So sorry about your pup, Ben. Losing our furry family members is one of the hardest things in this life. I pray they are on the other side waiting for us when it's our turn. Sweet CX500, BJ. Nice work.
I have such a sentimental soft spot for the CX and it’s so nice to see somebody who takes such good care of them and enjoys them like I did. The on-board view brings back such happy memories (albeit on the other side of the World!) 👍🇬🇧
I went to go and look at 1 today, I mentioned to a friend about the bike and he mentioned you guys in London, saying they were racking up 1/4 million miles.
Great sounding bike,I've a stupid grin on my face for the whole ride. My first bike was a1979 cx500 ex Irish police (Garda) bike a popular courier motorbike👏🏻🇮🇪👍🏻

On my motorcycles I never go near an Interstate highway, never look for the shortest route to get somewhere. I totally agree back roads are the best. One of my favorite things to do in an unfamiliar area is just to get lost wandering around and discover new things. I had a CX500 (bought new) when I was in college, thanks for the lovely memories! RIP Ben, I'm sure he had a good life with you.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In the UK when they first came out they were christened the Plastic Maggot but were very popular with dispatch riders for being ultra reliable. Enjoy.
Of all my bikes in the past 50 years of riding, my all time favourite love was my '82 CX500Turbo. I had it repainted in Gloss Midnight Black, and with the gold anodized wheels, oof! It was the classiest looking thing. Went all over the western/southern US on it, from up here in Northern Canada, back in the early 90's. The stator would burn out like clockwork, every 22,000 KM's though, and back then I sadly did not have the knowledge/time/money/place to work/tools etc., to keep replacing them. After the 4th one went at close to 100,000 KM's, I had to sadly move on. I've bitterly regretted having to do that all these years, sigh.
Seeing you swing that ratchet, I had a hard time learning how careful you have to be around chrome and paint. I also picked up on the bath towel on the bench so small parts don't run away like a toddler with a marble in its mouth. Enjoy spending time with you. Thanks for what you do. Looks like some nice roads. Here in Michigan nice roads are far a few between. But they are working on it. Nice spot ! It is beautiful. The terrain is very similar to northern Michigan.
Swinging a ratchet into paint is something we have all done. I'm always cautious but every now and then I get into a hurry and make contact. There are many things we all do like the towels in our own spaces.
Good old CX500, this was my first bike after a 30 year break from riding. Next was a 1986 Concour 1000, then a BMW R1000RT, Honda ST1100, BMW R1100RS, BMW K1200RS, and finally on September 27th I scored a 2007 Electra Glide Custom with the full tour pack. First time on a Harley and I understand the loyalty now.
Watched this channel off and on and recently came back 'cause I bought a GS550 and it is so weird, only now, recognizing these roads in your videos! They deserve the praise. Femme Osage Creek is my favorite.
Thanks Ben, sweet country riding, so scenic, onboard the best bike ever made too! Nice to see a unmodified CX video, I love my 1981 CX500 Shadow, 100% complete and original (except for new parts like modern stator and ignition system!)
Had one for 12 years 79Z, changed the back wheel for the 16 inch ditched the cdi for an ignitech put a G8 stator in, new cam chain and guides new mech seal, did 70,000 miles on it, then sold it big mistake, you can put a 650 clutch in you need the gear and shim if i remember right, totally changes the revs at cruising speeds, like you though you love em or hate em for me the best bike Honda ever made, watching the vid brought a lot of memories back that sound is wonderful hear the gears whistle magic
My first bike was a CX500. I thought the transverse V, water cooling, shaft drive, and disk brake made it the coolest model. Bought a used one around 1985, that was set up as an early sport tourer with a Vetter Windjammer fairing, rear rack, and passenger back rest. That sound brought back memories.
I had one 30+ years ago, loved it.. great bike to go touring very smooth and comfortable. Would love to ride one again just to see if I still feel the same about it.
Hi BJ that is running sweet man nice bike , nice roads and scenery also so sad to hear about your dog they defo become one of the family take care mate and wish you well 👍👌❤️🐾❤️
Thanks for sharing your ride. I've got a 1975 CB550 that hasn't been in roadworthy condition in 8 years. About 1000 in parts and a full weekend would do the trick. Chain, sprockets, tires, tubes, brakes, battery, and seat is shot. Engine purrs though.

Thank you for your channel and for taking the time to share your work as well as your rides! Cheers. Btw, Im sorry to hear the loss of your doggie. I lost my best friend of 14 years last fall. It really hurts.
Looks great. I've been through several bikes over the last 5 years since I restarted motorcycling, all new or mostly, but for some reason the CX500 has recently captured my attention and I'm planning to get one soon (I lost out on one by one day just yesterday). It looks like a dream - simple and just powerful enough and a nice sound.
@@BrickHouseBuilds Follow up, I found a 1980 CX500 a few miles away, picked it up, been wrenching on it for the last 3 weeks or so, and I love the thing. I've owned several brand new bikes over the last 7 years, but this is my favorite. I also put a 14mm new master cylinder on, but I also put on a twin piston front brake caliper found on eBay, originally for a 1983 GL650I Silverwing. Bolt on replacement and improved the braking. I'm only up to about $1500 on the whole project including insurance and registration. This bike makes me want to jump on it and ride it across the country every time I think about it. I don't know what it is about it but I love the thing.
Great video as usual BJ sorry about your dog. I know what that s like. It s hard. Your videos are great. It’s not fair that they have such a short life, but we live for such a long time. You are an inspiration to me. Im on the look out for a nice CX500, and maybe one day I’ll come across a CBX that needs rebuilt, but probably not. Even with the problems you have with yours you are lucky to have found one. They are almost impossible to find
Well I very much appreciate that. Ben was nuts for ice cream so I spoiled him these last few months. It was definitely a hard one but I'm lucky to have had those 12 years with him ❤️
Ben , so sorry for your loss . Each times one of my good boys passed away , I swear to never suffer another time . But some time later a little puppy coming again 🤗 I am a Boxer man , for 4 times to this day. Nice ride on this stock CX500C . I going to buy a 82 blue next week ! Jerome from France

The first road I showed is becoming a new favorite. All the roads are being redone and are very very smooth! The time of day had a major impact on traffic levels though.
Glad to see the CX running well 👍 My ride down to your open house took such a turn for the better when I hit Missouri. I'm jealous of your states roads and definitely plan on riding down in that area again. Some of the best twisty/hilly/tree covered roads I've ever been on. And I'm sorry to hear about your doggo 😢
Hey BJ, absolutely love your vids!! I really enjoyed this and have been following the CX 500’s intently🤘🏻🤘🏻 Looking at the roads you did, myself and my mate did little under 400 miles yesterday through some of quite possibly the most beautiful parts of Scotland you could imagine! Similar looking to what you did in this video, with the trees, mountains and superb views. If… I mean WHEN!! You find yourself Scotland side, it would be a pleasure to share a few of the thousands of miles of great roads we do on the regular, and our whisky ain’t that bad either, if you’re a fan😜 Sorry about wee Ben❤️ No doubt he was an absolute legend!
I was actually in Scotland earlier this year! I had mentioned it a lot as the goal was the Scottish Motorcycle Show in Edinburgh. It was BEYOND beautiful there. 400 miles is a lot of ground there. I made a video on my trip actually th-cam.com/video/XdDxX5eKeNg/w-d-xo.html
Hopefully your Ben is running around with my Lola up there. Cx500‘s are an engineering masterpiece, I dispatched on one as a courier in London back in the early 80‘s and have also worked on them as a mechanic. The only things I changed were fork-springs and rear suspension as they were way too soft when adding luggage and a passenger and let’s face it, they’re probably well sagged down after some 40 odd years or so. Best greets from Düsseldorf 😉
Hey mate. We probably saw each other on the roads in London. I dispatched (couriered) over there as well (like a lot of Aussies) Rode a CX mostly as well. I worked for a small company called Challenger mostly as well as West One.
@@Marcspix. I was with Addison Lee and changed to Security Despatch, both in Covent Garden. Fantastic times! Heard there’s hardly any despatch riders left anymore. In our days it was summat like 25,000. I‘ve moved on from blighty and live and work in Düsseldorf 😉
@@SherKhan-b1kes Addison Lee! I was trying to think of their name. I started with them because they had a beginner package. Then I went to Challenger with my uniform on so they thought I knew what I was doing. Haha. I was clueless but they kept me on. Great bloke there called Malcolm. Best radio operator in London. Unbelievable memory for streets etc. Yeah. Good times when you’re young and dumb. I can’t believe the weather we rode motorcycles in 5 days a week for 10 hr days. I’m back home in Sydney now since 1993.
I became a despatch rider out of financial reasons. Previously I worked as a Honda Mechanic at Mochecks in Clapham. Parallel to that I was motocrossing on the weekends until my bank manager reminded me of of the state of my account! So despatching balanced things out within 3months.
Changing the front brake lines would probably be a good thing. My experience is that the aviation grade lines are much more rigid and "waste" less fluid volume...
Nice roads! If you ever land yourself in WI, I can set you up with some riding buddy's that can take you on some fantastic roads within the southwest area.
Really liking the revival of the CX500 - I've become enchanted with perhaps a dual sport conversion myself. One note about disc brakes - your comment on the pad drag on the disc because of a small master cylinder piston is not quite correct. The piston seal in the caliper is what retracts the piston not the master cylinder.
I would have to disagree. There is of course a seal but when you use the master cylinder to pressurize the fluid in the caliper you force it out, when you let go of the lever the fluid goes back into the master and therefore the vacuum draws the piston back
Fair enough. If that would be the case then you would have to apply an equal force to disengage the brake. The vacuum as you mention draws the fluid in the sealed system a little but it’s usually the master cylinder return spring. Anyhow not intending to be “that guy”. Info is readily available out there. Love your builds and have already followed your CX500 DS video. One fellow here in PDX did one in the old Honda CR red and blue combo. Nice!
Hey BJ. Thanks for the video on one of my favourite bikes....How much do CX500 Customs generally sell for over there? They are pretty rare here in Australia and will get silly money.
You really exercised that machine! What was you top speed? What do you sense is the best cruising speed? How many miles on that engine when you started restoration? How many miles to sort it out?
I had it up to 80 and didn't feel the need to go faster. Between 55 and 70 is where it's best. This isn't a restoration but rather just mechanical servicing to make it safe and reliable. It took probably 50 miles to get the suspension and brakes where I liked them.
Thinking of buying one of these as my first bike ever! Would you say its an bike that is easy to control at lower speeds? And what is a comfortable cruising speed on this one?
I've never ridden a CX, but I do like twins. Is that speedo stock? By that I mean is 80-85 MPH really the expected top speed? They were the work horse of couriers back in the day, I knew a guy who rode from Leeds to London and back (200 miles each way) on his at least once a week. I can't imagine pushing the engine that hard to sit at 80 would have made it the default courier's work bike. Perhaps the American top speed was different to the UK top speed? Perhaps that was normal when the CX was produced and I've just been spoilt by only riding large capacity machines from about 1996 onwards. Regardless I reached the point about 10 years ago where my attitudes changed such that if I was able to go fast, I was on the wrong sort of road, and instead I went looking for roads where fast riding was either not possible or idiotic. On a different subject, those were some great looking roads. Also having led a lot of rides, I always stressed that whilst we were all there to enjoy the ride, safety was your responsibility, if there's a junction with a hill leading up to it, as you showed, it was each persons responsibility to determine when it was safe to proceed.
@jaidee9570 you can do 100 on these bikes. The engine will sit happy at 80 but the rider may not due to limited wind protection. My friend just did an iron butt in his last month
He's got the printed black T-shirt, with a skull no less. He's got the baseball cap, black no less, he's got the scraggly beard. There's something about a man in uniform.
@@BrickHouseBuilds there’s a very curvy and hilly road in northern NYS that I used to trailer my 83 Kaw CSR1000 on vacation just to ride that road! Rt. 58 from Pope Mills to Gouverneur (yes that’s spelled correctly!) local “tail of the dragon!” 18 miles of fun! I could feel the turns in your video! Thank you!

Looking at the roads you did, myself and my mate did little under 400 miles yesterday through some of quite possibly the most beautiful parts of Scotland you could imagine! Similar looking to what you did in this video, with the trees, mountains and superb views.
If… I mean WHEN!! You find yourself Scotland side, it would be a pleasure to share a few of the thousands of miles of great roads we do on the regular, and our whisky ain’t that bad either, if you’re a fan😜
Sorry about wee Ben❤️ No doubt he was an absolute legend!
I had the cx650e and it was awesome lol had air shocks very nice
Those 500 was sooo smooth
That they are!
@@SherKhan-b1kes Small world eh. My mates raced at Brands Hatch.
Great looking bike, should be a fun cruiser,/commuter👌
It's proving to be exactly that
it's like you answered me when I thought about the handle bars! 😅
😁
Great video. Keep up your great work and education presentation style. Another quick ? Are there any more vintage bike nights scheduled this year ?
Thank ya sir! The Defiance meet is done for the year but I'm not sure on the st louis one
Great ride for sure!
🤘🤘
Wow, at like 9:05 in the video you mension Missouri, I was born in New Madrid, MO.
Missouri proud! I actually am planning a ride down to madrid!
Changing the front brake lines would probably be a good thing. My experience is that the aviation grade lines are much more rigid and "waste" less fluid volume...
@yveslegrand9826 Yes that's always a good upgrade
Our pet are family so i know its hard to loose them. 😢Nice ride by The way
Thanks so much. Definitely hard to say the least
Nice roads! If you ever land yourself in WI, I can set you up with some riding buddy's that can take you on some fantastic roads within the southwest area.
🤘😎
Thats a good locking bike
It really shows well. I keep gettin compliments on it when I stop for fuel
Beauty

Really liking the revival of the CX500 - I've become enchanted with perhaps a dual sport conversion myself. One note about disc brakes - your comment on the pad drag on the disc because of a small master cylinder piston is not quite correct. The piston seal in the caliper is what retracts the piston not the master cylinder.
I would have to disagree. There is of course a seal but when you use the master cylinder to pressurize the fluid in the caliper you force it out, when you let go of the lever the fluid goes back into the master and therefore the vacuum draws the piston back
Also, I have a full adventure/dual sport cx500 build fully documented on here that I recently finished. It turned out great!
Nice!
A cool bike.
🤘🤘
Hey BJ. Thanks for the video on one of my favourite bikes....How much do CX500 Customs generally sell for over there? They are pretty rare here in Australia and will get silly money.
They are very cheap here. This bike would be lucky to bring $1500 on the very best day. They are extremely common and not sought after
Do you sell any of your builds? If so, what venue do you use. You do very interesting repairs and rebuilds. Thank you for your time.
This bike is currently for sale actually. I just rely on my social pages
This would be a great first bike but you have to expect to have to tinker and wrench on it a bit
200 miles a day? Just beginner on a CX! 500miles a day is sweet traveling on a CX!
Definitely capable of that!
Surprised a twin cylinder redlines @ 10,000 RPM .
These were pretty advanced engines for their time. They loved to rev and will sit at 9k all day
He's got the printed black T-shirt, with a skull no less. He's got the baseball cap, black no less, he's got the scraggly beard. There's something about a man in uniform.
🤣🤣
Ich vermisse die ❤❤❤😂
BJ, do you have a link to that Master Cylinder?

I'm a beginner rider. Would you recommend the cx500c?
@@socialbites9700 A cx500 would be a great beginner bike. If you can do some mechanical work for maintenance and such it would be a good option
It's days "at the office" like those that must make you regret your chosen career path....😜
It's a drag man I tell ya. My boss never gives me a day off
I thought the old tach looked kinda bouncy!
A bit
@@BrickHouseBuilds there’s a very curvy and hilly road in northern NYS that I used to trailer my 83 Kaw CSR1000 on vacation just to ride that road! Rt. 58 from Pope Mills to Gouverneur (yes that’s spelled correctly!) local “tail of the dragon!” 18 miles of fun! I could feel the turns in your video! Thank you!
Hello , could you give me a amazon link for the brake Master Cylinder you used please?

Thanks@@BrickHouseBuilds
The 500 was a Guzzi done better.
Great power plants
My sympathy for the loss of your dog.
I appreciate it 🙏
How can any sane person hate this bike ?
Oh boy you would be surprised. Any bike I share someone chimes in saying it's the worst thing ever built 🤣
@@BrickHouseBuilds Crazy !
Lol poot poot poot meet the jetsons ha ha
Lol I actually highlighted this comment and was about to put it into google translate 😅
@@BrickHouseBuilds I apologized for not making sense sometimes 😆. That exhaust sound had me rolling
@@TH-camcensoredmyusername All good dude I had a good laugh at it!
Sorry about your furry friend
I appreciate it 🙏
Sorry, the default action of using Amazon, is bad for Freedom and the world.
Nevermind the fact that all other parts were OEM Japan. Just fixate on the one Amazon part I used for testing.
I bought a new one in 1984. What a great little bike!!!
Fun for sure
is it raised in the front? or is my -82 perhaps in need of new springs
No this is factory. Your 82 has the air assist system which uses a few psi in the forks to act as preload. They bleed out and your forks sag
@@BrickHouseBuilds ah. The whole fork and spring business is a royal mess, found that out when I was measuring the fork springs. And I found my euro model has no air pre load type spring.
