But what people call “the twirling” is actually another part of the inspection. It represents their mastery and discipline at handling the rifle and how synchronized the officer is with his platoon.

At least they remove the bayonet before spinning the rifle because the tomb guards do not and one was stabbed in the foot not too long ago.
