I am always so moved by the reverence shown for the unknowns by these Army elite guards at Arlington. Everyone should go and visit the tomb of the unknowns and pay tribute to the fallen. You won't forget the experience.

That's the effect we are going for. We actually had a PHD Student in Psychology from Georgetown U come down and watch us for a week. His conclusions were: When the sentinel was slow, smooth, and graceful it had a hypnotic, solemn effect on the crowd. People tended to be quiet, respectful and well mannered. When the Sentinel was fast, and choppy in their movements, the crowd tended to mill around a lot, were more noisy, and did not pay as much attention to the Sentinel, or the ceremony. So we took those findings and applied them and confirmed his results...at least us on 3rd Relief.

I’m ex-army, these soldiers definitely deserve all the respect they get, I respect they’re dedication and perfection in honor for the soldiers that came before me. So I’m truly mean no disrespect to the guards or the soldiers in the tomb. I know being an army vet that the military is full of pomp and circumstance, so how much of the inspection is actually just for show?
Yes, everyone is qualified. There is nothing for show about the inspection. The inspection block is the real thing. While rare, there have been times that someone is sent down for failing (either with the weapon or uniform).
No, the literal first step to racking the bolt to see if its unloaded, and then its racked again to inspect dirt, and at the end of the shift the bolt is racked and gun is dry fired. Not Shure the protocol if someone doesn't Lisen to their commands, maybe a regular police officer or security guard will physically deal with the situation
Sentinel has really good posture here, Relief Commander needs a little practice on his weapons inspection to make it smoother and more graceful, he should be standing a little closer to the Sentinel, should probably make the heel clicks a little less dramatic. But overall pretty good!

There's a video about how the relief NCO accidentlt drop the weapon and the blade stab the feet of the sentinel. The sentinel carry on the march while bleeding until 2/3 of the way in and had to get relief since he bled too much.
