➡️ Hearing Blink-182 instantly transports me back to high school the second I hear their sound, but I've never heard much beyond their well-known singles such as "Dammit", "I Miss You", or "All The Small Things". You guys have been requesting "Carousel", which I'm learning is one of the first songs the band ever wrote! Mark Hoppus kicks off the track with a beautiful chordal bass groove that establishes the song's melodic motif all the way until the very end. When I started playing bass this was a song I was determined to learn how to play. To the point where my brothers friends would be over and shout at me "learn a new song!" Anyhow my band at the time covered it and I felt like I finally could play something that made me feel like I could keep up with my band that was much more talented than me.
I saw a live clip on them doing this song in 2000ish and Mark lead into the song by saying “I wrote this song 7 years ago, I’ve been playing it every day since, and I still can’t get it right!” 😂

Blink was notorious for not being the best musicians Tom struggled with What's My Age Again alot too
Mark is the reason I learned to play the bass. His alternate picking style and bass strumming is genius.
Not to mention him starting from that old school straight Down stroke play till your arm falls off background. Then Jerry Finn and him coming with ICONIC sound with all the compressors but mainly combining a lot of octave/chord progressions combined with the recorded root note basic notes (a lot on self titled)
Mark Hoppus was the reason I picked up a bass in the first place. Such an underrated player I think. Thanks for covering this!

I can never really decide for the best blink bassline, but Mutt is definitely the most fun to play by far. Half the time I pick up my bass I end up playing the bouncy prechorus /chorus bit.

Absolutely. Mutt is insanely underrated as a bass song, probably because the intro part is so simple. People forget.

They aren't wrong note. He plays the same notes in both versions on Buddah and Cheshire. Its an intentional key change.

Another pop punk Stingray player from this era is Mike Herrera, frontman of MxPx and current bassist of Goldfinger. They've got a lot of good bass-forward songs, with one of their more popular early ones being Chick Magnet. There's an official bass playthrough from Mike on TH-cam.

Hey Mark Cheshire was actually recorded with a 1985 Fender P bass with an EMG pickup. Mark Hoppus himself confirmed this on his Discord server. Mark started using Sting Rays after this record until around spring or summer 1997, switched to a Fender P Bass live, you can see it on Warped Tour 1997 videos, Dammit music video , and into fall 1997 then back to Sting Rays again in 1998 and back to Fender in 1999-Present.
Tom (guitar) used an early 90s Squire Stratocaster, stock single coil pickups using position 4 blending the middle and neck pickups on this record and the demos before it.

Marks most prominent uses of the Stingray would be Adams Song and What's My Age Again I think?

Tom did use a Les Paul on some recordings I believe, Dude Ranch and some Enema of the State? Then when he got the Fender deal they got him the Seymour Duncan Invader. And Mark got the Duncan quarter pound bass pickups.
I installed a set on my ‘92 PBass back in 2004 and they are really good passive pickups, imo. Of course I didn’t wire in the tone knob with them a la Blink. Sounds great through an SVT head with an 8x10. And then when I wanted a thicker sound the Boss bass EQ pedal got turned on.
@@jaydee659 Tom used his Sticker Strat on Dude Ranch - 1994 American Standard Stratocaster DiMarzio X2N in the bridge, Seymour Duncan JB Jr in the middle and Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the neck. He always played the bridge X2N pickup though.
Tom probably / likely used one of his Les Paul’s on Enema Of The State but I have yet to see definitive proof. I do have studio pics from the Enema sessions with his amps though and him playing a Telecaster which was most likely for some cleans on that record. Tom used a lot of Jerry Finn’s gear for TOYPAJ and Untitled.
The earliest I’ve seen Mark used Quarter Pounders is either 1999 or 2000, but there’s bigger Mark gear heads on his Discord that would know for sure.
Mark does know how to play guitar but he mainly played bass throughout his career. He was the bassist in a band before blink where he mostly covered The Cure and Descendents. He has written a lot of blink-182s guitar riffs. He wrote the riffs for Dammit, Going Away to College, What’s My Age Again?, Adam’s Song, Man Overboard, The Rock Show and so on.

This song and Time are the reasons I got into pop punk and the reasons I started playing bass. It brings back such good memories. When I saw them live before the break up, at like 33 years old or so, and Mark got on the ground to start playing this track I got as excited as a 12 year old. Their discography brings me back to a simpler time and I will never stop listening to them.
My favorite version of this song is Live in Chicago 2001. Mark on his signature Jazz bass through a stack of Ampeg 8x10s, Travis on drums instead of Scott, the tempo is even faster, the explosions of fire, atticus shirts, macbeth shoes, it's just all so fucking good.
Time is an amazing song
Mark has said that this song was him trying to write something like the beginning of "Happy" by Ned's Atomic Dustbin, who had the unusual line up of two bass players, one playing chords/melodies up high, and another doing the more 'traditional' role. Would be really interesting to see you take a look at them and discuss the dynamics of the two different styles working together!

@LowEndUniversity I think I requested NAD previously, but if you check out their song Titch you can absolutely hear the comparison to Carousel. I believe it’s Marks favourite NAD song, he has mentioned a few times. Happy is also a great NAD song, but not as bass heavy. Those guys have two bass players! Also, Mark Hoppus took a lot of inspiration from Dinosaur Jr in the early days. You can definitely hear he has a similar style.
If you ever do a Blink song again, I recommend Always. There’s multiple bass tracks in that song including one of those Roland Synth basses you hold like a real bass.

I've been a Blink fan my whole life and always loved loved loved the intro to this song. I grew up playing guitar and at 37 finally grabbed a bass which I've been learning. I literally found out today that the intro to Carousel is a bass line. Mind blown. Learning it now!

I actually got to hang out with Mark when we saw them in Austin right before rhe Dude Ranch tour and he told me a lot if his bass influence came from the early 90's alternative band Neds Atomic Dustbin., they have 2 bass players in that band and one uses a Stingray and plays a lot of what you hear Mark playing in early Blink. If you haven't heard of Neds Atomic Dustbin check out Happy and you'll hear Blink style riffs in the Stingray player

One more comment lol: Tom is a Master of Melody, his guitar is some of the catchiest stuff you'll hear. Check out Enthused which is an earlier song, basically a guitar instrumental. The chord progression in Carousel is a Blink staple, they use it a lot and it always works. Also Carousel is literally the very First song Mark and Tom wrote together.

I remember buying their back catalog after enema and learned those songs on bass, then I heard this and fell in love. Hadn't heard a bass played in chords before. As someone who’s a guitarist and not much of a bassist, that arpeggio line Mark plays is always my go to riff when I sit down with my bass.

Guitar player here for 20 yrs (dang getting old) and I swear I probably listened to my dad playing the bass in the womb bc every where I go the bass line just hits me. And yes this is one of my fave songs by Blink so much so that I play the bass line on the guitar just because I love it so much.
Blink and Green Day got me to play the bass after my dad fruitlessly tried for like three years. The late 90s and early 2000s wouldn’t have been as fun without them.

One of their best songs for sure. I still have a tape cover of this Cheshire Cat that only says blink. It was before they got sued and added the 182. Love this album and especially this song. Loved listening to my Chesire Cat CD and learning all the guitar parts in my bedroom when I was a kid in Jr High. Unintentionally, they made me a great guitar player by the time I arrived to high school. Always felt connected to them, even though I grew up in Utah - I was born in San Diego and lived there until I was 12.

Nice! Glad you finally got to this one after awhile. Mark is the reason I started my musical journey and decided to play bass as the first instrument I ever learned. Still have my Mark Hoppus signature bass from ‘03. I recommend “Feeling This” from them with more chordal bass techniques he does too.

The Stingray is used a lot in 90s west coast punk. It became the P bass but it started with a Stingray.
Saw them in Santa Barbara right after they released this album. They were still jusr Blink then and hadn't yet added the "182". Maybe 50 people in the crowd.
I always loved Scotts drums and feel like he was overshadowed by Travis. I like Travis a lot too, but there is something about their first albums drums that I really like.

This is a fascinating first album to look at for songwriting because it’s really just a hodgepodge of influences that created a somewhat distinctive sound. Tom has talked about when they were writing Cheshire Cat they would be so blatant as to say, “this is the NOFX part” or “this is the Bad Religion part” or even so far as “this is our Descendants song” entirely and “this is our Screeching Weasel song.”
Sometimes it takes a first album like that to lead an artist to finding their own voice. I think this one is particularly effective.

Oh boy, old Blink is such a ride, Mark had some pretty fun and creative bass playing back in the day. Also, you mention Sum 41 at 7:30, you REALLY should revisit them, Cone is a beast.
I heard dammit on a late night show called odd something on mtv way back and fell in love. I went to the record store the next day and bought Cheshire Cat and of course heard this first. At the time I was looking for dude ranch but bought the wrong album.. I told them to order me the blink 182 record and this is what they ordered. Even though it wasn’t dude ranch I was really happy with this album. I was able to order dude ranch from cd now a week later. My friends and I spent so much time trying to learn this song. I was able to get it on guitar but my friend struggled on the bass.
12:39 Tom has talked about the reason that he and Mark first clicked musically when they met was that they both played downstrokes, largely due to their mutual influence from bands like The Descendants

First of all...HOW HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD THIS?! It's like their OG song. I wish they'd re-record, remaster, idk whatever, redo it now that they're back together. Here's a song request: "Olive Me" by NOFX. I don't play but I love the opening bass riff.
Fun fact, that track is also released by them as “All Of Me” and is a cover. In fact it’s been covered nearly 900 times since the 1930s. They also did “Vincent” by Don McLean (1971) which to date has over 200 versions recorded by various artists.
It’ll probably get remastered at some point and they’ll probably play it live again too if they haven’t already

Their original drummer Scott who played on this album was just a young kid. I don’t think he was out of high school yet, but he was a metal drummer so he just took what he knew and sped it up by 11. As a guitar player who ended up playing bass for the band, most of my lines had double stops or chords included. I learned from Mark and Tom at 15 and after spending time with other bands like Sum 41, Fenix TX, Green Day and other pop-punkers of my late 90’s and early 2000’s childhood.

Yeah! Fast and beautiful! One of my favorite bass lines ever. The simple but fast tempo on drums is incredibly hard too. Simple beat but hard to execute well. Scott Raynor is a totally underrated drummer! Great video! Ben Wah Balls is another great bass line from Cheshire Cat. BEN WAH BALLS NEXT! PLEASE!!!!!

Most underrated Strung Out song has to be "Vanity". Definitely one of my favorites. The rhythmic overlays, vocal harmonies, lyrics, and just overall depth of feeling in the song is just awesome. It's definitely slower and no face melting solos, but it's just a good solidly written track.
