When Jo kwon said that “luckily you don’t have to wear these heels for the challenge”. Woongki and seowon were the only ones who said “but i really want to”. I love these boys❤️

"a person doesn't have to be out to be gay" OK GO OFF
I'm so tired of the "don't assume they're gay" argument bc it's rooted in so much homophobia.
The little rainbow flower pin on sung hanbin's blazer during the Say My Name performance made me smile and I'm not about to let someone invalidate that.

i'm actually openly weeping at adam's little speech. you're so right - it's the painful implication that we're doing something wrong by even just recognising each other out in the world. and it's so lovely that (yes god, of all things, MNET's own) boys planet gives us even glimpses of the spectrum of all ways we are. also the "gay even if you don't come out" - i will be crying about this for a week thank u!!

Exactly! And honestly there's no way I would watch this show if, like, 1 in 3 of the boys weren't queer! The LGBT boys are carrying the show, and honestly they deserve recognition. We'll see what lineup MNET chooses at the end, but this could end up being the gayest boy group ever, and I for one hope for and welcome that possibility! I'd love a group composed half (or more, even) of queer or at least queer presenting members. When y'all point out which contestants are a lil fruity, it helps me understand who I ought to be rooting for. I want more artists like Sunoo of Enhyphen and Jimin of BTS in KPop, not fewer. The critics are missing the point. Queer representation is a good thing, and we have nothing but positivity and support for these trainees. They're all so talented.

@@zackwilson8701 And I think falling into the argument of "if it looks gay it won't do numbers"... the people who are hiding behind this as having "good intention" are just embracing the homophobic consensus and the same rhetoric that we have been sticking by for way too long. And be real, when things are called explicitly queer like by lowkey gay-ignoring powerhouses like disney, it is not like we see actual authentic queer people, and they are literally there for less than a glimpse. By embracing possibilities of "authentic" queer representation and being able to call it queer even if it isn't, we are actively fighting the negative connotation of the words "gay" and "queer". The chance of something being gay Among Many Other Things is valuable because it makes queerness something positively connotated in a world where it is kind of ontologically not a thing. This is not something that we are doing with "just kpop" and "just boysplanet", this is an ongoing, active change of rhetoric!! that's why it matters. Something perhaps being gay does not suddenly emasculate someone or take aways their worth. And if people thing like that, then that's a thinking pattern we have to dig into because it is based on a reality that stupid little humans made up by themselves.
And in the same vein of embracing potentially gay things also check out my friend tyler's explicitly queer boygroup who call themselves "The First & Only All QBIPOC Pop Group" instagram.com/boibndofficial/ xoxo

Hi Star Creators! This is Adam commenting - here to say a couple things. First, I promise to show more charms and hard work for my next stage! ❤🌈
Ok but really re: my rant lmao
So many comments have come in and I'm so filled with emotion reading about how BP has helped you feel seen, especially those of you who identify under the queer umbrella. I really wasn't going into the recording anticipating saying any of that, in fact I had decided it was best to ignore the ignorants, but something sparked me and after seeing your reactions makes me feel a lot better haha.
When I first got into KPop, through BTS specifically, I felt like I had never felt seen before. My brain broke as a guy who's more feminine having grown up in the post 9/11 masculine America where people had to create a new term for men who wore a belt with their jeans (shoutout to the metrosexual community). Navigating every day as a gay person isn't new and definitely much easier now in America than it was even 10 years ago, but it's still exhausting. I'm so happy so many of us find comfort in this art form and this show especially (I can't believe i'm praising MNET; the end is near) I've grown to love so many of these trainees and seeing so many people outpour love to them not in spite of their proximity to queerness but because of it... it makes me feel like if I had this when I was 16 and figuring out who i was that i would be able to point to people and say "look, that's me" which would have been huge.
All this to say, I see you, I hear you, and you're completely and utterly valid in whatever you identify as. RJ and our co-founder Ryno created this channel in order to be a place for fandom to exist without toxicity and I'm so warmed to see we've carried that over to the kpop community (which, like any fandom, has its own share of issues). But thank you all, and keep being queer. Love y'all.

I'm watching this Ted talk right now and you're 100% correct. Gay people exist. We're here and have been forever. If we see queerness in another we celebrate that. We can celebrate the queerness that as you said so many of the boys on BP have been shown. Does not matter if they are or are not gay. They're showing us queerness and as you literally just said on "a queer narrative".

BoysPlanet is LITERALLY slowly turning into RuPaul's Drag Race and I'm living. The producers really said this week's mini challenge is a theatre challenge, where you have to sing and act in pairs to this scene from a musical. Between the mini and maxi challenges, Hanbin and Hao are really slaying the competition honey. They're serving us versatility and different concepts every week and I'm living. I'm so nervous for the eliminations next week.

And also, thank you, Adam, for everything that you said. The inherent homophobia of taking offense in assuming sexuality only if the assumption is a queer interpretation, and the erasure and damnation of the queer perspective - is goddamn disgusting and shameful.

for me, just seeing the contestants be proud to engage in queer culture, regardless of whatever their sexuality may be, is so SO impactful. the way they’re not afraid or ashamed to do things that might be seen as “stereotypically gay” is so refreshing as someone who grew up sapphic in a suburb where being gay was treated as the worst thing you could be. i think it’s wrong to act like queer viewers are doing something morally bad by identifying with contestants that are actively engaging in our culture (i.e. jiwoong bl, hanbin voguing, woonggi’s everything, etc.), ESPECIALLY when we’ve been historically deprived of positive representation.
also, a lot of the girlypop contestants are not only in on the joke, but they’re actively ENCOURAGING it (hanbin’s “haobin” comment, woonggi joking that he thought this was “girls planet,” haruto calling zihao his husband, jiwoong saying the jongwoo kiss was fun, i can go on). queerness isn’t something bad or something to be hidden, and clearly the boys think so too.
TLDR: it’s an indisputable fact that this show highlights many aspects of queer culture, and queer people are allowed to celebrate that.

PARK HANBIN is the moment!! ❤ We got so much content from him this week including the interview video that he led around camp. He is so talented and is insane that he hasn’t been in the top 9. Overall after much consideration he is going to be my one pick. He simply must debut.
Regarding the obvious queer content the show has, I want to say that this group has so many incredibly brave and unapologetic people. For some of them to be free and not putting a mask or persona, In a society as Korea and within the K-pop world has been so refreshing.
Overall we are seeing a massive switch into being openly yourself. They are making a change in the society. Just Woongki saying he wants to marry Taerae or Haruto calling ZiHao husband, is the most brave, honest and wonderful . They are simply true to themselves instead of living in fear of how to act or what to say ❤

someone on twt found that apparently kuanjui got evil edited by looking at hao's hair pins. that's why the drama felt so weird, because several of the scenes weren't even related to one another. it's so upsetting how much they have hidden kuanjui throughout the whole show, especially this episode when he had so many chances to get good screen time and every single instance got cut. (i am personally very bitter we didn't get the jui x taerae theatre scene because i just know jui ate it up.) i'm really hoping he somehow pulls through this round as he way too talented to lose, but chances are looking bleak 😞

Some of my personal favorite moments of the episode that nobody asked for:
    - The amount of wholesome Haobin content in the beginning of the episode was just so precious. Like when they were choosing partners for the little prince and Hanbin wasted no time to choose Zhang Hao as is partner🥲 and the clip of Hao sort of taking care of Hanbin when he was asleep and making by sure he was covered up like ugh Haobin best boys if they don’t debut together I’m going to Amazon Prime a personal whoop ass to Miss Mnet herself idc
    - Shuaibo’s hair extensions was giving the same energy as Taemin’s extensions in Sherlock. Take what you want from that comment
    - I’m so glad that Matthew was able to be comfortable with his part in the Say My Name. Like he looked like he was about to cry when they were practicing I felt absolutely horrible. But I am glad that him be Seungeon did end up changing parts because I do feel like they both thrived with the lines they ended up getting.
    - Also it was so refreshing to see Jiwoong pull of this concept. Like so far we’ve only seen this sexy masculine “tough” side of him and seeing him do this sort of concept shows how talented he is. He was giving the same vibe of that high school senior that all of the underclassmen have a crush on and/or want to be friends with
    - For Over Me I have four words: Zhang Hao best leader. And I agree with RJ I wish they showed more individual/personal coaching from the coaches like what they showed w Hao and Solji.
    - As someone who’s been voting for Haruto every single week since ep1 it almost made me legit cry seeing him finally get the attention he deserves and get the most amount of individual votes from the live audience (obviously he and Hao tied for the most amount of votes but still). Like he deserves the actual and I’m so proud of him for getting his moment to shine and be recognized for his talents like homeboy is the definition of all rounder
    - Also Kuan Jui’s pterodactyl screech when Over Me won made my CRY laughing

I feel like mnet has seen all the Mattwoong edits and said sure let's roll with this. They were definitely the pair I didn't expect, but I'm definitely hooked now. Everyone knows how strong Mattbin's relationship is... plus, I feel like they're trying not to angel edit Shanbin too much. It’s a JOKE that queer people STILL have to explain this stuff to straight people… thank you Adam for doing this. People needed to hear this and have a reality check.
If anyone still doesn’t understand what the whole point of this was.
Just look up videos on queer community, queer-representation, queer-codes. Educate yourself individually.
As a community, when we find anything WE personally relate to or see as “queer”. We do NOT mean it as an insult. I think the biggest problem straight people have (esp the younger ones), with understanding is. That saying “something or someone is gay”. It is NOT an insult. Because straight people have USED “your gay” as an insult for centuries. If a gay/queer person uses “your gay”, it is NOT AN INSULT. It is just USSSS a COMMUNITY relating.
For us. An oppressed community of CENTURIES!!! To finally be able to be open with the world, exposed, vulnerable. To finally have mediums to speak to each other and relate through queer codes through art, music, celebrities, fashion etc. it is a big thing for us.
Not everyone is able to have a queer community irl. Let me get personal. I as a person, irl do NOT have a singular friend whom I know in person, who is queer, who I can relate to, talk to, feel supported around. So I have to outsource connections online to find “people like me”. Then have to also find queer people with the SAME INTERESTS AS ME? It’s like digging for a needle in a hay stack. Literally… it’s not easy.

Not only does content doesn't have to be openly stated as queer to be interpreted as queer but they also don't always owe it to us. • @tetsuoseragaki
    @tetsuoseragaki ปีที่แล้ว +17

honestly, thank you so much for speaking on queer experiences and how that affects the way we see and interact with the world. it may just be me, but as an army and avid watcher of boys planet, i feel like ive seen A Lot of people coming for queer people and our interpretations of the art and scenarios we're being presented, from people flaming queer readings of jimins newest album to people coming for anyone who insinuates a bp boy may be queer.
it feels so disheartening to me that anytime we try to speak about how we relate to our fave artists as queer people, we're met with thinly-veiled queerphobia that the larger public never has a problem with bc its in the name of ""not making assumptions.""" but like you said, gay people are still gay in the closet--and nobody is ever *required* to come out to still be queer.
also, it also pisses me off bc in some cases it feels like people are straight-up ignoring things these boys have said or done in the past in an effort to cover up any insinuations of queerness. like, woonggi openly supports lgbtq+ rights, and has said before that he doesnt feel like being asked if he likes boys is a rude question. so it just feels wrong that people try *so hard* to shut any discussions of queerness down, as if its something shameful.
idk, this comment is way longer than it needed to be lol, but thank you again for saying what needed to be said!! ❤

The queer people before us have fought for our freedom to be able to express ourselves and to be open about who we are or not. I really really love this podcast bcs you guys's words totally match how i'm watching boys planet as a queer person. it's fun, it's light it's quirky and it's gay bcs we are!!

I really, really, really appreciated what Adam had to say about seeking and seeing queerness in media, and specifically that *YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COME OUT* TO BE "REALLY" GAY. We can just EXIST, in public, in private, at our jobs, on TV, as queer people, without having to owe anyone *ANY explanation* or any confirmation of other people think they are. Queer people do not solely exist when we are explicitly out to the general public! We are always here, just trying to do our thing and pursue authenticity, happiness, peace, and fulfillment while having to exist in a cisheternormative world that is more often than not deeply invested in keeping us in the margins (which is especially why we LOVE to see our people succeeding in the media -- no coming out necessary). There is nothing ~problematic~ about seeing and discussing people who we relate to and whose personalities, experiences, talent, etc vibe with our lives and community. And as Adam said, especially when we are talking about young artists in the freaking entertainment industry. Their whole thing is to be expressive and unique. I don't know what's queerer than that smh.
If your problem with this is on the supposed basis of some kind of "invasion of privacy" or "assumptions about their personal lives"..um, that energy must be applied to this entire concept of survival reality television. That's not a sexuality/identity thing. We are literally stanning men who we acknowledge are constantly being manipulated through deceptive editing and manufactured pressure and competition, and who are being exploited for their idol ambitions. That's the general cutthroat fuckery of hyper-capitalist entertainment. *The gays are not the problem.*

As a bi woman I'm frequently searching for queer content/subtext in korean media and your recaps of my currently favorite show is so fun. Pleaseee don't stop making comments or implications of queerness because 'people' only see a problem when you imply someone is under the queer umbrella. Omg I'm so shocked y'all didn't mention Haruto's comment on his fancam OR Park Hanbin's beret in that random extra video they dropped. But tbh there's so much to cover each week... I understand forgetting things LOL
The whole rant about queer people viewing things through an inherently queer lens was so great. Tbh I love blbp cuz you always point out things I was thinking about but didn't wanna say online since I feel like random people will yell at me for it 🫶 so yay ty. I get to sit in my room and be delusional while listening to y'all. it's so great.
Oh speaking of being delusional? The clip from the dorms when Park Hanbin was asking Keita why he didn't try for the larger rap part? They really just gave us 2 seconds of shirtless phanbin and expected me to survive? I didn't. I gasped when they showed that in the episode. The chemistry in my brain changed. I really like what you said about implying that an idol is gay, Seeing a bunch of people reacting the way that those one or two comments did but having thousand of posts daily going : Their girlfriend would be so lucky, or making edits of what their type of girl might be and you never see anybody getting upset that these people assumed they were straight just say it all. Anyway, in another dimension I would debut a girly pop group with woongi, seowon, phanbin, haruto, zhanghao and company and they would elevate bg music. Having a space that acknowledges queer perception in kpop, whether it's the participants/producers intention or not, is so good. I cackle at the drag race references because they are so on point. And Adam is right, there's nothing wrong with using our lived experience to analyse media. It's how we learned to see the world and spot each other in (sometimes unsafe) crowds.

as a lesbian, i really appreciated what you and to say! queerness always feels to need to be hidden so whenever you see it it feels like a shining light, like things are getting better. the whole reason i watched this show bc i saw how queer it was. if makes me happy to see queerness in a happy light. i feel seen, i feel like maybe things are getting better. i really appreciated what you said.
whenever queer people find queerness in anything (those) straights always try to make us feel bad for finding ourselves in things. (even though they go and make everything straight) it unfortunately is just how we are conditioned in this messed up society. (🤡) so thank you for speaking your truth, THE truth. and i hope they hear this and finally at least TRY to understand and emphasize.
i am SO tired of (those) straight people saying that queers are being OBNOXIOUS abt queerness. we aren’t we are finally just able to talk about it 🫠

Oh my goooood the queer rant 😭👏 I'm so glad you guys talked about this bc it's something that bothers me so bad in kpop fandom especially. As a queer person myself, it's so incredibly exciting and validating to see idols exhibit queer traits. Obviously well-intentioned queer kpop fans aren't trying to speak for these idols and assign them a label!! But it's so common, when someone talks about an idol being queer or showing hints of queerness, for people to try to make it seem like a problematic assumption and/or fetishization. Queer people exist all over the world, in all cultures, regardless of whether or not they're able to be explicitly open about it. Literally the reason why queer people are able to identify certain traits is because we have common lived experiences, but obviously non-queer people wouldn't understand our perspective :/ it's soooo frustrating. Thank you for articulating it so well!! ❤

Really glad they showed Jiwoong comforting Matthew. He's honestly such a nice person with the biggest heart. Mnet is definitely making Matthew the main character with how much focus was on him this episode, and I know people singled him out for his performance in Say My Name, but Jiwoong once again stole my attention with how mature and caring he is. It makes me so sad that people see him only as a pretty face. It makes me even sadder to see all the homophobic comments he gets. Someone literally even said they hope he's getting SA'd?? How can people be so cruel. Especially knowing what happened with ATEEN.
Also, people use the term "queerbating" so losely these days. Like, they really were accusing Jiwoong of queerbating for being in a BL drama as if we all didn't know the complications of BL dramas in Asian countries.
So please, consider giving your vote to Jiwoong. He's the biggest sweetheart who doesn't deserve to get hate. Don't let the homophobes win.

fun fact: they used to ask which of the performances do you like the best. in most (if not all) of the original produce seasons, they had everyone vote in boxes for a single performance after everything was said and done. which i agree is the better way to go about it.

They are all gay, unless they come out specifically that they are straight, they are gay. Idk why people mask they're homophobia with their own personal logic. Oh actually i know why, they feel more comfortable in a world where everyone is straight because it helps to stabilize a global patriarchy that envelops the world we live in today.

  • @maya-fv2go
    @maya-fv2go ปีที่แล้ว +6

The thing about BP, even if none of them are actually gay, is that they are actively partaking in queer activities. Shanbin specializes in waacking, which originated in gay clubs back in the 70s, Cong has old videos of him dancing in heels, Zhanghao is openly heterophobic (lol), and Jiwoong has literally made out with another man on television, to name only a few things. So I feel like when people are talking about how queer BP is, it's less about the contestants sexualities' and more about what they are doing.
As a queer person, I usually get uncomfortable when people label and insist upon an idol's apparent queerness, cus I have found that it's usually based on harmful homophobic stereotypes, and straight people take it is an opportunity to fetishize us. But I don't feel that applies to this, because again, the boys are directly taking part in queer or queer-adjacent activities. It's not about stereotypes or fetishization of queer people, but about boys who are comfortable with expressing themselves in whatever way, and not being afraid to partake in things that might be considered "gay".
It's comforting, because it's an indirect way to show that there is no reason to fear being labeled as gay or queer, because there is nothing wrong with being queer. So again, I feel it's less about their sexualities' and more about them doing and supporting things that are traditionally queer.

Ok here is my essay for you guys (you see the longer this series goes on the more I say in your comment section 😶.
    1) I think Matthew’s thing was slightlyyy different from Shaui bo’s just cause matthew never fully “gave up”. If shauibo was just depressed but still fully trying it would be one thing but he fully was just like “I don’t see the point in trying”. If Matthew didn’t even try I would’ve been hella disappointed as an “i love you I want you Seok Matthew” stan.
    2) Adam I know you said you felt stupid with what you were saying about the queerness of boys planet but as a fellow queer I truly thank you and don’t think you sounded stupid at all. It’s like knowing that plants make oxygen vs having a scientist explain exactly how. Yes I knew that not all gay people are the same but still how you analyzed it was very informative and I enjoyed it so thank you sm 🫶🏾🫶🏾.
    3) RJ Yes I know Ouran Host Club! and I know EXACTLYYY what ur talking about (coming from the person who did a whole vogue performance TWICE cosplaying as an Ouran character)
