Barb and I love our adventures traveling the United States for the last 4 1/2 years. Thanks for your service. Besides sightseeing people and restaurants we love I had a CB radio in my bedroom hooked to my car battery. Talking to the truckers on i-74. I couldn't imagine sharing our travels without Barb adventures keep you young and alive. Thanks for sharing

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a ride!'" Hunter S. Thompson...perhaps even on a Spyder, lol ...

For me, the why is, I move at my own speed, on my own planned route, and stop when I want. When you are flying, traveling by train, bus, etc., then you are at the whim of the transportation company. Driving/ riding, you do what you want when you want and you see all the bends too! edit: you were talking about wolfcreek pass. In 2017 about oct. a couple of friends and I who live in Ohio went to Colorado, and one day we decided to go to Pikes Peak. Well on the way up, we got rained on, hailed on and snowed on. when it was hailing I got afraid the slick roadways would be hard to manuver on my two wheeled motorcycle. but it finally stopped and we got to the top and then later came back down without any incidents. Makes for great storys but not fun in the process of doing it.

People ask why ride; the answer is why not? There are an unbelievable amount of interests, hobbies, etc. with riding just one of them. Being on a motorcycle changes my thought process too and I become reflective and feel closer to God. Being alone, being with people, checking out this world - the list is endless. I may not understand many other interests but my lack of understanding shouldn’t cause me to rain on anyone’s parade by challenging their choice. So good for you in doing what you want to do and sharing it with us. Best wishes with the planning and trip. We only live once.

Perhaps questions themsevles contain the answer to the questions... why do we like to travel when there are unexpected challenges? ... perhaps it's simply "because we like to travel, especially when we face and overcome unexpected challenges"... or why do we travel?... perhaps it's simply "because we can"!! 😁👍

John, my wife and I have been traveling on motorcycles for going on 47 years together. She has always ridden her own machine and is currently on a 2021 Sea to Sky. Not to blow our own horn but we have ridden in every state in the US including HI and AK. Hawaii was a rental. We have made all but a couple of Canadian Provinces and have ridden into Mexico. All this to say have you ever heard the song from "Paint Your Wagon" - Born Under a Wandering Star? I think that is why the wife and I have been traveling the country via motorcycles most of our adult lives. It is a gene that we both have. Some people are lucky enough to be born with this gene, as well, while others do not get the gene and thus cannot understand the deep desire to travel the open road, especially on a motorcycle. That little something inside of us that pushes us to go on the great adventure(s), follow the wind that calls to us. Enjoy life to its fullest. As we roll into our "senior years" the trips are getting shorter in duration for the wife and I but not shorter in adventure. I hope you enjoy your trip to the great north. It is a wonderful place to travel, with unbelievable scenery. We will be following along with you every video.

John, def enjoyed the insight. These days with work still being a commitment we have to pursue, the adventures are short term and fairly close to home. We look forward to the time when retirement brings unlimited opportunity to explore on a more wide range. We love all aspects of travel you mentioned, as well as the one Katy mentioned, the people. We have met so many nice people and we consider a lot, like yourselves as good friends. We look forward to the future adventures!

Reasons for traveling evolves over the years. I don't know how that happens, but it does. And I find that each travel can have its own particular reason, e.g. a family vacation or a honeymoon. Now that I am retired, the reasons why I love to travel are different: to discover (hence naming my Spyder Discovery), to enjoy (with all the flavors you mentioned), to change the scenery and the routine (yes, it helps to clear your mind!), to meet new people and even make new friends, to sometimes just get away and to be happy to come back home, and, finally, to become, hopefully, a better person because I believe you can always learn something when you travel. So, happy trails John and Miriam!

Enjoyed John's "pontification". Also the 'Air Force dream sheet story' and I can relate. Gave me reflection, at Navy boot camp I carefully completed 'dream sheet', for Navy air school and got a free trip to Korea on a destroyer, that trip lasted for almost four long years of 'cruising'. Trip to AK, maybe I missed a episode didn't know about that, sounds like an enjoyable challenge. That is gonna be a series of good You Tubes. Millie and I would like to take one more long ride next year, at 92, not sure it will happen, we shall see.

Like you John, I much prefer travel by car/spyder than commercial airliner. Flying a plane is great fun but I loathe the whole airline experience. Elvie does not mind air travel but I barely tolerate it. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s necessary.
While traveling by car/spyder there are many unplanned happy diversions ( a failed bank robbery by the Jessie James gang, Northfield, MN), landmarks (the geographical center of N. America, Rugby, ND) and oddities (Fairbanks Museum, St. Johnsbury, VT) just to name a few that were “Just around the bend” that you would never see at 35,000 ft. Yep, in my opinion traveling terra firma in a private vehicle is a great joy and it helps that I have Elvie as a great traveling companion.
