I say this a lot, it’s a good album for the time it came out. In a post pop punk era where alt indie was making its way to the mainstream. And a lot of alternative rock influence is all over this album. It’s not Jerry Finn blink, it’s not cassette era bleach blond blink. It’s in its own feeling on this one. Kaleidoscope is probably one of the best songs off that album. The mark dis tracking at Tom is so underrated and not subtle across the entire album. “Oh Tom you want me to do the chores for natives? Here’s your fucking chores super star.” Just peak petty and I love it
Some days it is a top 3 blink album for me, sometimes it isn't. The highs are high, but are there are like 4-5 songs I don't really care for. I find myself listening to a Playlist I made of my favorite neighborhood tracks mixed with my favorite Dogs Eating Dogs tracks lol
neighbourhoods was a natural continuation of the untitled era sound - blink went from angsty and aggressive to depressive and dark with this album. The spacey sound they had developed during the 2004 live shows make a reappearance here, although gained down to suit Tom's new guitar rig. It got even better with Dogs Eating Dogs, it felt like they'd truly refined the sound and Tom and Critter did a great job producing, it was probably their best produced album until One More Time
I remember seeing them live and they debuted a ton of these songs before the album was out. I liked it back then and now, I never knew that people didn't generally.
The generational difference is fascinating to me. I’m a bit older, just turned 40 and I was 13 when I heard “dammit” on the radio for the first time. By the time neighborhoods came out, their sound had changed so drastically from 1997 that an entire generation grew up on neighborhoods. It’s interesting that you didn’t perceive the patchworked production (the guitar tones, drums, vocals, etc have very different tones from song to song) because you were so invested in the music itself. I’ve always felt neighborhoods was ok. I didn’t hate it but it was definitely a step down for those of us from the pop punk era of them.
To me it just kinda felt forced… they ended up breaking up again lol One More Time… is amazing in my opinion! Finally feels like they’re back and on great terms! Can’t wait for part 2!
Top 10 blink albums for me: 1. Untitled 2. TOYPAJ 3. Enema Of The State 4. Neighborhoods 5. Dude Ranch 6. One More Time 7. Cheshire Cat 8. Nine 9. California 10. Dogs Eating Dogs
It was my first Blink Album (beside greatest hits) I bought from my own money. I always liked it but still back then i thought Enema, TOYPAJ and Selftitled were all way better and more cohesive than this one. Eventhough I love Toms vocal color on this album, I always thought he sounded bored, and you could feel that he didn't really care for Blink at the time. I would probably rank it over California and Nine and maybe Cheshire Cat (?) but that's about it. Top 3 songs are imo Natives, Kaleidoscope and Wishing Well.
Neighbourhoods probably isn’t a masterpiece…but by God is it a REALLY good piece of work! It’s deceptively progressive, probably let down by its production. (Would have loved to have seen someone like Gil Norton or maybe Butch Vig work on this.) One of my favourite aspects of the album is the lack of “na-na-nas” (California was exhausting for this reason) and the lack of teenage related lyrical content (again, please see California above). It actually felt like a punk rock album for 20/30somethings, and for that reason, it sits in my Top 3 (with Dude Ranch & untitled).
For me it sounds like they didn’t really work together on this album. Like everybody made their own parts, glued it together and got over with it. It feels like they just weren’t fully in for it again. That´s what I don‘t like about this and the next record. „One more time“ is the first record in the original line up that doesn’t feel like this.

My favorite blink record

For me he sounds invested. More so than Mark or Travis over there anger at tom spearheading the direction.

One more time suffered from the reverse. Im fine with blink not writing teenage stuff. Fell in love and edging just felt to teenage.
Neighborhoods is still a top 3 Blink Album for me, if not Number 1

Neighborhoods is awesome
