    i love his audition story: when taemin was auditioning at the open audition the staff told them to not cross the yellow line on the floow and dance behind the line, little taemin, as the rebel he is, crossed that line as soon as the dancing started and that act impressed the judges and made them think “that’s the kind of people we are looking for” happy birthday to our maknae and the greatest dancer king of kpop taemin 🎉

    Taemin can do just about anything he wants with dance. What I love about him is that:
    1) He taught himself how to dance beginning at age 9/10 by copying MJ and other favorites in his mirror, then extrapolated that early self-training into what he has become today.
    2) He's very experimental. He loves to try new genres and then take bits and pieces to create his own signature style. This is why I think he is the best dancer in Kpop, because I haven't seen any other artist pull off such a self-created dancing style that is recognized as a genre unto itself like Taemin.
    As for SHINee, they are my ult group, and even they have said in an interview that it has always been Taemin who has pushed and challenged them constantly by always demanding more from their choreos. This actually made them all excel in their dancing. Taemin also regularly tweaks SHINee's and SuperM's choreos by adding more details making the choreos more eye-catching and unique. All the SHINee brothers can dance extremely well. Key is the next best dancer in the group, but his and Taemin's style are quite different. Key is more abrupt and powerful in his movements within SHINee and as a soloist. However, Taemin is always adjusting his style on the fly. With SHINee, he blends in seamlessly, but is also easily recognized for his extreme fluidity (now, thanks to you, I know where that comes from...lol). With SuperM, he's much more powerful, but that same liquid fluidity is still with him which makes him look much more elegant to the discerning eye. In his solo work, he has always said he dances according to how he is feeling at that moment while immersing himself into the character in the song. In this way he is always adding little -- but important -- details on the fly while also making it new every time. This is also a key reason why others find it so hard to cover him, because the choreo is ever changing. Lastly Taemin always follows through with the movements which is something I also don't see many others do.
    Thanks so much for this very informative and interesting video!

    This is a great and detailed analysis. One of the subtle things I love that Taemin does is he is very particular about when he faces forward/faces the camera. Because he's not always so front-facing he looks so much more absorbed in what he's doing. It gives an impression that he is moving for the love of the song and for himself as opposed to for others. It also gives him a bit of a mysterious air as he discussed on MMTG a while back. It's a small thing but is very noticeable once you start looking for it and then watch other idols

    I actually love Shinee as a dance group. Onew, Minho and Jonghyun are competent non-dance line members, Taemin is one of the best (THE best in my opinion) dancers in kpop (maybe in the world), Key could be a main dancer in most groups (including 4th gen) and their choreographies are always great

    The phrase "groove is in the heart" (cr. Lady Miss Kier) explains in the simplest terms what makes Taemin the exquisite dancer and performer that he is. He dances from the groove in his heart, in the moment, embodying the totality of the music. Add the fact that he virtually never loses his center of balance, and maintains an ideal head to spine coordination. This makes him a world-class dancer and a sheer joy to watch.

    Taemin has long been one of my favorite dancers in kpop, along with Wang Yibo, because their passion for the craft and respect for dance as an art medium is so apparent in their work, down to the briefest choreography for a TH-cam short.

    I've been waiting for this video and it did not disappoint! I learn so much from each of your videos.
    I think for me, as someone with a ballet/contemporary/modern background, the reason Taemin is one of my favorite dancers is how good he is at using his lines as well as his upright posture. I've always thought he was a beautiful dancer and this definitely plays a big part in why he is one of my favorites to watch, as both of those are very important in the styles I've been practicing the longest. Another thing is his ability to make shapes which in my personal opinion is one reason why Move is so hard to cover. My teacher always says that hitting shapes is never enough and that being able to move through them is what makes dance, dance. But especially in Ballet, being in the most aesthetically pleasing position throughout the entirety of the choreo, as well as highlighting these shapes is extremely important. When doing Move, if you only think about the steps and don't think about the positions your body is supposed to hit, you aren't going to look nearly as good as Taemin. Another thing you can see if you look at a Move cover is everyone's need to add extra movement or extra force to the choreography to "make up" for how "simple" the choreo is, which defeats the purpose of the choreo. It isn't meant to be flashy, it's meant to be subtle which is unusual in Kpop. Another thing, which was mentioned in the video, is the ability to tense and relax. This helps with his textures, which makes him more interesting to watch than someone who is always stiff or fluid. Also his added popping makes choreography more satisfying especially when it compliments the music well!
    I think the Hard choreo definitely suited Key and Minho more than it did Taemin. In my opinion Taemin tried to adjust the choreo to fit his personal style instead of adjusting to fit the choreo, if that makes any sense.

    ahh thank you so much for this, super cool to see the popping influences on his performances and how his style/execution has changed through his journey!! one thing that struck me watching was how he totally has that upright, centered posture yet a lot of taemin pictures that stand out to me are when he drops his upper body and rounds his back (even how he holds his neck in moments like the hard ending!), similarly how he can do such complex, sharp, '"fast" choreo yet excels in still/milked out/fluid moments - just a study in contrasts, tho i can see how isolations and popping/groove elements like glides play a role in it all.
    i feel like i need a part 2 just to dissect his 2371029 mph heel spins, why his signature walk is so striking (assuming something to do with lines), what predominant genres his latest solo choreos fall under, and what makes his presence so dramatic/epic/expressive/elegant (can you tell i'm not really a dancer adlkfj) esp in his solo work. tysm again for all the amazing breakdown, i always learn a lot and appreciate idols' performances more! ❤

    I see Taemin and I click. Taemin is my absolute ult, as well as SHINee. Though I love the others to death, I always find it nearly impossible to tear my eyes away from Taemin. It takes many times through a video before I watch the others, and I STILL find it difficult. That's saying a lot, given how talented all SHINee members are. As a university professor, I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis, excellent work! The only things I would change are (1) to slow it down just a tad to give just a bit more time to read and then analyze, and (2) for non-shawols, it would be nice if you listed the origin of each clip, e.g., Move Dance Practice, Love Like Oxygen Performance video, etc. Thanks for honoring Taemin, and yes I am absolutely loving the Hard era.

    And just a real trip down memory with SHINee’s old choreo - i really like a lot of them so it was so nice to see the showcase there. Nice also to be able to identify now with more info from your video as to what makes them unique and why they are so different to current types of kpop choreos.
    Random thought but a close up side by side comparison between koharu’s and Taemin’s executions of move would have been super interesting to illustrate the differences between a more jazz (and line) based execution vs Taemin’s more angular kind of style. But those are just shower thoughts really.

    Wow! I kid you not when I say that this video was beyond helpful!!! Seriously, thank you!
    Not just when it comes to studying Taemin (which is what I have been doing recently) but also to expand my vocabulary of things and movements that I already knew of but didn't know the name, it awakened my eyes and it gave me my passion for dance back!
    To tell you the truth, I am kinda self taught in funk styles and a little bit in hiphop styles like krump, but with the amount of years I've spent learning street jazz I kinda lost that, and with the vocabulary that I didn't have I was kinda lost on what I could or couldn't do, on the history of dance and what I knew of it. This video alone gives me timelines, gives me knowledge, gives me the tools to analyse a kpop choreography, to see idols like Taemin bringing things to the table that I never realised and other dancers and artists in general around the world do the same. I grew up watching dancers like Dytto, Les Twins, Fik-Shun, Mary Poppins, Ian Eastwood, K-K Harrys, keone madrid, Aya Sato, Kim Lia, Choi Hyojin, Rikimaru Chikada, Rie Hata; crews like The Jabbawockeez, royal family, etc.. and while some of them may have a more jazz or hip hop foundation, a lot of them as you may know utilize popping or are poppers.
    And when becoming a Shawol through Taemin and seeing his background and the beginnings of his solo career, seeing him learn a choreo from Ian for his song 'Danger' was a shock but at the same time so obvious (I had watched the mv first before looking into who did the choreo), same thing for view! Now I see why I find Taemin so captivating; case in point, in 'Move', while the dancers really exagerate the speed at which they go (the key word being dynamics, oh my God how much my dance teacher used that word lol), Taemin doesn't move more than he has to. I can appreciate both, but Taemin takes the win. Is it just because he's the evil maknae and baby cheese of his group, or is it because he's at the center of the choreography as the singer hence why his personal style comes thru more? Probably a bit of both lol
    But thanks to this video I now know of Electric Boogaloo, of the scarecrow (which I thought that it was strutting but no it's not), I know of the importance of groove in dance styles made for funk which I inherently already knew of but again, I didn't have the vocabulary of the context to fully grasp it all. So your video wasn't made in vain. Honestly, if your other videos are that informative, I might subscribe! I'll need all the help I can get on my dance journey!
    Thank you for this!
    P.S.: Do you know if Koharu was trained in Jazz or something else? I follow her on instagram, and when I look at her current work and older work (with Taemin or other things), it seems to lean more towards modern jazz or contemporary, but she sometimes moves and grooves exactly like Taemin. So maybe she started differently?

    I would also like to add that one reason I particularly liked this video is that it's not a ranking/putting different idols' dancing against each other. As I'm scrolling through the comments I see some asking whether x or y is a better dancer and to do rankings of a, b and c. I know that's popular right now but I think videos like this one is a lot more interesting. People with actual knowledge sharing what styles have influenced different idols and how that impacts the way they execute choreography.

    I really appreciated so much about this video/instruction. The detailed descriptions coordinated with Taemin's and others' dance moves. Important to see the influences. You did not make this video about you (as so many 'reactions' and 'analyses' are), and watching this was really instructive and worthwhile. Thank you.

    Great job with this, it was so interesting. The explanation about the differences between funk and hip hop dancing was super enlightening for me and I really get why Taemin pushed hard for hip hop tracks now. I didn't realize just how different the two styles are; just makes my respect for him go up and up that he constantly challenges himself. Thank you for this awesome analysis! I'll think of it often.

    LOVE ur vids, I sometimes miss the way Taemin used to dance but at the same time i feel like the way he dances is so HIM now, I also think he has gotten better in certain aspects, like his gliding, dime stop, pop, etc(would love ur opinion on that). And to answer ur question, in my opinion I expected a little more from Taemin in HARD, in some performances he seems to not give it 100% but when he does (concert, newest performances) I gagged. And Key stole my attention 😂. KEEP IN MIND I don't know much about hiphop, so visually it looks nice but I personally can't tell is he executed the choreo well, I just wanted more.

    • @le_pierrot_rouge
      @le_pierrot_rouge 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think it's good to take account that shinee were under a lot of pression and work in the promo weeks, they had recently finished 3 dates of concerts back to back without onew plus all the exhausting preparations they did before that for the concerts and the new album, so to me it's normal that taemin was not perfoming at his 100% in a lot of perfomances besides before he has talked about that he's normally "lazier" in the parts he's not the center (in music shows not in concerts) so yeah I take that as a matter of keeping his energy for the highlights moments. Other thing is that the second week they were singing live with hand mics. That's it.
      About the other point I kind of miss all the little quirks and mannerisms he had in different eras too (not only dancing but in vocals too) but at the same time I prefer the way he continue growing up and developing his unique style, always challenging himself to do new things and yet still keeping his essence from his beginnings and sometimes he even revisited these moments from the pasts and it feels very intentional and nostalgic, I don't know if I'm explaining well. But I think that's truly remarkable of him, he's always evolutioning.

    • @maggot2259
      @maggot2259 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @le_pierrot_rouge yes, I completely agree with u, even tho I miss the way he used to dance, the way he dances now is pretty unique and he owns the way he dances now, to the point that people can tell if it's him dancing even if they can't see his face 🤣. And im 100% not calling him lazy just incase u thought that, I just wanted more because when I would see Key and Minho they seem to be into it a bit more(maybe it suits them more or they really like the song). But yes ik that he saves his energy for the dance break/solo or sometimes it's because he's singing live. I always keep that in mind, but good thing u pointed that out because many forget that and how they have to do Onew parts too.

    • @le_pierrot_rouge
      @le_pierrot_rouge 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@maggot2259 haha no, i didn't think you called him lazy, it was my way of paraphrase his own words hence the "" tho for aclaration he didn't say lazy per se. I see your point more clearly now I don't agree exactly but I understand that you perceive he's not that into the choreo. In my opinion he prioritized being relaxed and cool - and hot but that's normal for taemin - which is kind the opposite of what he normally does and it's more in vibe with hip hop and hard so for a artist who has a very notorius style I think he adapted well.

    I'd love if you could make an analysis, even just a short one, of f(x)'s luna. She's always been a great dancer but since her stay in NY she's improved even further by taking popping and locking classes among other styles.
    Also it's very interesting that he and kai trained together but are polar opposites in terms of groove. And I love how you explain groove because it really reminds me of how my coaches tell me to make sure there's a connection between my movements and i realize it's really connecting the moves together AND the moves to the music.

    I honestly hope for the return of the simpler, but funner kpop choreographies. It's been a little too much hiphop lately - and too much of the same, commercial, "hard" (=fast, powerful, aggressive) choreos, very little funk or heels or girly or groovy.
    I want more Sistar choreos, more Bboomm bboomm choreos, more Brave Girls High Heels, more AOA choreos. There's been enough of the aggressive and inelegant dances for the time being...

    Wow, thank you for making this video! I became infatuated with his dancing a decade ago and he pulled me into kpop no matter how hard I resisted it. I've been a fan of many kpop groups since, but the only other person to have my full attention like Taemin does is perhaps only Jimin, although they dance differently, their charm is just so unavoidable. I wondered why Taemin had that effect on me and this video has been so educational! Now I appreciate Ms. Koharu's genius even more. I wonder if she considered all of Taemin's dancer qualities and gave him a choreo to work with knowing it would highlight his personality in a way that cannot be mimicked by anyone else? Amazing!

    Taemin is just a Koh-i-Noor of dancers, there is just one. But I never realised it was funk. I really love funk - but I am from a nordic country, Estonia! and we hardly have anyone who has that kind of pop and groove. They do try, but... it is like a school playback...
