Linda , I’ve had to recognize my limitations with gardening. I’m 63 now and have heart failure and will be getting my hip replacement with in a month or so. I purposely bought a home with a postage stamp back yard and long skinny flower beds and some containers for my pouch and small patio. That’s about all I can handle now and I’m very happy and enjoy it very much. It’s not a burden any longer.

Everything looks so beautiful! One of the many reasons I enjoy your garden is because it isn't big like GA. It is on a more realistic scale for me, yet it is full of inspiring ideas that are attainable. You have a good variety of plants and great garden design. I hope you will have time to just sit and enjoy what you have created. Many thanks to you and Stewart! Have fun in Singapore!

Hi Linda, I love, love your videos and you have given me so many ideas for my own garden. Can I now give you some advice. I’m 79 and have designed and tended my large garden, back and front for 50 years and have only just this year decided I could do with some help. Don’t ‘retire’ too early because your body will retire with you. At any age you can get somebody to do the garden for you but the satisfaction of doing it yourself is priceless! Have a lovely weekend. Angela.

Love how groomed your boxwood hedge looks!!! Always love to see your garden. Your vlog is so relaxing and takes me away from the harsh realities I live with day by day. I bought one of those hand held shears for my garden. I have used it so many times already and my garden looks better! The most severe heat is just about over here in the Arizona low desert Zone 9B. We have finally had some good rains in my area and the plants are all doing so well now. So looking forward to our mild winter this year. I will so like to do my own gardening work, but at the age of 72 I am realizing it's more than I can handle myself. So I will be asking for help from my boys whenever needed. Linda I really appreciate you telling us when you have that extra help. You still do most of the maintaining and it is beautiful. I really love your brickwork and I'm looking forward to redoing mine

Hi Linda, I love all your videos and have used many of your ideas. I watched your video on 5 things you would not do again because it is too time consuming. I have one that you may have not thought about. It is your glass table. I had a glass table but quickly realized it was too much work keeping it clean every day. So I bought a table with a metal top and wa laa! No more cleaning glass and when I water the plants it just drains through, so nice for me. Thanks for all your videos, I am trying to make my yard look like yours. 😊

I’ll still want to do it all again in the spring but I’m just ready for cool weather and some down time. Your garden looks wonderful! So nice to enjoy! My garden is still in the beginning stages at this new house. I’ve got tons of stuff to plant this fall that I’ve nursed through the heat. It really does seem like the summer that will never end. 🧐🧐☺️. The humidity is off the charts! So grateful for some rain, but with it always comes muggy and buggy. I didn’t think it could get any buggier, but it has! I was hoping to ease into September after such a hot, dry summer, but seems we need to sweat it out, literally, a little while longer. So grateful that there is not epic flooding or drought like some places are having though. 🙏🏻🙏🏻. It has been a good and productive and rewarding summer here in Missouri, so there is much to be grateful for! Thanks for inspiring us all, Linda! 💜

Oh, I'm so glad you said it out loud! Me, too!!!
I've spent so much time working in my garden in heat and humidity and even rain, mostly weeding, but I haven't spent much time at all just relaxing in it.
I had some lilies planted later last year so was looking forward to seeing what color they are. Nope. Missed the bloom time completely. 😟
From the desk in my office, I look out and can appreciate what I've done and that makes me happy.
I just have very little motivation left and have been looking forward to winter. 😱
Now, today, I did pick up some small mum plants and they're still in my car. Tomorrow.
Everytime I want to plant something I have to first weed. Crab grass is my current nemesis. That, and pigweed (which I'd been misnaming it as amaranth). I just want to whack everything back. I'm done gardening. Until next spring, of course.
By the way, I really love all the green in your yard. I used to love English cottage gardens. Now I think they look cluttered. You've inspired me and I may add some Emerald Green arborvitae and just make sure to keep them shaped.

I guess you could put pumpkins and gourds under a little cloche or something where they can’t get through. Maybe even in a pot pinned with stakes for extra anti-squirrel defense 😂🎃🍂🍁? Everything looks pretty ☺️💕.

Your back yard looks very nice! I’m with you on your fence. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! As far as hiring help I’m up there in years as you and hiring help. We have help cutting grass and weed eating which frees up time for other things.

looks beautiful linda! as for fence, the natural already has black tones that play into the stained portions. the two toned effect gives the garden more depth and the black accessories hanging from the natural fence tie everything together.. in my mind, no need to stain all the same color.

Lecothe gets large, trim tops so it fills out on the bottom . Hardy plant. I have 3 and thought they were done for after a huge snow storm flattened them and they snapped right back in the spring.

Leucothoe is a great little shrub! It does flower but the flower is not too noticeable. It's a little white bell-like flower hanging from the branches. The foliage is the best thing about it in my opinion and those sinuous branches and new burgundy leaves. They are native to Eastern woodlands and often grow along streams. I didn't know it could take a lot of sun...always thought of it as a shade shrub.

Stephen, this is one of my favorite shrubs for fall/ winter interest. The leaf color in fall and the branches are a reddish color through winter. I have also thought of leucothoe as a dry shade solution in my zone 8b PNW garden. Perhaps #southernlivingplants has come up with a sun tolerant variety. Have you noticed an early spring bloom with fragrance? Thank you for the garden goodness share!

Hi, Linda. Love your videos! I learn a lot from you. Have you considered just taking down your fence, and then you would be looking at your neighbor's new fence?

I suspect she’s not going to incur the expense of removal because she may move in the next few years to Colorado, she has been mentioning a possible move in the last year or so.

Linda if you sprinkle blood meal granules around your basil and atop your planters it will deter the squirrels, they don't like it. (not bone & bloodmeal, just straight bloodmeal) Your garden is lovely.

Hi Linda. I have a great story about the resilience of Arborvitae one year the deer had come along and literally eaten 2 of my small Arborvitae in pots to bare sticks overnight. Well I just put them back in their nursery pots and stuck them in a forgotten corner of my yard. Well I think this is 3 or 4 years later and I'll be darned if those two Arborvitae haven't come back bushy as ever. It did take time and patience and I'll need to shape them up some but they literally survived and came back in a neglected corner. I literally was going to throw them away. But what a surprising story of the will to live and never give up. They will make pretty topiary on the patio next year. Have you ever made a topiary out of Arborvitae? Oh and ps regarding squirrels had you ever considered actually putting up bird feeders when you do your pumpkins and mums? If they have an alternate food source they may just leave your precious plants alone. I know you probably don't want to feed them but I think it's worth a shot.

I’m glad to see someone else likes to wear a dress while gardening. Truly, if it’s over 80 degrees, I’m in a dress. Not anything fancy but so much more comfortable. Here in Texas it was brutal this summer and I had a favorite black dress that technically is a “swim dress” from Athleta. I could get sweaty and wet and keep cool. Justin boots and a big hat and if the neighbors wanted to watch, they deserve what they see! I’m kidding but try gardening in a dress! It’s much more fun since sweat happens might as well feel pretty😅
