    hi there great video. i plan on buying a 2006 M5 veey soon and would like to know what key things should I look for mechanically before I purchase it. what should I have a mechanic check for me?

      If you don't mind asking what's the mileage on car you are considering? I saw, if memory serves me, a 2008 with 19k for 29k on Autotrader. I test drove one last week with 49K, it didn't 'thrill" me. Enjoy your M5

      I had a 2006 '56' reg for 18 months, sold last year. Only issue I had was a leaking oil cooler. £180 for brand new OEM cooler and 2 hours labour (front bumper has to come off). I'm not a mechanic and bought without warranty. Kept a few quid by just in case though.

      Yves Viaud rod bearings, rod bearings and ROD BEARINGS, SMG Pump and throttle actuator. But the rod bearings is the #1 thing. If you hear a knock it’s probably the bearings, if u decide to buy and get that work done make sure that they include new motor mounts bcuz not everyone does

    The worst part about the oil checking system is how unresponsive it is. Even if you are high/low on oil it takes a pretty long time for the vehicle to register, even if you force a check of the system using the stalk on the left side.
    The rest just kinda reads like a forum FAQ.

    Quick question: so I got rod bearing work done to my 06 E60 M5 and before replacing the bearings I was dumping a quart of oil in my car a week, after the bearing replacement, when I check the oil electronically it was reading 1.5, checked it 2 weeks after and same thing, so I was worried that the electronic reader was broken so I put a half qt of oil and checked it again and same thing 1.5, is that normal or is my reader broken.

    #6. Alarm 'bongs' go off for everything (as demonstrated on first startup), and the noise is the same across the board. So that 'bong' could be a 'red cog of death' SMG pump failure, which will cost $K to fix, or just be telling you the air temp has reached +3 deg. Once you've had a major failure, that bong makes your heart skip a beat every damn time. It is an awesome car though.

The only thing that is a problem is that in some country's fuel is really expensive. here its about 70 cents a liter. not too bad.

  • @andrewward9601
    @andrewward9601 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    He didn't mention the clutch, from BMW, cost me £2·5K, throttle actuators £1·2K, Traction control module £5K, including M Service labour and sundries, one bill from BMW cost me £12K! Fuel consumption is very VERY high, I couldn't get a better consumption better than 23MPG and can easily increase consumption to around 8 MPG, oil consumption is also high and it requires a expensive high quality synthetic race oil, eats tyres...... The list is endless, it's a very expensive car to operate and maintain but, as he said, that BMW Sauber bread race 🏁 engine is very VERY tuneable and the sound is out of this world......! Put some sensible exhaust system on it etc etc etc and you have one legendary M5, but don't expect it to be a cheap M5 to own, despite the cheap purchase price, it's UBER COOL BUT EXPENSIVE..... In my opinion, despite newer version's are faster and more powerful, it's up there on one of the best M5s on the list 📝📝

    Swee video man. Very goood info. wanted this car since 2008. Finally in a position to afford one. Will be buying wit low mileage becuase unlike some others, i truly believe this car will be a classic gem in years to come wit all the small turbo'd engines being stuck in all cars today. Info was real helpful. Am also ready to deal wit maintenance issues. Couple compromises for v10 unique power!

    I've done my oil changes and not had a problem with over filling?
    the car tells you when it's eaten the oil and refill by measuring the amount before topping up
    how is a quazi dry sump a problem?
    how is a large naturally aspirated engine a problem?
    that's pretty much the reason why people buy it in the first place

    These cars need to be driven and if you look around there are more issues with people that only put 6k miles a year than there are that put 20k a year. These cars need to be driven. As for oil the book in the glove box will tell you how much to put in... not really a problem for people who know cars and it is a perfect car. F1 family sedan with warranty. PERFECT

    When it reads 1.1 does it mean there is only 1 liter of oil in the engin ???

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No that means it is 1.1 litres over the minimum so there is still 8-9 litres in the engine. It is overfilled though and technically 0.1 litres should be removed.

    If you are not used to these cars as in the V10 M6 as well, you can easily overfill with oil because the oil you put in does not register right away, so you can keep looking at the electronic measure as in this video and STILL think it wants some more oil.
    You put more in and the result you can experience, and some dealers do not know this is what happens, the car chucks it out in a huge white cloud, It can take up to 60 miles to register the oil you have put in, preferably no more than 500ml as measured on side of plastic oil container. DO BE carefull, that is a lot of engine to mash!

      ***** It's for 2 years platinum warranty coverage. So I'm covered for everything except for paint chips. I feel like with foreign cars the warranty is always worth it. I also have a 2006 M6 I paid for the warranty for. Made my money back within 6 months after the vehicle needed 4200 dollars in work.

    That wasn't the biggest N/A engine BMW used in a production line.They had V12 engines that had 5.2 & 5.6 Liter displacement that were used in the classic 850csi. But nonetheless the V10 is the most popular in recent years, and it's truly an engine to marvel at. I own one actually :)

    The 1.1 ltr means over filled by 1.1ltr need to drain 1.1ltr out.
    The reason why it did not have dip stick is because it wanted you to keep the oil meter on the screen youve shown us, as e60 consumes oil. You are meant to add oil always at top arrow.
    In the case of the car you show us it exceed the top arrow by 1.1ltr, the car is over filled with oil as you shown us.
    The oil must be on the top arrow not middle, if the oil is ib middle the rod bearing loose some pressure.
    This oil suppose to consume oil the guage is to tell dricer when to top up to the top arrow when below should top us asap.

      I have an e90 m3 and love it. I've started thinking about the e63 m6, which has the same engine as yours.
      Not to worries about maintenance on engine that's granted ie do bearings and vanos, throttle body gears
      It's that smg gear box that I hear is a problem

    The oil system is designed by the BMW engineers and their service department to fill during services with know how exactly how much to pour in it and not for bush mechanics to have a go in the garage at home. The M5 E60 was no poor mans car retailing here in Australia $240000 , you can buy them now with 60000 kilometers on the clock for less then $60000, but there is no way i would be stuffing around with them in the garage very expensive toy to be fiddling with. There is nothing cheap about M5 or M3, M4 or any of them.
