  • Let’s review what’s going on in the backyard, shall we? Things still look pretty rough, but definitely spring is on the horizon. Allow me to show you what is starting to bus out, what I’ve done for the winter damage, and what I plan to do in the future. Lots to talk about! Hope you enjoy!

I’m a new gardener from Ohio in zone 6a and planted tulips and alliums for the first time in my garden and containers (300 of them!). They are all coming up so well I couldn’t be happier! It’s so exciting I’m like a kid at Christmas running out every morning to see the progress!

I too planted alliums in plastic containers this year -zone 9b/10a. They’ve got beautiful foliage and looks like buds are forming but not sure where to place them as spring heats up. In Most photographs they seem to be in shady areas!? What kind of sun do they prefer. Morning? Afternoon? ♥️

I agree with taking out what may not come back or just does not work, living in a 4 month growing season ( sometimes a little more) I must take advantage of what ever will grow and survive zone 3 -4. Temperatures sometimes go down as low as -30 and dealing with the permafrost coming out of the earth in spring has us having a little more patience ... But boy is it worth it, just being in the garden lifts our spirits in nano second; kind of like child birth, the pain of it but the reward are endless. So the below zero is in the past and it is time to start putting all those plans to work. Thank you for all the new things I have garnered from reading the comments and most of Linda for sharing all your wisdom and knowledge. If everyone in the world were gardeners what a better world it would be, learning patience and respect is one of the greatest attributes a human can have and Mother Nature sure pushes the envelope on both of those. So I am going out and talking to those little Alliums peeking through the earth after a long winters nap... how beautiful!

We are coming into autumn here, leaves on the trees are turning. But joy, o joy , today I looked at my much loved heritage roses. 6 had to be moved in the height of summer heat due to contractors, who messed us around something chronic. I thought we had lost them all, but no all have made it. So tomorrow they can all go back into their homes , before the heavy rains come. I certainly feel blessed, they have been a great joy producing year after year with beautiful dark red blooms and scent. It was lovely to look around your garden and I adore your jacket.

I am zone 9, north of Houston where we got that freaky cold/snow front. I was so concerned about my azaleas!! Happily, they are putting out new growth all along the stems. Will not trim anything! Talked to a friend today who let her yard guys cut them back. Too soon! Some of my dwarfs are blooming! Love Mother Nature....my Meyer lemon, still holding my breath! Thanks as always, Linda, for the updates on yours!

I’m south of New Orleans. I have never seen Azaleas 🌺 explode like this. Maybe it was the cold but all the hurricanes & freezes it has been a freak weather year but everything is exploding with new growth. Black oaks flushing out new lime green leaves in one day to naturally dropped seeds germinating from the spring sun. It’s pretty amazing.

Ty for inviting us to comment on our own garden plans. I find that very gracious and encouraging. I live in the Finger Lakes region of NY. In the last two years, we have taken down a problem tree and my husband built a “Garage-Mahol”, so I have been watching the new patterns of growth. I’m in North Texas, zone 8a, and I’m seeing Redbuds and Pear trees blooming in my surrounding neighborhoods. Such a stark but wonderful reprieve from all the dead rows of brown and crispy rows of shrubs, mostly skeleton Hawthorns and Pittosporums. I’m replacing mine today with shrubs I’d never heard of before: Distylium “Cinnamon Girl”. I already put 4 in the ground this morning and when I’m finished with my afternoon coffee and this video I’ll tackle the remaining 5. 🌱🌿. Life is good and nature will recover! 🍀🌿🌱

I'm enjoying your channel, Linda! I began my gardening life in OKC in a neighborhood similar to yours, but have been in Florida 9b for about 25 years now. Sooo different! I have made so many mistakes, but now that my children are grown, I have more time (and money) to really begin to get it right. While I can't do a lot of the beautiful things you do, mostly because of our wicked humidity, I love the fact that my growing season starts in February. 🌼😉 You've inspired me to do more topiary as I love the formality that the spherical and conical shapes bring to my garden spaces. Hey Linda! Love to "walk" along with you in your garden. Just pruned off all the dead flowers on my catmint. I grow a lot of it because the deer hate it and it looks wild to me. Also, over the years I've planted purple aliums amongst the catmint and I noticed last year all the dead vines of the mint were inhibiting my aliums. So I needed to get that all cleaned out. Well, that was fun !!!!
First of all - your ensemble is FAB U LOUS ! You look marvelous!!!
    1. You called those delicate bulbs “ Snowflakes “ & their botanical name - are those snowdrops? I planted 78 of them & they disappeared- 1st year had about a dozen - then they disappeared. I LOVE them.
    2. My snowball viburnum is 3 yrs old & covered in blooms. I could plant a dozen of them I love them so much. Love how you positioned that magnificent specimen on your site.
    3. Love the Naked Lillies. A welcome surprise in the fall. I have those.
    4. Hydrangeas- My neighbor cuts her hydrangeas to the ground. She cuts anything that looks dead to the ground. And I mean anything. It always gets to full size by summer. I would NEVER do that - but do confess, I sawed off an overgrown camellia & it grew back & I now keep it in standard form. Love it !
Right now, my creeping phlox, forsythia, Loropetalum, quince, daffodils, pear trees are blooming. Your redbuds are spectacular!!! I have 1 or 2 on my back acre with the pear trees. They’re magnificent trees & I’m honored to be able to see them bloom.
Springtime has become my favorite time of year, being in zone 7b too - It gets so unbearably hot here in summer. In another month- everything will be leafed out & we’ll be back to normal. 😁

Camellias are blooming beautifully. Knock Out roses are starting to leaf out, even though I haven’t cut them back yet. You described your gorgeous huge viburnum as starting out as a small plant from Lowe’s years ago! Love that! I believe in buying small for three reasons: 1/ less expensive, 2/ so much easier to plant 3/ plants grow! It only takes a few seasons for my small plants to fill out nicely! The time goes much faster than I originally thought it would. Btw, Linda, you may have started off as an amateur gardener, but all your years of educating yourself in your own back yard means you are no longer an amateur. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the rest of us. 😃

Zone 6B or zone 7 (depending on the winter) here in Sisters, Oregon. We sit at 3200 ft so high desert climate. Everything is setting buds - shrubs and flowering trees and roses and perennials are coming up. Daffodils about to bloom. Been doing major cleanup and planning for what I want to plant this year. We live virtually in. Ponderosa Pine forest so this time of year picking up pine cones is an almost daily chore. They are gorgeous trees though and provide much needed dappled shade in our hot dry summers. We had a pretty mild winter so everything looks good - I don’t think I lost anything. Any day I can be in the garden is a good day. 😍

Many of the roses are budding up and are showing new growth. Perennial garden is still asleep. The new rhododendron, Radiance', is in full bloom in the secret garden. Those edible baskets are so beautiful and lush.
I love your redbud. I got a switch many years ago at our U of M landscape arboretum plant sale for $25. I pruned it last year and hope it flourishes. Those pink blooms are so fun after a long, dreary winter. Then the cheery heart-shaped leaves that follow are adorable.
I ordered a couple clematis plants from Brushwood nursery (Erin @ The Impatient Gardener recommended that place). I was surprised how quickly their inventory was snatched up. I guess I shouldn't take so long to ponder.
I just got a catalog/idea book in the mail from David Austin and devoured it from cover to cover.
I saw several roses one zone higher than mine and wondered if I could still grow them near my foundation on the south side. Or pot them and overwinter them in my attached, yet unheated, garage.

Many plants including boxwood survived with just clipping needed. One week has made a huge difference in green showing up such as foxtail ferns. Brought 70 pot/containers inside before freeze! I understand “too many pots”! I am glad to have them now though!

I'm in Zone 6b, suburb of Detroit, MI. I'm itching to get to out in the garden, but I'm still being cautious. Last year, we completely tore out everything, right down to the bare earth. We'd had a HUGE Norway maple taken out the year before and what was left behind was a mess of ostrich and cinnamon ferns, orchid frost lamium, and a variety of hostas. The shade garden that is was, now suddenly was full sun! It turned into a brown mess. The foundation shrubs of junipers and yews were WAY overgrown and I was thrilled to see them go, as well. I planted symmetrically, for our 1927 Georgian Colonial, as my foundation plants, 10 Distant Drum shrub roses, 8 Koko Loko roses, and bordered them with boxwood, half on each side of the sidewalk. The corners of the house , I planted Columnar Blue Spruce. I also planted a pollinators garden and a conifer garden on the south side of the front yard. I can't wait to see how everything survived the winter! I've walked around, looking at everything, and I believe, it's all good. A week or so from now I should know. The backyard is going to be my next project. It's established, but it needs some tweaking.

I live in Wichita Falls, Texas. 2 hours south of OKC. Our climate is much like OKC...just a tad warmer at times. The freeze killed a row (about 30 ft.) of my pittosporums near my deck that had been there for 20 years. I was so sad! I often used the limbs in my flower arrangements. Guess what shrubs survived the freeze? My yaupons. So, I will be replacing my pittosporums with yaupons! The odds that a freeze will happen again like we had in February is pretty slim, but I hate the thought of loosing more shrubs due to the weather. I truly enjoy your TH-cam messages. I've started to incorporate baskets in my yard. Thank you for the idea!.
