The best kind of poetic irony is that, (most of) the town, ignored, shunned and made Kya so invisible, that in the end, that's how she gets away with murder, By not getting caught, sneaking home unnoticed, killing a man and leaving without anyone paying any attention to her.

I loved the book, but this adaptation is also great.
In the book, Tate did return once and observed Kya from a distance, realizing she wouldn't be able to adjust to living anywhere else. He quietly left like a coward and didn't come back til he realized he only wanted Kya.
Chase only ever saw Kya as a possession. She was an escape from mundane life for him, hence his weird obsession with her. Her killing him wasn't revenge for violating her, it was her following the laws of nature/survival. Chase was always going to be a threat to her, so she did what she thought she had to in order to be safe.
Tate keeping her secret at the end by tossing the shell necklace back into the water was a nice way to end their love story.

I always assumed it was multiple things. Kya wouldn't have really had any sex education. There's the fear of pregnancy, yes, but also just that sex can be very painful for women. Add on the fact that she was so emotionally vulnerable due to him, Jumpin' and Mabel being her only source of human contact and all the abuse and abandonment she endured, he was probably having constant worries that he was taking advantage of her in some way.

The book had a longer sequence where Kya felt unsafe in her own home because of Chase, and comparing that to how her mother had felt the same way because of her husband. The motivation to stand up and take matters into her own hands was there for Kya. The mystery was written really well though - I was sure it had been Jumpin' who did it since he knew what Chase was doing to Kya and that she would have an alibi out of town. But all great mysteries need some misdirects! 😉
Another great mystery drama is Mystic River with Sean Penn! It would make for a great reaction.

I love this story so much. I prefer the movie to the book which is rare. The movie was close to the book they didn’t change a lot. It was all the good parts of the book in a more concise story. The book was a little of a slow read bc of all the lengthy descriptions of the marsh.

The book explains how the dad was a war very who received a medal, but he really hid while his fellow soldiers were all killed, so he felt ashamed as only he knew the truth
He beat the mom and kids which is why she and the older ones left
The book also explains how the mom “woke up” after leaving and realized she’d left her kids so she wrote to him trying to get them back but he wouldn’t allow her to.
So the book gives better background into why the dad is super crappy.
She also didn’t have as tight of a relationship with jumpin and his wife as the movie portrays. But I did like that change for the movie myself

    *
    *
    *
    Luring him was as easy
    As flashing valentines.
    But like a lady firefly
They hid a secret call to die.
    A final touch,
    Unfinished;
    The last step, a trap.
    Down, down he falls,
    His eyes still holding mine
    Until they see another world.
    I saw them change.
    First a question,
    Then an answer,
    Finally an end.
    And love itself passing
To whatever it was before it began. - A.H. (Kya's pen name in the book)

Book was better in some ways, but this movie is solid adaptation.Tate helping Kya with everything since childhood, he started to teach her reads and writes at primary school, he even brings her brochure about menstruation cykle (it was a little bit akward scene from book, but he really trying to explained to her, it ends by the two of them just go to Mabel and she explaned it better). The lawer in the book never really met Kya before the trial, he simply just dont like prejudice, so the scene where he was nice to her when she was child is just a movie scene. And there was also saleswoman and social worker who helpes somehow Kya. Mabel and Jumpin was nice to her also, they basically raise her. Saleswoman in the town secretly give Kya many times small coins (Kya cant count as the child and father always send her to the town shop, so saleswoman giving her money "back" for many years) and also testified in her favor. Social worker was the one who told her about the school, she tried to take her away from her abusive fater but Kya always run away and when Kya wins the trial she was relieved and said "so you managed to escape again as always". In the book there is many scene from the trial that didnt show in the movie, it makes kind off more clear that Kya killed him, but they actually doesnt have any proof, you just as the reader can see hints, but for the police there really weren't any, just superstitions.

The movie made Chase worse than he was in the book.
Don't get me wrong, he wasn't a nice guy in the book, but you got were he was coming from, evan thought you didn't agree with him.
It made sense that Kya liked him, because he was no more than a stuck up rich boy who was to full of him self, but not as straight up evil as he came across in the movie.
It doesn't make sense in the movie, not evan for someone like her, whos craving intimicy, to like him, because he's such an a-h.

Thanks, Bryce! Thanks, Rob! Thanks, Zuff! 🦞 Always good to see Ms. Edgar-Jones. Olivia Newman directed this. Since Rob mentioned Harris Dickinson... be sure to check him out in BEACH RATS (2017), TRUST (2018) and TRIANGLE OF SADNESS (2022).
