2 was made in memory of someone's passing, especially someone who had a hand in making the MD a place where plenty of quality RPGs were available.
Great video as always. I bought both this version & the Genesis mini 2. I’m currently learning Japanese because of this mini console. Also, RIP Rieko Kodama. As others said that was a fantastic tribute to her. 58 is way too young.
Got to love Sega there's magic there that takes us back to our childhoods just played through Castle Of Illusion and Quackshot.I know games have moved on but there's something about the Megadrive/Genesis that you cant get in modern games Soul And Heart!
Rieko Kodama also saved the excellent Switch port of Virtua Racing, she retrieved the original game's source code while entire libraries of game source codes have been misplaced forever. Her contributions to Sega are immeasurable, while her friends and family knew her most, I hope they're aware of all the joy she brought to Sega and gaming fans worldwide
I got my Genesis mini 2 a few weeks ago and absolutely love it!! Today I just got my Mega Drive mini 2. I love popful mail. I need to add that I lived in Japan in the 90’s and learned quite a bit of the language and writing. I’m definitely able to play through the Japanese text games.
The Nadia Secret of Blue Water game is still so fucking cool to me. Like it's not... GOOD, but one of my favorite pretty obscure anime series having a Mega Drive game and it fully recreates the opening with sprite art and YM2612 music, it's so fucking awesome I actually modded my original Mini and put the English translated rom on there, so it's funny seeing it officially on the MD Mini 2

Props for the great Rieko Kodama tribute, like most folks I'd never even heard of her til that tidbit about the tribute in the MD mini 2's credits started making the rounds! I did love all of the Switch SEGA AGES ports I picked up (almost everything minus herzog zwei, phantasy star and puyo puyo) all of them easily the definitive versions of each game, no question!
Bit of trivia for you, Star Cruiser was in fact translated to English for international release, it just never saw an international release. The reviews in European Mega Drive magazines praised it, but the public never saw the game outside of Japan.
5:137:04 I think the reason they didn't include Columns III and Starblade on the international Sega Genesis/MD Mini 2 was because they didn't want to have to sell the Sega Tap and Sega Mouse outside of Japan.
The lackluster Sega CD lineup of the Genesis Mini 2, including the lack of Popful Mail, Snatcher, and Both Lunar games, made me mod my Mini 1 to play Sega CD games.
It's missing some games, but also includes some of Sega CD's very best games like Final Fight CD, Sonic CD, Silpheed, Robo Aleste and Ecco CD. Nothing lackluster about those five.
You missed something regarding Ecco CD. Turns out that while we got Ecco 1 and 2 as separate releases on CD in North America, Ecco CD in Japan was a two-disc combo pack. You can select both games from the menu similar to the Space Harriers. Of course this means that this thing technically has 21 CD games while we only got 12...I'm not bitter...
I imported this and am proud to own it. It's a nice display piece and fits with the Japanese Tower 2. Starblade is the game I played with the Cyberstick which was cool!

You’d almost think it would’ve been cheaper to have one version of this device that could do it all. At start up select EU, JP, or NA and get that areas cover art. With each game selected you could pick from available language options available. Heck that would’ve increased amount of playable JP and played NA games by a worthwhile amount also.
Captain Tsubasa reminds me of another soccer game I can't remember the name of it now, but the graphics look very similar and you have different players that have special moves and shots, like hyper shot, bicycle kick and a goalie that does wolf puch to punch the ball away, and that game is in english, I came to think of it because I used to watch my brother play it when I was a kid.
The name of the game is Techmo Soccer if I recall correctly it has the commentator and and other things shown is this game, like how the players block you the field and all, I think it was a NES game however
Got the video notification at 4:00pm Saturday afternoon my time nice! I know I say this alot but I will repeat it once more. There really should have been a video resolution setting in the options of the European model mini and I agree with what you said in your video description about how Sega should next be making an FPGA console that has a way players can buy games off the internet, I would only add that it should also include a cartridge slot for any existing cartridges from back in the day. Gotta keep it physical aswell. R.I.P. Rieko Kodama (Phoenix Rie) spelt (Phenix Rie) in Sonic 1. She was the graphic artist in Alex Kidd In Miracle World and her legacy will never be forgotten in the history of Sega. Top notch videos my Segalord. Keep em' coming.
I agree with your video description I think that if they made a little emulation box that connects to the internet and you can download hell the games that they have up to Dreamcast it would be a good deal. I mean it would be a cool thing to have everything from Sonic to the Dreamcast games and hell, NiGHTS as well. And anything that might require a new translation? Charge a bit more. Basically, bring back a bit of the Virtual Console
I'd buy one of these from Sega and one from Nintendo if they supported all their pre-disk based systems and handhelds. There's just so much there and having an official place to finally permanently buy all of these titles would be nice.
@@penismightier9278 Think it was the Final Fantasy Legend games when the Switch Mana collection came out. Shinobi GG, although that's still on the store so the update might have screwed my sd card a little. Really regretted that update. lol
@@Ciderpunk-jj5es None of the FFL games came out on VC. Also the Mana series and the FFL series are two completely different series, so the collection coming out wouldn't have been an impetus for them to remove your games. I think your SD card might have screwed up.
Actually if you want to enjoy the Captain Tsubasa early games, I highly recommend the amazing fan translation for Captain Tsubasa II full in English. If you learn to play at least 1 Captain Tsubasa RPG, you learned all of them.
The sliding power button on the US release of the US Genesis Mini 2 was a little annoying since it was inaccurate to the original US release. But it made sense for the PAL and Japanese release, since the Mega Drive 2 in Japan and PAL regions did have a sliding power button in its original release.
Captian Tsubasa games are easy to play without knowing Japanese. It takes a bit to memorize what each choice means. I played a couple of Captain Tsubasa games on NES without knowing any Japanese as a kid. They are great games.
Just out interest, I'm wondering if Robo Aleste is still censored in the U.S. version on the Mini? I know the PAL release is not censored but I remember the U.S. original version being censored. I'm wondering if that's why there are two versions available on here. There is a cut scene bridged between stage 4 and stage 5 where Astaros gets up out of her bath to put her robe on after learning the news of a rogue warrior named Kage tearing through the Japanese districts. Anyway there is about 3 seconds where you can see a good picture of Astaros nude with her parts covered by her long hair. This was cut out of the U.S. release on the original Sega-CD, I know because I have played it. Not sure about the Japanese version, most likely uncensored as the Japanese don't usually believe in censoring games.
Yeah I'm passing on the Mini 2. I see no point when I can play all the missing essential games on my hacked Mini 1. I was excited for the Space Harrier II remake at first then I saw the flicker. Good god I seen Master System games that didn't flicker as much.
A buddy of mine is going to japan in december and told me he was excited to pick up the japanese mega drive mini 2 (he speaks and reads japanese). I told him several times that the system is amazon exclusive and that his chance of picking up one up is very low. He didn't want to import the system from amazon of japan I have no idea how that would be a problem... I had the system pre-orderd until I heard that the lunar games wouldn't be in english so I canceld and went with the european release. I think the reason Revenge of Shinobi and Shining Force 2 not being on the system is because they were included in the japanese Mega Drive mini 1.
A sumo wrestling game I didn't know those existed. We got wrestling games boxing games UFC games even kick boxing. So a sumo game Is appropriate I'd love to play it I love most hand to hand combat games
Busted out my sega genesis mini 2 recently and it was alot of fun. Only complaint was that I kept pressing the mode button on the controller by accident. Just the way I was holding it I guess 🥴
I like the mini 2 overall but seriously sega you give us one controller, don’t have one on sale for retail except for the retro bit ones that’s been available since the first mini came out. Seems like they produced the boxes before anything else and figured hey we can only fit one controller on here let’s not bother with another one
Congratulations to sega for finally releasing Sega CD stuff. Over here in Australia the Sega CD wasn't really that big. I mean my friend had one along with the 32x but I never remember seeing it at the local game store. Even the video rentals never had Sega CD. Great video gonna grab this cool little system ❤️
I wish Sega released PAL versions of these machines; while it's nice that there are extra language options, it does feel a bit lazy to just give us the US releases (and more than three times the number of Mega Drives were sold in PAL regions than in Japan).
You mean actual PAL consoles running in 50Hz? Or just a different lineup of games from the U.S. Mini? I have always argued that these Mini consoles are flawed by not giving us the true and honest experiences from back in the day. All they had to do was put in a video resolution option to choose between 50/60Hz, yeah most are gonna choose 60Hz and that's fine, but still add the 50Hz option anyway. Emulators have it and the Mega SG has it. Doesn't matter that it's not the intended way to run the games, SEGA should have let us decide how we want to run the games. Every contingency should have been featured and it wasn't.
How about using one of the translator apps where you hold the camera up to some foreign text to get a real-time translation on the screen? Is that a sensible solution to playing Japanese games? It works well enough when I hold up the app to the text in your video.
16:53 If anyone caught hbomberguy's latest video on the Roblox "oof" and what a massive liar Tommy Tallarico is, he points out that there were a lot of women involved in classic video game development, especially music and art design, who never got credit because of sexism in Japanese work culture in the 80s and 90s. For example, most of Street Fighter II's soundtrack was composed by a woman whose real name wasn't given in the credits. Capcom, Konami, Sega of Japan, Nintendo, they all had lots of women on their development teams who were never really credited directly for their hard work and exceptional skill. It's high time they be remembered for their contribution to the hobby that means so much to us all.
That's Westernized cow fertilizer. Gamers from the past and present in and out of Japan know and deeply respect the designers, developers, producers and presidents in the JP game industry who are women. Just to inform you, they weren't hidden by any stretch of the imagination
@@gc3k Yoko Shimomura, who is well known and respected today, composed nearly all of the original Street Fighter II soundtrack, but was not credited by name. She was not credited in any future console release either. Capcom's sound team in the 80s and 90s was almost entirely women, but their work was either credited to someone else or not credited at all. I'm not accusing gamers of not respecting women in gaming. I'm just saying that many women in gaming were long hidden by the industry, and that we should be aware of that.
14:34 Does anyone know what song is playing here? It's SO familiar. I know it's the ending song to a popular Sega game, I just can't remember which one. Please help.
I preordered the American version a month in advance. Amazon gave me a delivery date of the 4th of November. But iit still hasn't shipped yet. Anyone else experiencing this?
I was worried this would have a disappointed tone to it, but halfway through, it seems like this product is a-okay! Just... still DYING for Lunar over here.
What did Sega use a Raspberry Pi 1 for the Genesis Mini instead of building their own emulator that's specifically designed for these retro systems you thought they would but they didn't I bet you they didn't
Why didn't they just make a version of Space Harrier to that would work on the Sega CD Hardware? The Sega CD had sprite scaling Hardware built in as well as an extra X68000 processor ooh they missed the mark on this....
@@VOAN TRUE, however the 32X had no hardware based sprite scaling, and do to the cartridge bus limitations, games were limited to 30 frames per second.....

I can't imagine how that'd be fun to play an entire RPG through for 40 hours. No thanks.
2018 Flashback, Megadrive 1, or Megadrive 2? Can these Megadrives have SD card compatibility? Which of the 3 is mostly recommended?
RIP Phoenix Rie
Ya the game list on the US version blows my brain honestly.
13:24 I know enough Japanese to tell that these characters are upside-down and at 13:32, these characters are mirrored.
R.I.P. Rieko Kodama.
You can use Google Translate in camera mode, Japanese => English. It works well if you hold your phone in portrait mode.
Playing a 40 hour RPG that way sounds grueling.
8:40 You should make a video on what games that you think could and should be on a hypothetical Mega Drive Mini 3.
I plan to.
Just like the first Genesis mini, I really wish I could've bought the English Genesis variant of the Tower of Power...oh well.
Anyone knows the voltage on the Japanese MD Mini 2? Can I use a normal charger/ac adapter that comes with the console on a 220V socket?
14:34 Does anyone know what song is playing here? It's SO familiar. I know it's the ending song to a popular Sega game, I just can't remember which one. Please help.
Super Street Fighter II ending music.
@@SegaLordX Oh, my gosh!! Of course! Thank you so much! 😅
Silky lip looks pretty good, I’ve searched and searched but I can find an English translation
Yeah I got the US and japanese versions.
You rock segalordx
What did Sega use a Raspberry Pi 1 for the Genesis Mini instead of building their own emulator that's specifically designed for these retro systems you thought they would but they didn't I bet you they didn't
I'm guessing the rights were murky since Working Designs folded long ago
Why didn't they just make a version of Space Harrier to that would work on the Sega CD Hardware? The Sega CD had sprite scaling Hardware built in as well as an extra X68000 processor ooh they missed the mark on this....
Kinda pointless since the 32X already got the game. They should had just put in the 32X version here but instead they want to port it instead.
@@VOAN TRUE, however the 32X had no hardware based sprite scaling, and do to the cartridge bus limitations, games were limited to 30 frames per second.....
Once I get all three us/Jon/European versions I’ll make a mod on them and put lunar1-2,popful mail and Snatcher.
does anyone know if the Genesis mini 2 controller 🎮 will work on the Genesis mini 1
