At the beginning you claim that projective identification is a term used by Freud. This is not the case. It was actually a concept developed by Melanie Klein and was an extension of Freud's more basic concept of projection.
That was insightful...thank you! I have my clin. masters selection coming up next week and this made me feel so at ease knowing that I've done as much as I can at this point in my life, by way of my own therapy, to present an honest and "raw" appraisal of who I am. What a lovely feeling!
I know this is an old video! But this was super helpful! It’s something that’s come up for me recently. It took a while to identify in supervision. I know what I need to bring to therapy next week!
A very general answer to your question is that psychiatric drugs tend to ‘ blunt’ the more extreme end of psychological pain and provide a day to day coping mechanism, they generally are fast acting but can have side effects Therapy, is about trying to get to the root of why someone feels psychological pain and helps equip them to make changes in their lives to help them self cope or become more accepting of their difficulties.
can counselling be applied to all psychological problems ? i developed an ocd habit . i have been on antidepressants for 8 years and wonder if counselling might help?i would like to say, it is a lot less intrussive , but has not gone completely. { more like pure o}
Hi, thanks for the video. I'm interested in the theory of projective identification. I wonder about the dangers of the therapist using this as a defence mechanism. You did mention this in the video. I think what i would take from this is the importance of therapists actively reflecting on their own thoughts and feelings : and 'owning' them. I was also struck by the term 'synchronicity' you used towards the end. How would you explain the mechanics of this phenomena ?
Hi Guys, nice talk and liked your conversational style. However you don't actually address Projective Identification and as you'll see from the comments a number of people have noticed this. I think you give a very good talk and example of projection and counter-transference. E.g. the therapist who begins to deflect intellectually with the depressed client. This is NOT projective identification. P.I is when the projection activates the recipient in such a way as to impact how they feel and act as to confirm the projector's suspicions that the feeling was never theirs in the first place. There tends to be an accusatory and hostile nature to these projections and a key characteristic is the unconscious coercive element. The splitting in projective identification is very powerful and is somewhat intended to activate the recipient. You don't address this in the talk. But have have inspired me to do my own video! I'm a gestalt psychotherapist BTW But lots to like in your talk! Cheers
Thank you for your videos. I've been charmed by your enthusiasm and dedication to your profession! The videos are very helpful in studying counselling skills! I'm a little confused though: is transference and projection one and the same thing?
Transference is where you overlay feelings from a past relationship or event into the present .Ie you remind my of my father. Projection is a defense mechanism in which individuals attribute behaviors they find unacceptable in themselves. such as someone sat in a bar who has had quite a few drinks, accusing someone of being drunk.
When I think of catharsis I think of an evil american cult. I'm a client of a Transactional Analyst so it's quite cool to know about the things he's learned that he uses to help me. Please can you maybe do a video on psychiatric drugs? I've just been prescribed Seroquel and Diazapam and I don't know what I should do about it. How does medication and therapy work together? Thank you!!
Does this also explain why a person has a lot of bad romantic relationships? A person who has a bad relationship projects it onto every subsequent relationship unconsciously making the partner act like the previous bad relationship. Could this also be multiplied as the feelings projected get stronger. Women who think all men are the same, for instance, or being a magnet to bad relationships.
Mark West Absolutely! This shows a person with bad romantic relationships has unresolved childhood wounds like being emotionally neglected and unconsciouslly provokes the other side to respond in a way they only know which is disfunctional. The good thing is we need this 'dramas' to heal the old wounds by first noticing what's been done, accepting the pain, learning to reparent themselves (inner child) and finally love. Love is acceptance of both our traits: positive and negative.Then the love expands and a healthy relationship can be created.
I’m trying to figure out which one of you is counselor and which is the patient. Joking my good men. My wife is bpd. I should say X wife. Anyway gentlemen She did what you are saying to me. You could not convince her she did this Even if you gave her $1 billion duo agree. Yes try to explain This to family as why you got divorced. Then you are labeled as crazy because you will be damaged and this is so complicated. Mine would never get help.

Absolutely, I'd also posit that it's often heavily influenced by their attachment style (e.g anxious attachment/secure attachment etc)
If I remember correctly I did ask but he did not want one ....!

These two are so boring 🙈 I do not want to be their client!
Bless you, Mimi, this video is for higher education, not preschool students :)
