    Stayed at my sisters house in Gaithersburg last year July-October right off of Watkins Mill Road. I-270 has literally became one of my favorite stretches of interstate in the USA, I was up and down 270 everyday doing Instacart

      It’s a really nice highway when traffic is absent but during peak travel times and rush hour, you may think otherwise

    Mike, thanks for the nice video down memory lane for me. I haven't been home to Frederick in many years. Probably drove that stretch of road thousands of times. Surprising that they still haven't widened I270 in Frederick Co. I loved hearing the bump going across the Monocacy Bridge.

    Originally designated as I-70S; only the small section between the I-270 spur and the Washington Circumferetial Highway (yeah, the Beltway) had a 270 designation. I-70N went from Frederick to it's aborted end in Baltimore. I avoided the Beltway by taking I-81 south from Frederick to I-66 and into DC (more correctly, Fairfax County).

    I've really been looking forward to you doing this (despite it not really being the whole 270). You are welcome to drop back down on it if you want (back towards WSH).

    Keep in mind, folks, that I-270 was to go far beyond I-495/Capital Beltway. Originally it was planned to end at a massive interchange with I-95 in DC just north of Union Station. Long story short, if both I-95 and I-270 were brought into DC, I-495 wouldn’t be the gridlocked hotspot we all know and love.

      That's simply not in the cards any more. Either many billions would be required to tunnel the freeway (and then bring the exit/entrance ramps to street level), or a number of partial neighborhoods would need to be knocked down, costing tax revenue and reducing housing supply.
      That said, money does need to go into improving the freeway situation. On the Beltway, the American Legion up to near the 270 split needs to be widened to eliminate a bottleneck, and several of its interchanges (Rockville Pike, Georgia Ave, New Hampshire Ave, Baltimore Ave, and BW Parkway) could use improvements. Rockville Pike has the dreaded left lane entrance onto the inner loop that should instead be a right lane that transitions into the exit for Connecticut Ave. Georgia Ave actually will be getting an upgrade in a few years. New Hampshire could use a ramp flyover exit on the outer loop to eliminate the bad merge between southbound exit traffic and westbound entrance traffic. Baltimore Ave could use a designated right lane entrance onto the inner loop that transitions into the exit for Greenbelt Metro. And the BW Parkway cloverleaf interchange should be another type of shape with better merging.
      Congestion itself is of course a major factor for traffic jams, but it's pretty incredible how poor merging contributes to the problem. Those points can force stoppages even with relatively light traffic, and they cause a higher rate of accidents, which themselves cause traffic backups.

      NIMBYs and Urbanists put an end to that in the 70's. I-95 was to be what's now I-395 coming out of Virginia and through the District. There are a couple of Park and Rides near the interchange in College Park that were to be the other end of 95 heading north.

    This is not the I-270 I experience. Every weekday morning is gridlock southbound and evening gridlock northbound. The road should be six lanes to Frederick and I-70 should be six lanes to I-81 in Hagerstown.
    The "progressives" who control Montgomery County will never allow that to happen. They all live in Takoma Park so the traffic has no impact on them whatsoever.

      Sundays are bad southbound with the people returning from the mountains

      I agree. 6 lanes would do wonders.

    • @DAK4Blizzard
      @DAK4Blizzard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Any freeway in a metro area should be at least 3 lanes each way. Doing that can actually prevent certain other freeways and highways from being built. New Jersey is a good example: too many freeways and highways at least partly because there's not enough lanes per freeway/highway.
