    DevOps automation and Sysadmins skills are essential to most roles today as there is so much overlap. Everything in the cloud is a combination of Sysadmins tasks and automation. You have to know Linux, Powershell, Python, Bash Scripting, Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, Packer, Kubernetes, VMs and Docker Containers. I had one co-worker tell me that he hates programming. Well i told him, unfortunately you can't run away from that since everything is all about automation these days. You are expected to have some Scripting knowledge no matter if its networking, Security, Databases, Cloud or server's.

    Networking is not dead and won't be because connectivity is always needed be it Cloud or on-prem. However, Networking is no longer influential except you're working with an ISP. Network analysts in enterprises are just at the background while the other IT roles such as security, data science, and cloud are prominent because they provide more visible projects that senior execs see and appreciate.
    Gone are the days when routing, switching, and wireless technologies were evolving from slow technologies. No one is using modems and not many enterprises have big enough datacenters to deploy spine/leaf technology.
    So in a nutshell, if you're comfortable being in the background and dealing with sometimes annoying support tickets that may not even have anything to do with network fault, then go for it. But if you want more visibility and value, and have more projects to work on, then avoid networking, as it's treated as mundane.
    You don't have to be in networking to understand basic routing and switching of packets.

    On site networking and servers are most definitely needed at production facilities for machine networks and data. You can't risk the cloud servers and networks not connecting because your circuits are down.

    I would say networking isnt going away buuuutttt I dont think most companies are or will be looking for “A network Engineer” They looking for Sys admins/Net Devops.
    When I was coming up you had your Network Team and your Server sys Admin team and your Security Team….now they just want one team to do it all..
    Like you said the industry is looking at networking as a basic skill that IT workers should have. Unless youre working at thr enterprise level its going to get difficult to find a job ad just a Network guyz

    • @salt473
      @salt473 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Depends on the role and the company. In a lot of bigger companies, you might be in a role where you just route/switch and have little access to anything else. You might be just a design guy and not have anything to do with operations, etc.
      In other companies you might be on a team of 3 where you're wearing every hat imaginable. It just depends.

    • @salt473
      @salt473 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cj7334 I don't have a great answer for that. The reason I know this is I'm a consultant for a major vendor, so I get to work with a variety of different shops. Typically, the bigger the company, the more restriction an individual will have.
      For example, to do something simple like "deploy an ubuntu server in the data center" might take a whole month in some companies. because it has to pass through a security guy, a data center guy, get some other approval, etc.
      But in other companies, its just one dude who has hands on everything and can get it done in 20 minutes.

  • @timb2752

    Internet is just a shorthand for the internetwork. The internet is, in short, a network of networks. And the cloud? It’s not something that just magically hosts all your services, it’s a data center, composed of servers, switches, routers, the whole lot of it. Whether you directly or indirectly work on it, your going to be networking regardless. Not to mention ISPs and the sheer amount of routing going on within their backbone for shit to get where it needs to be.
