Woodcock are a really neat bird to know about. All wings and beak. Sometimes they fly like butterflies, just all over the place. But they're in control, they are navigating. They also make a distinctive whistling sound with their wings most notably while first flying up from the ground. Thank you for capturing & posting. ben/ michigan
where I live they also - after fluttering in one place for a few seconds way up high - dive straight down making a 'roding' noise something like rapid shuffling of a deck of cards.
@Stamps9311 I don't know. I've heard the term used incorrectly for Snipe as well. Snipe drum, Woodcock rode. The term is used for the territorial display flight of the male.
Make sure you dont give the location away as some people with be after them!!I still can not believe that this rare bird is still allowed to be shot in this country!!
I think your comment is somewhat over emotive and absurd in you reference to not giving the location out to you mean shooters. What an ill-informed and somewhat ignorant comment guided at the shooting fraternity. "You just cannot go on land will nilly shooting at anything, once again someone doesn't engage their brain before making ill-founded criticism at shooters. And the Woodcock isn't rare, although they have dropped in numbers.
'Some of the loony and totally misinformed comments once again by someone who obviously doesn't know anything about (Woodcock). In certain locations this bird is far from rare, and yet again shooting is often blamed for so-called lack of numbers. "If you do your homework you'll realise that shooting and conservation go hand in hand.
@@doctordolittle3652yea… people break the law… I found at least 6 of them call back and forth with several of them flying right past me… I had the means to shoot them, I always do when I’m trespassing… I won’t be shooting anything in that property but you best believe I’m cleaning out the morels there in a few months. I won’t be tell anyone about it at all… hell I’m not even going to mention the beech trees that are there or they’re get carved up. You're showing your ignorance. Read up on these birds & educate yourself. They are migratory and hunting them is guided by international laws & understanding. In the U.S. A. They winter in southern states and summer as far north as Hudson Bay Ontario. You take "ME" for an idiot, uncaring and ruthless. You are the idiot uncaring and ruthless; it's called "projection.''' Liberals always project their doing onto others. It's like lying: Liberals lie without a care. Example in your statement about Woodcock being "endangered." Why didn't you throw in some BS about man maid global climate. Hey: I saw a Liberal Bumper Sticker that said " Save The Planet, Kill Yourself." If the shoe fits
so many woodcock shooting videos, ugh, great to find this wonderful film of a very mysterious bird. hate to see them on my butcher's counter, of course nothing I say has any effect - oh there are plenty this year :( . make me feel we are like Med countries shooting at the migrants
Absolutely not. You are mistaken. No lures were used in the filming of this piece at all. We know where the Woodcocks are roding. They establish territories in the spring and display around the perimeter of the territory. There is no need to use a lure to see them roding. In order to film natural behaviour, it is better to use patience rather than trickery. These Woodcock are also allowed to breed in peace. Nobody is shooting at these birds.
very good filming of the woodcock ,,,,,,but,,i hear a digital lure ( cassette) in d background so there you can use it ,,,hear in malta NO so are we 2nd class !!!!
It's not great and I for one don't like the idea of anything being shot. However in the winter numbers are swelled by migrants from the continent so most of the birds shot are not residents.
I wager that tens of thousands shooters repeated the same misguided mantra about the Passenger Pigeon. We need to learn from history not ignore it because it's inconvenient.

Great to see a woodcock video that's NOT about shooting them! Refreshing! Thanks, I found this really helpful in identifying them near my home.

Thank you for sharing, they are quite a curious bird ...

Türkiye hello 👋

Read about B ASC and see how they help the Woodcock. Shooting will never harm their numbers, it's down to land and various other activities.

Please can you do same video 2023?
