Thanks for the film clip of Odions logo. That brought back memories. I think there's more you could have done to make your video more informative and memorable.
I found something, it was next to kresges on the left of the alley (not the right)- I remember the doors, the Grain Exchange Building that was used as a theatre after the movies ended. Maybe it was an adult thing , who knows. I recall a pool table in a basement and a bowling alley. then upstairs the theatre.
The theatre my master talks about was exactly between 8th 9th ave, on the west halfway before the alley. You had to go upstairs. He saw "Freebie and The Bean" there circa 1973 or so. Not the Grand which was between 7th and 8th on the east side
Got it "Historically it was the first building to expand Calgary’s business section off 8th Ave. The basement was designed as a bowling alley and billiard room providing business men a place to relax and socialize while at work." The theatre was upstairs, in the day Freebie and the Bean was considered soft x.
I have the name on the tip of my masters tongue. West side of the street between 8th 9th ave just north of the alley. Had to go upstairs. Master saw "Freebie and the Bean" there 1973 maybe 1974. The master was working for HBC at the time in the incinerator. It was the Kresge building then.
Emigrated to Calgary in 1967. The first movie I ever watched was the badly titled movie Krakatoa, East of Java (actually it was west of Java) at the theatre in the Brentwood Village Mall.
Brentwood village mall closed down in the mid eighties, the only part of the mall that is still standing is the section where the safeway (now called FRESH CO) a grocery store used to be but the theaters were torn down sometime ago.
1n 1978 the Corral Drive-In that closed was situated at Anderson Road and McLeod trail, where the Anderson LRT station currently sits. Upon its closure, the Drive-In rebranded itself as the Corral 4, and moved out to 60th Street and 17th Avenue SE in Forest Lawn. It closed in 1999 due to the Hub Oil refinery fire and explosion next door.
@@drprogensteinphp3169 was there a drive in along kennsington road across from what used to be a department of motor vehicles branch and across the bow river from edworthey park? there is a condo building there now but was it called the sunset drive in or was that on edmonton trail?
@@MrMichaelbsmith6420As far as I can remember, when the Corral was located at Anderson Road and McLeod Trail it was two screens. When it moved out the 17th Ave and 60th Street SE in Forest Lawn, it was four screens, and called the Corral 4. I don't remember a drive-in theatre near Kensington. But then I didn't move to Calgary until 1977.
My master says there was a theatre on 1st Street SW on the west side of the street between 8th and 9th avenue. You had to go up some stairs. He can't find any reference to it. He saw a comedy movie there in 1974. Any ideas??
@@MrMichaelbsmith6420 are you sure? the grand was on the east side of 1st street sw between 7th and 8th. The one i am talking about was on the west side of 1st street between 8th and 9th - had to go upstairs
Very good. However, regarding 1978: the Corral Drive-In that closed was situated at Anderson Road and McLeod trail, where the Anderson LRT station currently sits. Upon its closure, it rebranded itself as the Corral 4 Drive-In, and moved out to 60th Street and 17th Avenue SE in Forest Lawn where it ran its course until closing in 1999 due to the Hub Oil refinery fire and explosion next door.

Went to the Corral Drive-In many times!
May long weekends were the best at the coral..
My master says Enderby , BC drive-in still functions. He watched movies there 2019.
Wow, the Enderby drive-in is open for business - renamed Starlight. May opening, have to go there. My masters Dad lived there. See the goat bridge..

Remember, Alberta banned "A Clockwork Orange."

See Freebie and the Bean Scene 9 - pretty violent at the time
Voiceover mispronounces many of the landmarks and names
That’s the problem with using computers to narrate, not a human being. Although some humans aren’t much better…
I remember going to movies at the Palace Theatre in the late 70’s. Specifically Star Wars. It was amazing. Was it run as an independent theatre?

Crazy. Didn't know there was a theatre there.
Where approximately was it? By London Drugs or Co-Op?

Great bit of Calgary Theatre History
You didn't mention when the 17 ave drive in opened? we lived right behind it and we watched movies from our back yard.
