- The Viking Thunder Clap is a football chant performed with a loud shout and a clap. The chant has been performed by fans of a number of clubs, but came to prominence during the UEFA Euro 2016, when fans of Iceland national team introduced their 'viking clap' or 'volcano clap' with a 'huh' chant.
During 2018 FIFA World Cup where Iceland was one of the participating teams, the clap once again drew attention. The Viking Thunder Clap has been adopted by fans of many countries worldwide.
The chant may have been inspired by the film 300 released in 2006. Some believed the chant was first used by fans of Scottish club Motherwell F.C., while others suggest it had been performed by fans of the French club Lens more than two decades prior. Fans of the Greek side PAOK have also chanted "PAOK" on the clap of hands since the mid 1990s. The version by Motherwell fans was passed on to the Icelandic fans when Motherwell faced Icelandic team Stjarnan in a Europa League game in 2014, and Icelandic fans then used it for the Iceland national team. During the UEFA Euro 2016, Iceland performed unexpectedly well and reached the quarter-finals, and the performance of the chant by their fans drew the attention of other European fans, who then also performed the chant. It has since been adopted by fans in many countries worldwide.
Other teams
Fans of the following teams regularly perform versions of the viking clap:
• Canberra Raiders
• Carolina Hurricanes perform a variant called "The Storm Surge.

• Minnesota Vikings chant 'skol' rather than the 'huh' since 2016.[13]
• Seattle Sounders perform a variant called "Boom, Boom, Clap" dating to before the club was reformed in 2009, chanting 'hey' rather than 'huh'.[14]
• Toronto fans have performed the "Boom, Boom, Clap" chant since 2008.[15]
• Vancouver Canucks used the 'Viking clap' at the final career home game for now-retired Swedish twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin on April 5, 2018.[16]

Now imagine this from 10,000 bearded, massive axe waving, vikings. You'd drop your tiny sword and run.
Mongolians:?
That's not how they look apparently
Giving me goosepumps man just thinking about it. Any good viking movies i can watch??

Haka vs Viking Thunderclap = GOOSEBUMPS
Haka is cringe
@@voiceofreason7567 frfr
Haka has ethnic, cultural, and historic origins.
The "Viking Thunderclap" is a football chant first used by the Icelandic people in 2006-2007 after they watched the movie "300" about the Greek Spartans.
There is nothing "Viking" about any of this. The word "Viking" has just become a label people slap on anything to make it sound cool. Like "Viking cereal" or "Viking beer" or "Viking burger"
@@voiceofreason7567 It’s tradition passed down for hundreds of years, I don’t think you’d know about respecting a long tradition
@@isaacyeon6334 they’re trying wayyy too hard to look tough 🤦😴😴😴
Im from belgium, so we have very fanatic supporters, but the best chants of all that time came from iceland!:)
The thunderclap came from Motherwell fc a team in Scotland
Half of the Icelandic population seemed to be there!! Awesome and powerful chant.
Gives me chills, so awesome.
Many battles throughout history have been "won" by a simple show of mass unity like this. Often a bunch of villagers/amateur soldiers would gather to stand up against forces like scandinavian, roman, a greek, etc's army and abandon the battle before it began.
Now that's a real Home - Away difference, imagine being the opponents and hearing this shit
All this energy gives me the chills!! Amazing!!!
Dang it, this gives me goosebumps (Im swedish) Your fans are totally awsome, cheers! 🍻🍻
Once we got the zoom out, I got the chills, so many people all working together...
The little kid for more passion then the adults. Her father must be a proud man seeing this
This again makes me want to visit Iceland. This and... Other things.
Berserker mode on!! lol
We Will Rock You from Queen is probably a huge hit in Iceland.
Such a great chant that it even inspired the other team...
Lovei it! Cheers from Sweden
unforgetable moment .unique way to support country
2018 WAS best summer of my life and most people too after that year everything went down hill

Imagine living in the Dark ages in a small Village and suddenly hear this loud chant from the Foggy river.
If you went to Iceland when this game was playing you could have burgled every single house and gotten away with a 5 star rating
Whenever I have a crap day this fires me up
Awesome!
Bro that’s like all of fucking Iceland chanting
Straight viking clap...love it from 🏴

Wow. Well done Iceland, you stole show.
I love the thunder clap

Genius
imagine being an alien and thinking "wtf are they doing?! is this some kind of mating ritual?"
Best fans!

Brilliant! How do they do that?? It' s nearly as scary as the Maori Haka!
This is not what I was looking when I typed up Icelandic thunderclap

I’m a Swede. Sweden had Vikings too. I’m disappointed we don’t have anything like this. Or perhaps I’ve missed it.
Lol you’ll be having your call to prayer instead
Sorry man your country gave it’s culture and traditions up
You have koran instead
@@DanielRodriguez-cr8ns Did you mean "quran" as in the holy script of islam, but the swedish word, or did you misspell korean?

Really would love us to do n English version where everyone drinks tea at the same time , moans about the weather then steals stuff from the other team to display at home

E aí vira bagunça
This actually originated in Scotland. Motherwell fans.
An Icelandic war chant from the Viking age originated in Scotland? What do you mean. Or the Icelandic team first did it against Scotland? Or do you mean the scots have a war chant that’s similar?
Scottish lies once again. Will you ever just stop making up nationalistic rubbish?
“Astonishing” lol
Aa aap aapt SMARTCHAT

Its euro not world cup
North Korea: Execute the failures
China: Berate the failures
England: Give racial slurs to the failures
Iceland: Give them a warriors send off!
What a strange comment. A failure is still a failure no matter how you frame it.
@@ASMRyouVEGANyet no im not vegan yet. In fact im just tucking into a nice juicy burger!.
Not really a strange comment. its a simple observation.
So the Vikings worshipped Freddie Mercury?
Not Iceland’s. It was created by Scottish club Motherwell.
😂😂😂
@@stevetattersall5933 it was.
It’s theirs now...

Did they chant “we suck” right after?😂
"Is-land" ;-)
😂
rude
Yet this started in Scotland.. the real warriors .. and I'm English .
still got conquered by danish 😂
That’s what a nation sounds like.
Iceland is made of tiny Vikings lol, real Vikings are in France (Normandy) & England, those who made history.
Some of the world strongest men have came from that tiny place in recent years. Their not very tiny. These vikings you talk of have in bred. At least they can say they represent.
Morocco just did this to Spain
and croatia
I believe the United States invented that in the 80s…nice try. Lol jk But do you remember the slow clap of the 80s?
Buddy youre a boy making big noise… Oh sorry
NFL fans are copying this now.....What a bunch of copy cats.
I think the Vikings who went into battle a 1000 years ago may well be disappointed in this. I think you need some rules when imitating your ancestors war cry
Rule 1. you must be able to grow a beard
2. you must put your all into it
3 your balls must've dropped and your voice must have broken.
these are the basic entry level guidelines, there would be other necessities as well
What's the point of your comment? It absolutely wreaks of misogyny considering women cannot grow beards and don't have balls.... So, really what is the point?
@@ASMRyouVEGANyet hahaha you've missed the point
I get the point but given this thunderclap was only introduced in Iceland in the mid to late 2000's and been practiced all over Europe before it reached the Scandinavian world their ain't much their ancestors must be disapointed of given they themselves never performed this clapping.
