    It's been a few weeks since World of Warcraft's latest retail expansion, Dragonflight, has dropped. It's still early days of course, but initial impressions give many more positive things to speak of than at least the previous 2 expansions.
    These is why Dragonflight is the version of WoW that looks as though it's really turned a corner for the MMO giant.

    The 60-70 blew by for me. It wasn't super tedious and drawn out. Dragon Riding really helped going from 1 quest to the next and the quests themselves and a really good variety. Once I get my main all geared I'm excited to run some alts through the story.

      @motoki MMOs are all about multiplayer. It makes no sense for the solo experience to take ages. Look at FF14, what a mess, it takes you 300 hours to get to the endgame and 295 hours of that is solo MSQ. That's not an MMO at that point it's an RPG with an optional multiplayer.

    When Wrath came out I thought Dragonflight would be the first expansion I would simply not play.
    I decided last-minute to give it a chance, and I'm so happy I did, I've genuinely been having so much fun in Dragonflight and it brings me back to the feeling of enjoying the game like I do when I played Classic Vanilla, Classic TBC, or Classic WOTLK. It's more of a "you play because you want to", not "you play because you have to", reducing a lot of the mandatory grinds and replacing it with optional grinding, genuinely so many good changes and I love it.

    What a huge improvement. This is the first time I've not been remotely hyped for a new expansion, I practically missed the entire first week, but it's the first expansion since Wrath that I actually want to log onto every day and enjoy playing *every* aspect of the game currently.
    I'm gobsmacked that, firstly, Blizzard actually U-turned on their design philosophy in such a major way - not just the design philosophy of borrowed power and throwaway systems from Legion through Shadowlands, but their attitude towards scale, progression, gating, complexity (especially talents and crafting), loot and more. Secondly I can't believe after the year they've had and after the trajectory of their last few expansions, that there's so much passion in this game. It's been painstakingly crafted, it's intricate and engaging in a way WoW hasn't been for over a decade.
    Once bitten, twice shy though - I still expect the first major content patch to make all the good DF launch stuff completely irrelevant and funnel us into a single new zone with crappy catchup gear and a gated, on rails progression system, and so I can't really relax properly into enjoying the game. Like most rational fans though I'd be more than happy to be proved wrong.

    I have been playing since 2005, First BfA happened, which was already bad, but then Shadowlands almost killed WoW for me entirely. I was ready to quit for good. Dragonflight is surprisingly fun. It feels like WoW has a soul again. It's not perfect, but man, this is so much better than what we had. And the best thing is, it's not just better because WoW was kind of shit in comparison, it's better because it's actually a step forward. The story is... decent. But it works because it just feels a lot more like home, like the Azeroth I missed.

      But is it the same grind for cosmetics as it was in shadowlands, I dont mind work for the stuff i want, but I will not do a shadowlands grind over again. And you can buy a wow token for real money and get gold in game, then you can gear for gold that is better than the content you are doing as casual player, so either is pay to win or they focus to much on selling wow token and not make more content for the game players can do.

      Yeah, makes sense to not compare it with BfA and Shadowlands when you talk about it being fun and a "step forward", but then the only positive things you mentioned in your comment are "The story is... decent" and " it just feels a lot more like home".
      That does not sound like a "step forward" to me.
      What it does sound like is Blizzard continuously capitalizing on players' nostalgia and delusions of reaching the same high their products once offered, and continuously getting away with it. It is total non-sense to me, yet I have to admit feeling envious of all the enthusiasm and positivity players are still able to exude. Well, at least in the writing form here on the internet, if it is ever to be considered a trustworthy source of information and not simply a way to cope.

    The thing about Dragonflight is flying. Basically, WOW or FFXIV doesn't allow you to fly in a new expansion until you have unlocked the area by some means. Here you need dragon flight to advance, so you get it early in the story line for your main and your subs.

    • @davidk7439
      @davidk7439 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And, it's *viscerally* more enjoyable and faster than default flying. The dragon isles aren't necessarily smaller than other zones on launch, but it's *much* faster to traverse between all 4 parts of it. Similarly, that flying feels much more involved, since you actually care about momentum and boosting, no matter how much vigor you have.
      I'm honestly concerned with the mobility creep, as it'll likely render regular flying mounts practically useless.

      Good job they streamlined it heavily to cater even more to the casual side of things. You can beat the story in 3 days and then all you have left really is back to the ol M+ push or doing arenas.. I literally beat the xpac and got all my PvP minus my boots in less than a month and then it donned on me wtf do I even do anymore outside of that? They killed open world pvp.. Destroyed acquiring allied races, streamlined leveling so much so you can go from lvl 1 to 70 in like 5 days, Streamlined M+ "Which it needed to be tuned down a bit" and then did the same with Arena gear cost.. You can not even fly like this outside of the Isle which they will most likely NEVER expand it further then that cause that is how lazy Bliz is.. This xpac only brought skill trees in my eyes but even has been foreshadowed now cause, I do not have nothing else to do. Its weird cause this xpac is a step forward but it is so fkin shallow in terms of content despite the content being good that it has brought its own issues with it. The issue is its just to streamlined I have had more to do in Singleplayer RPGs then this xpac..

  • @Knightgil
    @Knightgil ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The problem with WoW expansions is that they render the rest of the game irrelevant. So instead of WoW expansions adding more to the game, they SUBTRACT. Instead of having a world, you have a tiny sandbox of a game. Even the fact that instead of having multiple functional cities players were crammed into Org and SW since Cataclysm is telling. It would be a lot more fun to go to Silvermoon, Exodar, Shattrath, Thunder Bluff or Darnassus and see those places PACKED with players, than feeling like you have to go to the same old SW and Org because everything else is a desert. So until an expansion actually makes the whole world meaningful and relevant again, so that you can actually CHOOSE how to play instead of feeling the need to play a certain way or go to the same old specific places, until an expansion actually EXPANDS on the game rather than limit it, I will always see WoW as a game that has truly died a long time ago.

    This video perfectly encapsulates why Dragonflight is so widely lauded by the community this early after launch.
    I hope more people give it a chance, since I know “engagement” metrics on streaming platforms was way lower than Shadowlands’ launch; it’ll take time for people to trust WoW’s quality again, unfortunately.
    My personal favorite thing about Dragonflight overall has got to be all the gearing paths. I’m simultaneously engaging with *deterministic* gear systems via professions, PVP, raiding, dungeons, AND multiple open-world systems and it’s SUCH an amazing breath of fresh air! I can work on improving my character by any means I see fit, and can pick the right type of gear for the content.
    On a related note, the way they fixed PVP gearing is SOOOO good. After a bit of lowbie-geared rounds of Battlegrounds and weekly PVP quests, I was able to get fully geared up at a competitive level. They even solved the “what do I work on if PVP iLv is mostly close” issue by making the upgrade levels be for PVE content instead. And the crafted stuff is not only competitive with traditional currency-earned stuff; it’s equal or better depending on what you’ve personally earned and how skilled the crafter is.
    Simply fantastic!

None of that seems present thusfar, so I’d be willing to go as far as saying that the only thing Dragonflight needs to succeed over the next two years is pump out consistently timed content.

    2:26 I have to disagree right there, because there is something Blizzard can do to make players like myself appreciate retail: 1) More required group content outside of instanced dungeons and raids 2) have a more organic experience that isn't a cinematic carbon copy that every other player experienced. I prefer the older style of WoW where content required groups and cooperation. I don't like how WoW turned into a single player game where I was the main super hero of azeroth. Instead I want my character's story to be more organic, where I would eventually need help from other players. I don't like it when people tell me to play classic, because I like how expansive the retail world is. Currently there are 9 continents in Azeroth, while there are four other worlds aside from Azeroth. I like being in a huge world with multiple races and factions. However, WoW still feels small. Instead of players calling the Broken Isles by it's landmass name, they call it "The Legion Expansion". Make all continents relevant and prevent them from being outdated. Don't just make the newest expansion's continent the only relevant place where top players can go to. That is the third thing blizzard can do.

    • @vandakaii2893
      @vandakaii2893 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly their only goal for retail is to continue to streamline the game and make it as vapid as possible so that everyone can come in and do what they want from the get go and then quit next month cause they achieved what they wanted. Sadly this is not how MMO's should be working.. Or at the least is not how WoW should. I remember making that climb to the top and it taking me time to do it now you can do just everything in the game in about a months time and move on..

      You don’t have to wait, there is evidence WoW is going Free to Play since their player count is down 55% compared to other expansions after the first 30 days. It’s finally done and time for Blizzard to upgrade.
      You cannot ever judge a MMORPG by its launch. Reason for this is because over half the active player accounts are actively pursuing only one goal - make real life money. This can be done thru Bot farming new mats and inflating the AH, getting to max level before everyone and selling services, boosting people in PvP.
      But after about 30 days, people have bought the gold, paid for the gear, gotten boosted….and then the buyers are scarce.
      Once the buyers are scarce, RMT quit playing and either go back to their real jobs or to the next hype wave to get ready and extort it’s ingame Economy for Real money.

    It's too bad retails class design is so completely awful for anything even remotely resembling PvP.
    Classic really has its "structural" and obvious flaws (e.g., old horrible arena maps, PvE to PvP, no solo queue, no cross-server queues, too long time to level/gear up besides AV weekend, no catch-up cap, built in 30% dodge/parry, +resist/-hit talents/racials which are not possible to realistically gear around, rng non-static DR 15-20sec timers, awful abilities like heroism and attack-from-behind-only abilities), and it really shows, and it's awful that they havn't fixed at least the most aggregious things on that list in the remaster.
    However, the "core" class design in WotLK Classic, even with the flaws, is miles better and more suited for PvP - and this is the #1 thing of importance.
    Also, this is just DFs honeymoon phase. We'll see where it lands once we start nearing the end of the expansion.

There is no grind there is nothing to make you wanna log on no more.. They streamlined allied races, flying, pvp gearing, m+ gearing.... The biggest grind is mount and mog farming but, 96% of the playerbase does not even give a fk about mogging lol.. I was subbed for WotLKC for about two months but once I hit the gotta dedicate time to raiding wall, I fell off and canceled again. Dragonflight sounds amazing, but I'm not willing to sub for the experience. As a Game Pass subscriber, I'd absolutely play it casually with no strings attached because there are so many games I want to get through now that I'd only have time to play for a few hours or I can shift priorities around on my own terms.

    I will never understand how people unironicaly say that class design has changed. Almost every spec is copied over from Shadowlands with the only difference being able to pick and choose a bit more. You still hit like a wet noodle without cd's wich has been a major point of criticism for the last couple expansions now and as far as I know there hasnt been any changes to fix that problem. I guess its always been more of a problem in the PvP community since ur just forced to trade CD's there. But even in PvE it felt like I would always burn out realy fast after "learning" a class/spec, since executing ur burst in the right way and knowing exactly when to use it in any given dungeon or raid is pretty much all you need to know to perform well (excluding mythic raids/very high m+). Sorry for giving such a doomer-take here, I gotta admit pretty much everything they changed is for the better and Im realy hoping to see this trend continue going forward :)

    If your wanting to do mythic and your a decent player you can get onto mid mythic bosses comfortably on 2 nights. Some 2 night guilds get CE although they are usually ex hardcore raiders

    Gonna take a lot more than that to entice old veterans like me to come back. Never forget all the bad things blizzard have done in the past especially the lawsuit. I will never forgive them for what happened that day.

    The raid is extremely fun, however, trying to do it in a pug without voicecomms first few weeks, is gonna be next to impossible due to how much co-ordination you need on a few bosses.

    • @tdmc6428
      @tdmc6428 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Normal can be cleared with relative ease without voicecomms, the only wall I really hit was raszageth herself and that was mostly waiting for people to stop messing up

      I mean. The number of times I've wiped Sennarth... literally had one group where some of the dps (I was healing) were telling the healers they just needed to heal more. As they ignored literally every mechanic. Stood in the ice. Spread the ice up the stairs before we pulled boss up. Stood in webs. Tanks didn't point add away from raid.
      Etc etc.
      There are a few where pugs can absolutely be undoable because there is no quality control on who you get. Just have to leave and find a new one

    After 2 and a half expansions full of fecal matter, a generic carbon copy of BC/WOTLK formula expansion pack feels like a breath of fresh air so ofcourse it will be well recieved.

    Dragonflight feels like Shadowlands without the annoying chores. I've been enjoying dragonflight but the only real changes are talent trees, reworked professions, and dragon riding.

    Weird to finally read some positive stuff about DF. EVERYONE i talked to hates it and has already stopped playing 😂 we started as a group of 7 people - most of us quit after day one. Two stuck around for 3 full days, then went back to classic. It feels so empty and tedious. Like a single player game on easy mode

    I'm trying to trial for a new guild as well as level a rogue and warlock due to joyous journeys but Blizzard is teasing me with 50 eur dragonflight + 30 days of gametime promotion and I feel like I might have to give in lol, I've never played WoW past Cataclysm but the idea of already paying for a monthly subs and getting borderline two different MMOs doesn't seem that bad. I'm also quite curious how retail raiding and gear progression differs to TBC/WOTLK.

      its fun to level an alt and spend some new talent points or run some dungeons on my main. the best part is not falling behind so quickly because i wanna take a break. no heart of azeroth bs grind where i have to have all the nodes to do decent damage. all that matters is ilvl and skill

  • @TheALEXiSounds
    @TheALEXiSounds ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a classic andy for sure, but tried Dragonflight and it's just wayyy better than Classic.
    In 2 hours, I'll have gained exp for my dragon riding, unlocked a new recipe or sub talent in my profession tree, learned something about my talents, progressed through the story and dinged once or twice.
    In classic, 2 hours is like, a quarter of a level. You feel like you've done and achieved a lot more in retail.
