I had the same problem with my petrol tank Just put baking soda & vinegar in it for a couple of days & shake it now and again Then a rust remover of some kind and finally a petrol tank sealant Works like a treat
I really admire your spirited dedication. Carbs can frustrate the hell out of everyone. Keep it up, I can't wait to see you ride as the (very) distinguished gentleman you are..
Been watching through a lot of your videos for the past few months. I've always wanted a garage project but my mechanical knowledge is limited to working on go-karts between the age of 7-15 (I'm now 27). Thanks to you I just bought a non-running 1990 Kawasaki GT750 on ebay for £530, I'm not sure if this is a thank you or a rant. Only time will tell...Here's hoping its just a battery and a carb clean needed or I'm way out my depth.
The dark art of carb tuning,my experience with a twin 2stroke taut me that the slaveing carb neads subtle changes after sincronizing but its a dark art lol, nice one you so close to completion now.
You should name the cx the "Gremlin", because it seems that after you kill one gremlin two more pop up. Great vid. I'd run the fuel line all the way around the top of the carb and back down to the fuel nipple on the carb so there is a little more slack. The cylinder misfire seems like carbs unbalanced or a low power coil on that side. You can see if the coil is misfiring by using a timing gun. If your timing light is flashing inconsistently then you may have a bad coil, or something to do with the ignition on that side.
Those CV carbs need the boost pump built into the fuel petcock to give the extra pressure needed to make them work properly. They come from the factory with it installed. The second cylinder is starving fuel. You will get a richer mix when the flame is going lean when you install it. Hope this helps...
If you've cleaned the tank out properly, changed the filter in there, you could get away without an in line filter for quite some time. Don't forget, it's mainly shite from the rust inside your tank and running it low on fule that causes the problem. That kink in the pipe will probably end up "pissing" you off in the long term. Sorry, I wrote this before the end. If you put a couple of hooks in your bench you can tie stuff down with a strap.
Had the same problem with my new project! Still doing some videos to try to make something nice to watch. One of the problems I had was bad earth. The other was all the dirt on the fuel tap and carb. All that solved I managed to start the bike but only works with the air open. Trying to give it more fuel for it to hold on but not lucky til now...
Yeah, I did that with a piece of stainless steel flatware (I believe it was a butter knife that rusted in the dishwasher) - I used lemon juice overnight and it DEFINITELY works! TH-cam is such a great pool of resources! So many people who know how to do things properly!
If it hasn't been said yet, K&N filters are designed for flow with the oil. It shouldn't restrict anything. Also, though a fuel filter should flow both ways, I'm thinking you might be better off turning the filter around.
Rognvald Jaeger Dandy if you turn the filter around you wouldn’t see any dirt from the tank it would be hidden behind the element. Hence the reason inline fuel filters like these have a direction of flow on them.
Any dirt in the fuel that got to the carbs before you installed the inline filter may be fouling one of the jets, also I've known this problem to be caused by failing HT leads and failing coils
Hi, Good luck with those carbs, I hate them! I binned mine for a set a Murrays carbs. Not saying you need to buy his stuff, but a Makuni conversion would make loads off difference, much more responsive :) Keep up the good work :)
I hope you get there, I can't wait to see it on the road. I've just watched a cx video and the guy was asked about his jetting, he say's he opened the dampers. might be worth considering? th-cam.com/video/Xax_z5diwLE/w-d-xo.html
Same here. When I went to an open exhaust and pod filters I could never quite get the jetting right on the stock CV carbs. It idled and ran ok but there was always a "flat spot" somewhere in the powerband when I rode it. I finally caved and bought Murray's Mikuni kit and it was a bolt-on fix to all of my fueling problems. Worth every penny.
You need to modify the air office tubes where they are pressed into the carbie bells and mod the pilot jets and don't forget the needles remember barometric pressure 101
Hi mate good video I've got a gs550 with CV carbs on +k&n .had trouble tuning them I've had to buy dyno jet kit .but first part of throttle was still bad .I bought a colour tune kit after watching your video on the gs .but when I tuned it so it was blue on ideal the bike didn't want to run kept popping through carbs so I turned the air screw out 3 1/2 turns bike ran a lot better but the colour wasn't blue anymore. So perhaps you could try turn yours out a little more see if it helps. 😁
Popping tends to mean too lean, so probably best to go more fuel. Blue flame is perfect, white means you'll be burning your rings quickly. I mean it runs great, I think I'm being too fussy without giving the bike a proper run on the road
I've seen people wrap electrical tape around pod filters to limit air flow but not all the way. Just leave about an inch uncovered and that should help with the flat spot for now.
I run cheap pods on my xs650 glued a fine mesh inside them so it runs standard but without the big air box you can also glue fine foam rubber to the mesh on the inside of them,kn air filters for mine cheapest iv seen £84 cheers
For The Bold - dreegez it’s vm’s on your wee GS a lot nicer to work wit, but to be fair you have a better chance with cv’s on a twin like your Honda but they can be thrown all to pot even on a windy day.
Do your Keihin CVs have an accelerator pump to cover that first bit of throttle-up, or are they an earlier generation carbs without the pump? That level of fuel grit is well out-of-bounds from acceptable. Even your in-line filters are going to keep having their pores clogged. Get the grit out of your tank. (Easy to say; much harder to accomplish.)
My CXs have both had accelerator pumps so I remain ignorant about relative differences. Try the CX500 Forum about the response characteristics of the pump-less carbs as throttle is first applied. I know some Forum members seem to prefer not to have the pumps--but I also figure the pumps must have been invented for a reason... right...? maybe...? Perhaps it's something to learn to accept. Again: I'm ignorant, so good luck!
run a longer line for inline fuel filter. seal all wires, seal positive at battery. no one does this, i always go behind boat yard workers and do it. IF they have a reason?, my method works for decades.
Hope all is well. Just checking in on you, brother. I don't think I'll be able to participate in the DGR this year. My bike is still not legal and I have a bald front tire.
I'm good thanks, Ah that's a shame about the bike but attendance in itself is all important to help raise awareness. It's going to be a close call on getting the CX500 ready
Wanted to know if anyone in the community to answer a mechanical question.. I've got a 73 cb550, and want to know if the high beam will still turn on with the bike if I disconnect the wiring to the highbeam controls on the bars? Like will it work without controls
@@forthebold try rigging up a small coke bottle with some leaded fuel and see if it helps the idle. Here in South Africa we call it LRP and I run it on my katana1100... Yup, an oil change first and see if it goes.

IMO the oil doesn't restrict it. It's only to take the smallest dust what I've heard

one step forward, one hundred steps back! Having to remake the complete wiring loom :(

Perhaps you need to increase the size of the idle get up a couple. That would seem to make sense with the increased air flow with the pods.
Idle is perfect now, colortune at the end of the video shows the bike is idling with a blue flame.

Citric acid and hot water - cleans rust off like hell, nothing but bare metal. Cleaned several tanks this way.

Excellent, good to hear it.
Any dirt in the fuel that got to the carbs before you installed the inline filter may be fouling one of the jets, also I've known this problem to be caused by failing HT leads and failing coils
Yeah it did. That's why it didn't start in the first bit. Had to clean all the carbs and take apart again
You can get smaller fuelline filters of you like... I use them to.
Definitely need some of those
Hi, Good luck with those carbs, I hate them! I binned mine for a set a Murrays carbs. Not saying you need to buy his stuff, but a Makuni conversion would make loads off difference, much more responsive :) Keep up the good work :)
I've heard horror stories of these Kehein CV carbs but I have to admit that they proved to be a lot easier than I was expecting, so far seems good.

All good, have you heard it on the road video, worked a treat.
That's one flaming bike!!
Yup.
Both the bikes (GS55O, CX500)seems to be same in design, looking forward for more changes in design perspective coming future
Really? I thought the CX500 was radically different to the GS
sarat chandra I don’t know what videos you have been watching but apart from both having two wheels they couldn’t be any different.

I find it better to sync the carbs first, before the colour tune.
Ironically,if they are synced properly, don’t even bother with the colour tune.👍🏾🛠🏍
They can all be synced but still running rich or lean. Which is why I like to colortune too.

CV carbs are more bother than they are worth with pod filters. VM’s all the way.
No doubt, VMs are a lot easier, I have to admit these CVs haven't been as bad as I anticipated.I was expecting a lot worse.

Maybe the ignition problem with cylinder 2 is caused by the different intake manifold length, which could delay the air/fuel income
That’s actually really clever thinking. It is a vast difference in length
This tangue color is very beautiful. Congratulations and a big hug my friend. I always follow your video. And I like 105.
Is it possibly the pilot/slow jet? Am I right in thinking its the pilot jet that takes over from zero to quarter throttle. Idle seems 100%
I have the same issue but my pilot jet is fixed unfortunately.
Love the choke 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Btw. Why didn't you paint the front tire texts?
I didn't want any attention on the front tyre, I wanted it to go all to the rear.
Njaah.. a beautiful build deserve attention all around 💪

Such a pain that those copper washers are not captive on the colourtune plug. Makes it soooo fiddly.
Do you have a link for the choke lever please?
Why are you not cleaning and coating the inside of the that tank?
Cleaned once. But a year ago. Haven't coated this tank with POR15 yet as I didn't think it needed it. Unlike the GS550 but I will be on this now
i love your channel!!!bravo
