  • Life Mart is a convenience store chain based in Yekaterinburg, Russia. With more than 350 locations, the stores combine fresh and healthy food with a coffee shop and dining area. Could this open-store concept work outside of Russia?

What do you think of this type of store. With no main counter to purchase items from. Simple grab what you want, and pay at a self-service check out. Would this work where you live n the world? Is this the future of convenience stores around the world?

I'm not sure if it was only me who noticed it. Lots of cities in RUSSIA are mostly clean. The design of buildings, especially the main landmarks, are spectacular. In the UK the incidence of shop lifting has soared since supermarkets introduced self service cashier points were installed so much so that many have now erected one way barriers. Some others have also taken them out altogether.
Personally I want to be served by a human being. Also the number of times there is an issue with a scanned item on self service such that you have to call an assistant. You also need an assistant to do an age check when buying items such as alcohol.
It also seems that very few self service points accept cash.
In summary the self checkouts get a thumbs down from me.

Hey Russel, thanks for another video from my home town! The shop does give off some 7- Eleven vibes for sure, but didn't Japanese completely change it to what it now is? Maybe it is the time to change it once again?
One thing I noticed is, there's plastic everywhere. Here in Aus most packaging is now paper or cardboard, it has changed A LOT over the last 3-4 years. I am not just talking cardboard food bowls or coffee cups or paper straws but computers and TV packaging. Also, reusable coffee cups like my glass KeepCup that gets me ¢50 discount at my local coffee shop in Melbourne - I haven't bought a disposable cup in years (and saved a few hundreds of them, if you think about it). Hope this helps!

Interestingly, in Soviet times, everyday products almost never had plastic packaging. For example, a seller would simply wrap a piece of sausage or butter in wrapping paper. And milk / sour cream bottles were regularly reused for a second or third time. When the new times of capitalism arrived, the plastic packaging came from the West in huge quantities. Ecological Soviet methods began to be considered backward and anachronistic, inconvenient for customers.

Russia is short of 15 million workers. There is a shortage of personnel in all sectors of the economy.
