      I'd say clickies are alive and well. The mass market switches with click bars, click jackets etc. are all relatively new.
      This one is another beast tho and I'm looking forward to the feel in tactile especially (I like the clicky feel, but my colleagues don't. I hate linears).

    • @BrianMcKee
      @BrianMcKee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1.30 a switch isn't bad if it's comparable to clicky alps. Especially good if it's resistant to dirt and dust like a regular MX style switch. I do hope this catches on so we can see the other brands try this out.

    • @nonnegaard
      @nonnegaard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Steep for an MX switch, sure, but if you want good clickies, your options are slim. Space Invaders are nearly impossible to build customs with. Then there are Alps which have poor keycap options. That leaves SMK 2nd gen. which are impossible to come by these days. 1.30 for a fully MX compatible clicky is excellent.

    • @prokopf-9332
      @prokopf-9332 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nonnegaard Its still a bollocks amount of money for a switch. A kailh box is below 0,40 per switch. If you specificly want clickleaf cherry MX style and compare it to vintage offerings yes. The price is basically mostly about skimming willing buyers rather then actually basing the price more on what the switch cost in production i guess. No way this switch is actually 3 times as expensive to manufacture, even if you count in the heavy design work and lower volumes.

    • @nonnegaard
      @nonnegaard 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prokopf-9332 comparing them to box switches is dumb. i personally hate the tiny, thin sound that click bars make. I actually prefer click jackets. I like my clickies raspy and full bodied, and at the very least click jackets fulfill one of those criteria. Definitely also the most expensive mx switch to produce out there right now. Not only is it a brand new product that has taken far more effort to design than a jwk recolor, zeal is a premium brand that charges premium prices but guarantees an excellent product. diminishing returns definitely exists, but if you cant see why these switches cost what they do, youre just not the target audience.

  • @JimIBobIJones
    @JimIBobIJones 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Click jackets also have their advantages. The tactile bump and the click "sandwiches" the actuation - which ties the click and actuation parts of the mechanism.
    Badly calibrated switches that rely on a separate click mechanism (e.g. Kailh clickbars, which are set way too high up) often end up with switches that click regardless of whether you actuate them.

  • @fsLeg
    @fsLeg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @dylanpresidafonseca2545 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends what you want. It's definitely not for the brown fans, and without a force graph it's hard to compare to the clickbars. And obviously, as it isn't non contact, it's not going to be a fantastic linear. It's also more expensive than buying yellows, navy blues and royals

    Quite interesting, however at 1.50 USD a switch (currently 1.30) that's a really high price and its also really disappointing he's trying to patent the modular click leaf instead of open sourcing it.
    We didn't have all these variety of switches or more budget oriented mechanical keyboards until the cherry patent expired, if cherry renewed their patent we probably wouldn't have a lot of the switches we currently have.
    I know patents are supposed to protect your design from being stolen, but this feels more like Zeal is only trying to patent it so nobody else can make a lower priced modular click leaf mx based switch that out competes his design, sorta like how Asetek patented a CPU liquid cooler design that has stalled any innovation in that area because nobody can make a change to the design without violating their patent.

    • @Boyetto-san
      @Boyetto-san 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Zeal's MO has always been to corner the market for expensive premium parts. I appreciate that there's substance behind most of his products, but he basically thrives off of putting them behind an excessively big paywall to give them the air of exclusivity. It lets him cultivate a niche following of fanboys who're invested in finding their endgame in his products, and whom he often employed as attack dogs against criticism from the community. Just look at the moral outrage and high horses everyone were on when the Stealios controversy happened.
      Ultimately, JWK/Durocks became a staple in the community despite his efforts to nip them in the bud. That probably hit his ego hard, so now he's going for a patent. And we can be sure that he's going to lord that over the community for years with actual legal protection. Chinese factories can and will clone the design because most intellectual property laws mean shit in China. It's being able to sell it in places where American patents are enforced that'll be difficult.

    • @captaingary5650
      @captaingary5650 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Zealpc is honestly pretty scummy though. Incredibly overpriced for what you get. Any JWK can outdo many of their switches. Hell, even their stabs are overpriced and in general all of their products aren’t worth it. Really unfortunate because they do have some decent stuff. Will probably preorder a few of their new switches, but seeing how things are I might think otherwise

    The option to have a genuinely tactile switch that isn't clicky makes these super appealing for a keyboard that you bring to work or other situations where a clicky keyboard might be annoying to others. Judging from ZealPC's own force curves, at least as tactile if not more so. Like, a ~40 gram drop to Jade's ~30 grams. Alps SKCM Amber are pretty comparable to Box Jades, and that's the vintage switch these will most closely resemble. The main differences I'd expect are that (1) the pre-travel might be a bit less bunched up right before the tactile drop than in Box clickies, and (2) the post-travel will be more flat and less linear. But those are just guesses based on the force curves any my own experience with White/Orange Alps.

      Seeing as the clicker and actuation mechanism are separate components, the click will never sync up perfectly, the question remains how far apart they are. Tactility also plays a part in this, when typing on highly tactily clicky switches you will inevitably 'shoot past' the actuation when pressing a key normally. This is why you sometimes hear people complain about the actuation not being in sync with the click on MX Blues or BOX Whites, but never when discussing BOX Jades.

    So the click mechanism is independent of the contact leaf, just like how kailh's clickbars work? My expectations for the switch is very low then considering how kailh's clickbar switches have issues where you can get the click but not actuate or the other way around.

      Very few switches have inherent actuation alignment, I can think of less than 10 of them, and only one is in current production; buckling springs.

    Can I ask a possibly stupid question: are there any switches on the market right now where the click is actually and completely coincidental to the switch actuation? Basic toggle switches do this. Buckling spring do this. But I feel like these current keyboard switches, you could get clicks without actuations, or actuations without clicks. Rarely, mind you, and only when worn or dirty, but it's still extremely dissatisfying.

      Thanks for the response. I know you will give your opinion in the review, so I understand if you decide to withhold answering this, but what do you think of the 100g variant? That seems really heavy to me, but maybe the tactility is so sharp, fast, and extreme that it isn't that bad in practice.
      Like, how would you say it compares to a Unicomp model M for example in terms of stiffness?
      Again, I understand if you don't want to answer that now.

    • @Chyrosran22
      @Chyrosran22  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@copper4eva Choice of different spring weightings aren't a particularly interesting point of discussion IMO. 100 g is too stiff for me, but perfect for people who like 100 g weightings. That's really about as much as can be said about that xD .
