    In 1990, I went to Thailand... first time out of the US. Beautiful country, beautiful people, and the most astounding street food... at the time a plate of pad thai like the one in this video cost ~$0.25US, and it was the best food I had ever eaten.
    I still travel a lot, but if I tried to make a list of the best places I've eaten in the world, a street vendor on some random road in Thailand would easily be in the top 5.

    All I see is people complaining about the hygiene. I guess this is why we (South East Asian peeps who have loads of street vendors like these) have much stronger stomachs. one of my friends saw me eating mapo tofu one day and he got so shocked and said "omg those things will give you diarrhea" I just looked at him.. confused. like "dude, I eat this almost everyday, my stomach feels fine"

    • @spidaminida
      @spidaminida 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Nah, it's strictly bull. We are fed (no pun intended) a lot of nonsense about germs and what "makes you sick", especially when you go a travelling. Water is definitely a real risk, as it often is to the locals, but if the place is busy then it's probably more hygienic than a restaurant where they don't have the customer looking over their shoulder!
      I'd get lunch at a street vendor over a restaurant any day. You can see exactly how the food is made, it's cheap and the food will be fresh that morning. Obviously you have to be sensible but street food has never done me wrong (except for when it's too spicy!!).

      we of the poorer class eat stuff that would give others with weak stomachs diarhea but i still maintain hygiene.

      I have always had a question about cooking hygiene that this video reminded me of(this is universal, nothing to do with Thai). How is it ok to touch raw meat with the same spatula you serve the meat with when its cooked? This guy keeps them basically on the pan so I imagine they are well over 100 degrees, but normally in America you flip raw chicken with the same tongs you use to take it off the grill and there is no cross contamination.
      I don't get it, but I'm probably being dense, like Bill Burr not understanding how something as heavy and metal as a cruise ship can float, especially when you put a pool in it.

      I spent 4 months in Cambodia and Thaïland,i've eaten in street food like that all over the place and i never had any stomachache or dirrhea. The only time i get sick was because of the bus AC lol

      Khaitoon Katy Kendall you are completely right, we europeans eat so much "classy" and tasteless food that passed hundreds of health inspections that it gets to you lack of everything. Therefore, when we eat like that we have the runs: diarrhea happens.

    this guy looks like a professional. his stall is clean and neat he keeps things in clean containers and obviously has a lot of appreciative customers if he's able to claim a regular spot as the video description suggests. tbh i find street vendor food to be some of the best in the world because it's not mass produced, the vendors all have their own recipe combinations so you get unique flavours from vendor to vendor and when you ask them how long have you been doing this they all say for years. if hygiene was such an issue i'm sure they would be run out of town or have locals telling tourists not to trust this vendor or that.

    Pad thai is so good and even if i tried alot of the normal dishes in many different "tourist"-restaurants in Thailand, I always end up ordering Pad thai. My thai friend who is more Thai than Swede laughs at me because he says preferring Pad thai is like preferring french fries from the French cuisine or Carbonara from the Italian cuisine i.e a kind of a "poor-mans" dish

      +Terri Medlock It should be :) Pad thai is made from egg noodles if I'm not mistaken. Rice noodles > Egg noodles (fatwise). I am very Nigerian and the street food there are the best,better than all those high priced restaurants,the street food vendors always have fresh stuff since they always sell out so fast and have to restock regularly while the high end branded restaurants would always stock on canned and refrigerated food stuff. Street food is usually fun.

      +Anuoluwapo Ajayi i know plenty of ppl who make food on street and sometimes they use products that should be kept in the fridge, but they don't have any, so it just stands for 1-2 days in normal temp. Usually the tempo is just right, but if not - they are not going to waste that... You just eat something they wouldn't make for themselfs. Keep that in mind.

And a message to @New York City Channel: I don t know where you get your info, but did you visit Europe? I'm from Belgium and went on Europe Tour (Paris, London, Berlin, Istanbul, Rome, Bacelona,etc) for months, and I can tell you, You will find in every country Asian restaurants. • @henvdemon
      @henvdemon 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Long what's so hard about washing the banana leaves thoroughly with cold water, steaming them killing all germs and then using them to serve food on?

    • @henvdemon
      @henvdemon 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Long i am being realistic, also it depends where he gets the banana leaves,
      he could always just pay some kids to clean the leaves for him in exchange for a few baht. it's risky cause they may screw up and not do it all the way. but if they do it correctly he'll ask them to do it again tomorrow. it saves him money from buying the styrofoam containers, he uses some of that to pay the kids. that in turn will help him make a little more money. just cause some don't do things like that properly doesn't mean all of them don't. am i wrong? i love street food, which is why i can say this. it depends on the vendor.

    • @henvdemon
      @henvdemon 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Long but part of why serving his pad thai in banana leaf is so good is cause the leaf itself will instill some of it's flavor into the noodles. the authority might let him if he's close enough to get them fresh on a daily basis. like if he's within 2 miles from getting his banana leaves i think they'd let him do it.

    • @scary00001
      @scary00001 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Alanviation You really need to calm down, don't sound so aggressive. I am also Thai and it reflects badly on Thailand. Just explain, you don't have to have a go. But yes, the stains you see on the pan are left from difference sauces and spice, not that it is unclean. Although I do admit there are some unhygienic street foods in thailand which everyone tries to avoid. As for this one, I personally think it was relatively clean.

    • @scary00001
      @scary00001 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Everyone on this post needs take a step back. I mean every food from different countries have their own uniqueness to it and many find it appealing. I don't agree with Original poster (op) that American cookings are bland. I mean you can't really compare, that's like saying an orange is better tasting than an apple, just because op doesn't like it doesn't make it bad. And whether it is healthy or not is really not the issue, there are many foods in thailand that are unhealthy. Thing is, American, Indian, Italian, Thai, every cuisine have gone through the process of local selection, the great tasting ones stay for others to taste and the bad tasting ones fade away, in other words they exist because people like them. I like every cuisine, and even if i don't who I am to say it is horrible when it is obviously not. I apologise for my fellow Thais for being disrespectful.
      *To Thais:* I understand you are trying to protect our culture but being hostile back isn't going to help. You don't like it when someone said they find some of our food unhygienic or disgusting, what makes you think it is a good idea to behave the same way. Some people simply don't understand why the pan was dirty, so simply explain to them. Thais are naturally very friendly to everyone, so lets keep it that way.

    Well Gosh, I didn't mean any disrespect or to press people's buttons. I just lamented to see the trademarks of the corporate West, i.e., plastics - petroleium products, take the place of nature ... being a farmer I eat lots of things right out of the garden dirt, just today blueberries and my friends eat without regard for insects and germs. Rules and regulations have taken away our natural lifestyle. When I lived in Hawaii I often cooked in banana leaves and it was so wonderful and natural. I have no problem with the vendor, I was citing the presence of the plastic after the magnificence of the beautiful food. But thanx now I feel for anyone strapped by regulations that constrict us from our connection to Nature.

    • @austin4211luckE
      @austin4211luckE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s super normal for Thai people to add sugar to their food. Sugar is a table condiment the same as like salt and pepper for us there. They also have vinegar and chili’s as well. In Thailand the food is made the same, same spice level no substations so you are supposed to alter the dish at the table for your taste with the condiment tray. Pad Thai is like the most basic noodle dish there so everyone has their own way they like to eat it.

    Hmmm, one thing to consider is that he used the same tongs to firstly pick up raw chicken (I think it's chicken anyway...) and then everything else. Cross contamination stir-fry anyone?

    • @alexven92
      @alexven92 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the things he picked up are cooked through so I don't see the issue?

    • @meagainok19
      @meagainok19 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue is that the tongs also touched other raw ingredients that are not cooked and also sitting in the hot Thailand climate, not refrigerated and is how you get food poisoning. It's very basic food handling safety and I can't believe you don't know that. Chicken is one of the main culprits of food poisoning as well.

    • @alexven92
      @alexven92 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      meagainok Naturally I know about salmonella but it's contained when in a cooler, which the ingredients are.
      Again, all the things he picked up with the tongs are cooked through. By your logic you shouldn't eat chicken because that causes food poisoning, right?

    • @alexven92
      @alexven92 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +meagainok So you make a big deal out of the fact that there's bacteria over the tofu? That inherently doesn't matter because the tofu is the same temp as the chicken, being refrigerated in the cooler. All those ingredients GET COOKED THROUGH so the bacteria get killed.
