Just stumbled across you guys. I’m a Scot who hitch round SA in 1992 for 3 months in my kilt and fell in love with your beautiful country. I’ve been back a few times - last time we took a Hilux with roof tent up into Botswana for a month which was amazing. Looking forward to sharing your adventures - thank you.
Canopy camper owner here. I mounted my tail gate camera in the hole for my spare tire let down perfect for my trailer hitch and I bought a digital rearview mirror from wolf box mounted that camera above the rear door I have a bird eye view of what ever I am towing
ACCC is a great rig. IMO for 2 people - you should have got the long box truck & 6' camper. U should put the fridge in the rear passenger side so it can be accessed when you are inside & from the side canopy door & from the rear door. To have is front and centre means each and every time you need a beer (et al) you will have to go into the camper. That will get real old real quick.
Awesome setup. If you going to do a canvas cupboard make the zip opening so they fold down. You don’t want to have to hold or roll the flap up. You will need three hands. Safe travels.
Surely you could run air lines to mounted connectors with rubber covers in a couple of points around the car for filling tyres with air and a master power switch inside cab to prevent unnecessary cycling?
Great Video!! Good idea to do an extensive trip and find out what works and what does not work. We went on a trip through Zimbabwe and Botswana when we first got our Canopy Camper (Christened "Hilux Hotel" as it is that comfortable, and works for both English and Afrikaans..) and also did everything temporary on that trip. Just to make up our minds on what would work best. It is now two years later and we find we are still making adjustments as we go along. At some stage check the back filler plates for waterproofing as we found that after our first trip we needed to re-seal some of the mounting bolts as there were some water leaks. Just spray with a hosepipe and some pressure to check. We also found that it is worthwhile leaving a small space open at the back in the centre so that you can still access the tent and bed area even when you have all your gear (Chairs etc.) loaded in the back. It does happen sometimes that you have a short overnight stop and do not want to unload these items, before getting to bed. (Just some suggestions to consider..) We will be following this series with great interest and am sure we will learn a lot and incorporate some of your ideas!!!😉
Can't fault Alu-Cab they really have some great products but there is nothing like a Bushlapa. You guys are young as you get older climbing in, out, up and down from tents or having to pack up and secure your things just to go for a game drive or 4x4 route becomes a mission every time. Simple and easier is what it's all about. Happy adventures and I wish you all the best on your travels.
Never mind the EPIC shakedown... this was an EPIC episode! Very enjoyable. Can't wait to see the actual shakedown of the new setup! And congrats on the new configuration!
I can’t wait to see the adventure! I appreciate you bringing us along Especially showing us the finer details you can see how passionate you guys are about this and it makes for a fun viewing experience for sure. I want to buy a 2006 scion xb and “off-road-ify” it somehow I like the boxy shape of the vehicle I think that makes for a good starting canvas in regards to space utilization it’s just tough finding one in good shape for a good price I guess that go’s for anything used right haha
Been on my wish list for years, cause its so expensive I have to save up money to buy it. Most likely buying the basic version in 2025. Then adding stuff "every" month after.
We are a family of 4 traveling southern africa with our canopy camper since october. Could give you a very good tips about space, jeje. We are currently in jeffrays bay close to PE.
Congrats Matt. Looks awesome!!! Were eagerly awaiting this episode... I am in the process of also buying a used 2.8 GD6. What is the mileage of your truck now? Manual / Auto? What is your average fuel consumption in town and on the open road with your "previous" setup??
Great video on setting up your vehicle for the lobg road. Just a thought - do you think its a good idea to keep the toilet seat thing with your braai grid? 😂
Hi Matt, thanks for a great new vid. As a new subscriber, could I ask you for a favor? What is the overall height of your Hilux as it is today? I am trying to determine if a similar vehicle would fit through my 242cm height garage doors? Thanking you. Ian
This is awesome , i like your craftsmanship ,wish i could learn those skills myself. I love the canopy camper but my question is can i put it on and off if not going away and how is the fuel consumption average? All the best and looking forward to this series and thank you for sharing
Fuel economy on the whole trip (including a lot of low range 4x4 stuff) was under 12L/100km. Which is more or less the same as my previous setup. And no, unfortunately you can’t easily take it on and off.
Hi Guys. Nice video and all the best. We also have a Hilux that we have very much converted and added onto. Dont you please want to address the concerns and stress of driving a Hilux in South Africa? We that to be a major problem for us at the moment. We are very invested into the vehicle but scared to drive around in it? What is your view and the viewers view on modification and hijack risk? Does it reduce? What else can be done to reduce hijack risk?
Hi Matt. Really enjoyed the video. I always find the planning stages so exciting. I'm keen to chat to you regarding the custom cabinetry for your rig. Feel free to make contact. (I am local)
Fantastic opportunity to do such a build from scratch, great video. What's the name of you navigation software? I don't see it in the list of items used.
Thx for the video 👍 For me access to the fridge is so important. Where your fridge is now you have to climb in and out of the back to open it. Even access from the gull wing windows would be easier? On the other hand every trip you do you will think of a better way to do things 😂
While it’s a marvellous canopy camper. However, why oh why does anyone want it in black ! Can you imagine how hot that’s going to get ! All that heat gets absorbed by everything inside and will surely make it quite unpleasant to sleep in it. Also, how much harder does the fridge have to work ! Exit battery life.
That fridge is too far back IMO, especially if you gonna put chairs in that passage. It's gonna be annoying getting to stuff in the fridge for a quick stop like game drives. I rather have it on the side.

Beautiful man! Can't wait for the upcoming series 🙌🏿

Great episode Matt
Loved the planning part
Good luck safe travels have a great time 😁😁
Great video & though processes Matt!
Hi budd long time we've missed you. I like the new rig isn't it heavy though?

Very nice Matt, still the best SA TH-camr
Hi Matt. Where can I send you photos of my setup? I had the same empty alucab

Awesome video !

It’s called GaiaGPS. It requires an annual subscription fee but is 100% worth it!
@@mattdubber Great video Matt. Any reason why you go with Gaia as opposed to Tracks4africa ? Any pros and cons we should know about ?
the toilet seat would be good inside the back door
What holds the back door of the new camper open and rigid in place so it isn't wiggling about at all while using it to cook on the new shelf etc?
Gas struts. And there’s a strap that keeps it from opening too far, although the design is a bit poor, I’ll have to reinforce it somehow.
good luck bubba...
Awesome 👍🏻👍🏻
Amazing! 👊
very cool!
How many years would it last with weathering
It’s aluminium. So it will last as long as the seals last. And those can be replaced.
Wth matt...why no n.a.c. for you this year. We Missed ya man
Why is the rear side/ wall table so heavy/ solid??
You're not going to sit on it?!😅😅😅
Surely it could be made out of something lighter?
Exciting 👏
@@james1795I did …. Always exciting doing a new build

Climbing in and out is quite easy, much easier than the previous system I had with the tilting fridge slide and having to drop tailgate every time.
the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys

Does it come in different colors? Cause I've only seen it in black.
That fridge is too far back IMO, especially if you gonna put chairs in that passage. It's gonna be annoying getting to stuff in the fridge for a quick stop like game drives. I rather have it on the side.
Don't cut that strap u cant make it longer if necessary
Fabulous to see how you set up your camper. Some great content on your channel!
