The worst weekend of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes F1 career explained

  • Saudi Arabia 2022 was Lewis Hamilton's worst weekend in 180 races for Mercedes since joining the team in 2013.
Of course, Hamilton has had worse results in both qualifying and races for Mercedes - but these were the consequences of mechanical problems or crashes. In Saudi Arabia, it was all on merit with the bare numbers stating he started 15th and finished 10th.
So what went wrong for Hamilton, how much was down to bad luck, and what does it reveal about the prospects for Mercedes for the rest of 2022?

Considering that we have had Ferrari in the midfield for 2 years, I think that this was already the case. I was really hoping that we would have more teams fighting for wins and it looks like it's just 2 again. After Barcelona I had hope that McLaren would be close to the leaders and able to punish any mistakes. That is not happening. While the new regulations worked as far as overtaking goes, we again have a 2 teams race for the title. I hope Ferrari and Red Bull don't find much speed until end of the years and the others manage to catch up, but I doubt that will happen.

@@AlexBarbu I must disagree, the 2022 Merc is a bad car, even Russell has stated as such. The porpoising makes the car undriveable, doesn't matter who is behind the wheel, if the wheels don't contact the ground, you have not speed, doesn't matter how powerful the engine is. It is a aerodynamics issue, that will eventually be solved, but the question is when. Part of the problem is the cost cap, Mercedes can just throw money as solving it, so it kind of makes it that much harder. The issue isn't really limited to Mercedes, even the ferrari has some porpoising down the straights, hence less straight line speed than Red Bull.

The car makes more difference than the driver. The reason is simply that the gap in car capabilities is greater than the gap between the drivers' abilities at the top. They are all extremely good. Give one a few extra HP or a little more downforce, and he will make use of it. E.g. If Alonso and Hamilton swapped cars for the past 10 years, their results would be close to inverse. So when we compare drivers, we have to look at the little details that they do well, and unfortunately that's hard to see when their cars are not evenly matched. But advanced data would show who has the best throttle control, steering, least amount of coasting, etc.

Drivers always have prerogative on choosing set ups and he admitted it was his decision. Russell picked the better setup. It's Hamilton's fault and not being in the number 1 car or even number 2 car for the first time in 8 years is showing his shortcomings very starkly. He could've happily gone with Russell's set up if he wanted, or a slightly modified version of it.
So yeah, their cars aren't identical. But that's only because of Hamilton's own skill and decisions. The cars and 'side of the garage' have absolutely nothing to do with it.
And Mercedes is smokescreening by complaining it's all porpoising. Did you watch the race? Look at a Ferrari at all? They're absolutely the fastest cars on the track so far, and they have heaps of porpoising. Porpoising isn't the only issue.

I'm sure they'll get on top of things in due course and I'd imagine other circuits will be more suited to the car. The only challenge will be the fact that Red Bull and Ferrari will also be bringing regular upgrades so the gap will be hard to close quickly, especially if the Mercedes engine lacks power this year. Could this be his first season where he doesn't win a race?

And to develope something new its not easy task. They has been given short time to developed. That why some engine manufacturer throw a season to developed for new regulation. Merc engine is perfected for old season. Everybody cant deny it, their car is just so fast even verstappen hardly have chance to catch them. But for this season their engine is like a baby. Ferrari maybe already developed much before and start testing now. But merc probably just start to developed after last season finish. But it show how bad merc right now. RB should be respected tho, they focusing so much on last season and beat merc at their peak. Even though its controversial winning but still win is a win. And now they still performing in this season even on last race their car has major breakdown but they come as one of the top on the 2nd. It show how good their developement team is. The problem is that the aero issues which affect porpoising aren’t something that can be detected in the wind tunnels, so nobody really knew how their cars were perform until the first test days, at which time we saw various teams were affected the different levels. Now they have to figure out how to fix it, but when you have to make changes to the fundamental aerodynamics of the car, you then have to go and tweak a number of other things (McLaren likewise - they had to address the brake cooling issue, and once they did that, started to have an issue with porpoising, etc). Getting everything tweaked so that it’s all in balance once again takes time - and Mercedes has the lowest allotment of wind tunnel testing time.

They were right to continue on with the intention of pitting when he was originally due to (which was coincidentally the same lap as their VSC confusion). Without the VSC he would have come out a solid 9th and on fresh Mediums to take it to a collection of cars on hard tyres. He’d likely have finished 7th. If you add the fact he narrowly missed out on pitting under the VSC, it would have allowed him to come out a comfortable 8th, given him an extra lap to close up and likely chase Ocon down for 6th as his speed, though not great, was sufficient.

Look at where Leclerc was last year, look at where he is so far this year, and yet people still say "I think its the car" no shit its the car. Leclerc, Verstappen, Hamilton are all incredible drivers, but without a car they wouldn't be anything. Just like a football team wouldnt be good without a good quarterback.

Yeah, Lewis is the only driver on the grid who has never driven a car worse then 3rd in the constructors. This year may finally change that. I think everyone else who has a season has spent at least one season in a car that has been at least sixth or worse.
It's always been one of my bigger issues I have when people talk about his records. Like of course he did? Given how things fell into place for him it'd have been disappointing if he didn't. Granted you need talent too, but being in the right car at the right time makes up so much of this sport. Also I'm pretty sure he had inside information about McLaren's decline and/or Mercedes rise. That move didn't entirely come out of nowhere considering how well it worked out for him and even if he didn't know, that makes it more luck then skill as well.

I want to feel bad for Hamilton, but its hard to feel bad for someone that had the best car on the grid for 8 seasons in a row. Its high time for a change, otherwise F1 will slowly lose popularity once again despite Liberty Media's huge spending on marketing budget. It was the same with Schumacher in the early 2000s as well.
At the end of the day, I feel like F1 will eventually move to a spec-car type racing in the furture. Because clearly, budget cap and limited wind-tunnel time is not shaking up the pecking order enough.

@@kuyt20 I said they'll probably always gravitate to the top.
McLaren are historically big. But they aren't a current big team. Their budgets between 2016-2020 were routinely between $100-250M less per season than the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull. To the tune of 1/2, maybe 2/3 of the budget. They are a customer team now.
Last time they spent big money was 2015 and they nearly collapsed around that period I think. I remember Zak talking about taking another time about securing funding for the future of the company.

They have already admitted that the opening races of the season are effectively test sessions for the team. Therefore I think George was given something to try last weekend and ended up 9th in qualifying, Lewis was given something different to try this weekend and paid a heavier price in qualifying (and consequently the race). I don't think Mercedes expected it to result in being eliminated in Q1, but over the two weekends they have now gathered 4 different sets of data to better understand the car issues. If they had just run standard race setups they would have gathered half the data points available to them which won't help them solve the car's fundamental problem. However, if their gamble across the opening races pays off, they will unlock the potential they say is in the car and suddenly the Mercedes will bounce to the front of the grid and start winning races. Right now, they probably have nothing to loose - assuming that George and Lewis continue to trust the team's methodology.

I must have watched a different race to most of the other people commenting on here. After the qualy issues with setup that left him in 16th (15th), Lewis raced the wheels off the car and made quite comfortable work of passing those in front. The first safety car wrecked his strategy despite it initially bumping him up to 6th - a position he was well on course to make with his pace on the hards without it. Then he was comfortably matching lap times with Russell despite much older tyres.
Mercedes ballsed it up again by not bringing him in as soon as they saw Alonso then Danny Ricc trundling towards to the pitlane, undoing all of Hamilton's good work. Their strategy team has been found wanting before and I'm really starting to think that James Vowles is very overrated. Also, their pit-stops were amongst the slowest again. In so many areas do Mercedes need to up their game, but the driver in car 44 isn't one of them.
