Don't feel too bad- Layne is a sleeper. It takes most people a little longer to realize what an absolute genius Layne is, mostly because Geoff's there shaking the earth, while Eli and Earl soar up in the stratosphere and J. is smoother than smooth and right up in your ears with his runs. There's an old saying about sound engineers that goes something along the lines of you never notice the good ones, because you only pay attention to their work if something has gone wrong; I think to some extent, this can apply to vocal percussion. Your brain is telling you it's an actual drumkit, which isn't all that interesting while all the other vocal acrobatics are happening. It's only when you acknowledge that the drums were just another vocal line that it becomes astounding, and that can require conscious effort. But Layne also just doesn't seem to put himself forward quite as much; he seems to be content to be a deeply mischievous and powerfully creative force in the group. But maybe don't ever discount him- he's got a few more talents you've yet to see.
You saw Layne play violin in Nothing Else Matters. J. None is a member here and also plays violin. Earl left the group in 2020. J left to join the Navy in 2021 and comes back as a featured singer.
Sebs has done 1 or 2 of VPs Halloween stuff , but Sebs needs to react to This is Halloween, Oogey Boogey I think Sebs has done, but also \Geoffs Monster Mash, Headless Horseman, Monster Mash and Geoffs, Ghostriders in the Sky plus many others. Chances both VP and Geoff will have releases around Halloween
Thanks for this reaction. It’s really refreshing to see someone who knows about music, and sees just how amazing each one of these guys are. BTW, Eli does the lighting for most of their videos as well. And you’re right about Layne’s sense of humor, from everything I see.
Layne is definitely a sleeper. He often hangs back when the whole group is doing a chat, but lets his personality show when he’s the only one there. I can’t even get mad when he picks on me on Zoom, because he’s so funny and charming. By the way, he and his Pattycake Productions partner Tony also produce videos on their own channel. With Halloween coming up, I’d suggest Bump In The Night. A larger scale project during Covid, it has a little dialogue at the beginning and end, an original song, costumes by Tony, and even a dance break. All performed by many of your favorite Halloween characters. (And the commercial at the end - it was a VERY expensive video - was written and filmed by them and just as funny as the rest of the video.)
Hey little brother, you are in for a treat during the upcoming Halloween and Christmas seasons with Voiceplay. :) Love your reactions, and feel like you are family already
Layne is simply amazing and he does seem like a truly down to earth, cool guy. They all are. Bonus chats with Layne are always fun. Fav part of this video, the violins! And the look between Geoff and Layne at one point and the rabbit hole it led me down. lol Thanks for the reaction!
Outstanding reaction!! Love it that you dive deep into their backgrounds and absolutely love it that you zeroed in on Layne and his many talents. You actually saw Layne on the violin (hence "VioLayne") on your first VoicePlay reaction of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters and you made the comment you were wondering what they would do with James Hetfield's solo just before he nailed the violin solo. Layne also did the arrangement on Valhalla Calling. Looking forward to your reaction to Seven Nation Army which really shows off Layne's vocal percussion and also features Anthony Gargiula (Gar Jewela - You had it right on your reaction to Creep). Another great reaction.!! Looking forward to your next one.
A couple of interesting notes. This was an active warehouse with machinery running constantly. Since they pre-record the vocals it didn't affect the music but was a major distraction. Layne is a master violinist and has been playing since he was 4. J None plays violin but was out of practice and had not been at Layne's level of expertise. When Layne asked him to do it, he was terrified because he didn't think he could learn that much. Layne says, that's not how we do it, you only have to play the parts that are on camera. So it worked out. Like much of their music, I had never heard this song (I'm old). This was outstanding!! I'd suggest Drunken Sailor for your next reaction, it is completely different than what you've seen from them because it is as funny as all get out! Also, I love Utah. I visited frequently when I was younger and my daughter graduated from BYU.
Layne has been classically trained on the violin. This is a great video and the first of the apocalyptic trilogy, next is Dream On (Aerosmith) and I think you've done Seven Nation Army already. If not it is the 3rd. I enjoy your amazement with VoicePlay and all that they do. It's like taking someone to the Grand Canyon who has never seen it before and you get to enjoy that first glimpse again. Thanks Sebs. With Halloween around the corner, try In the Hall of the Mountain King (Edvard Grieg, 1875), it has no lyrics, but it does have trolls, and a cauldron that they throw things in that changes the style of the music, the tempo, and is filled with pranks and an amazing joy to watch. I think that VoicePlay deserved an award for this. You've now seen why Layne is called VioLayne, with In the Hall of the Mountain King, you'll see him as the Carrot Lord - this one goes back much earlier and he loves to torture the group with the carrots but J None can't believe Layne keeps pestering him with them. Like having a little kid around you all the time. My first Geoff solo was 2 yrs ago and he did Monster Mash, then I found Hoist the Colours, and the list of over 800 videos. I love VoicePlay.
VoicePlay is in league of their own now. I don't think anyone can compare to the videos they arrange and create. This is an older one, as both Earl and J.None are no longer members of VoicePlay. Earl left in 2020 for personal reasons, having been one of the original members, and J.None left in 2021 to sing with the US Navy music section. J does return to sing with them when on leave however. Layne is a clown to be honest. A joker. And in his arrangements he pushes the others to their limits. If they complain he just says "Do it". :)
I suggest that you listen to their cover of In My Room, if you haven't already. They declared that this song spoke to them as they all have a space- a room- in their home where they all could be creative, try out their musical ideas and be themselves in. Layne filled the studio they filmed that video, which is in his home, with things that were meaningful to them all. The YT plaquet for the group, piano for Geoff, Layne's violin, gaming figures for Cesar and Eli and Hamilton notes for DeJay etc. Every object in the setting has a significance. If you haven't heard them sing that, you're in for a treat.
@@huldradraco I meant together all in the same room. I have a studio, but I couldn't fit 6 guys and a camera crew in there. (not to mention I thankfully don't have groupies trying to find out what my next project is lurking around)
@@Treasacello ah, in that case they would use either Layne's studio, as it is a professional studio with room for several people, but more often they use Pattycake for that. They really only rehearse together if it's for a live show though, otherwise they just practice and record at their own homes.
Still one of my favorites to this day and I’ve been listening to them for years! Dream On and Seven Nation Army are the other two songs in their post-apocalyptic trilogy. Both are fantastic!
Layne also sings like an angel.... Listen to True Colors (another of Layne's arrangements) We're coming up to Halloween season, and VoicePlay are the KINGS of Halloween - and Layne goes wild, arranges most of them. Love his sense of humor. You nailed another detail when you said it's art and they're all in: Layne actually said something similar to that in an interview with Elizabeth at Charismatic Voice, he said he looks at each of their performances as an art piece. It shows.
Layne the beatboxer is the one you see playing the violin 99%of the time. He has been playing the violin since he was a child. J.None also plays as well but not as accomplished as Layne. J. None also has his own channel.
Try some music by YES one of the greatest progressive rock groups of all time. You haven't reacted to them at all. Some good ones include "Roundabout", "Close to the Edge", "The Gates of Delirium". "Awaken", "Turn of the Century"... Loads of good ones.

Vicariously relive the moments. That is profoundly true.
Layne also owns Paddycake Studio's where a lot of these videos are produced.
You should watch Seven Nation Army! Their cover is amazing!!
Great reaction!

Each and every one of them are insanely mind-blowingly talented. It's wild.
First time hearing Voiceplay...omg, so awesome. Thank you🎉
🎶🎧💭
I can't wait until you do Seven Nation Army!! That's my favorite of theirs so far
🤓😁🤓😁🤓
This is one of my absolute favorites because it's powerful and everyone shines. And I still miss Earl's laser tenor.
Amazing reaction to an incredible group
😂💭
The first time I ever saw this line-up of Voiceplay, I thought that was Maynard as well😂

Everything Voiceplay does is golden! If you love Imagine Dragons, check out their cover of "Enemy". It is amazing! And Layne is an absolute genius!

So good I watched it twice. I enjoy the heck out of your VoicePlay reactions in general but this is one of my favorite songs and I loved it!
Thank you for more Voiceplay!! Would love to hear even more. They are incredibly talented. Layne deserves every accolade bestowed! 🎤
This is one of my favorites from VoicePlay! They also covered Enemy from Imagine Dragons ❤

Tenor 1 is higher than tenor 2. The same with alto 1 and 2, and soprano 1 and 2 ... 1 is higher.
