  • Here is Burt Reynolds original ending to the movie Stick. Burt's version was a far superior movie to the one that was released after the studio insisted on a load of reshoots and additional action scenes in the hope of better Box Office, ruined a great movie and turned it in to a poor one!!

    Wow, I didn't even know there was another version?? This was the only version I've seen. Love the ending. I saw an interview where the studio could not get the picture insured unless Burt and Dar agreed to do this scene last, because it was so dangerous. No CGI, no trick photography, no air bag at the bottom. Dar is falling backwards with a hydraulic cable attached to his pants that arrested his fall when got close to the ground. I also read where he asked Burt if he should empty the gun on the way down - Burt said no, just do the stunt without killing yourself, and he emptied it anyway because he said that's what this character would do! Dar Robinson - best stuntman who ever lived.

      Yes, how true, the man knew how to fall..I love this stunt!, but the jaw dropping one in Sharkey's machine is still my favorite....He even does a great smaller scale one in another fav, doubling for Oliver Reed in Burnt Offerings...and that stunt is shown close up from the bottom POV.......priceless.

      It wasn't just an alternate ending, it was a completely different movie from the facts I gathered. Everything with his daughter and the bad guy that kidnaps her were all part of the re-shoots Universal forced Burt to make. Annie Potts played a character that was completely cut out of the film. Her whole story line was left on the cutting room floor. Not only was the story completely changed, but so was the soundtrack. Universal forced Burt, who was very ill at the time and not willing to put up a fight, to change the tone of the film by making the soundtrack more Miami Vice. Burt has said that if he felt better then Stick would of been the movie he set out to make. But if you remember, this was right after the movie City Heat where Burt got into a career changing accident during a stunt gone wrong. The tabloids ran stories about Burt dying of AIDS because of his rapid weight loss and drug addiction when in truth he suffered from TMJ. He couldn't chew, got constant headaches, was popping a ton of percs just to dull the pain enough so he could finish the movie. All in all, it was probably the worst time of his life. I only wish the studio let Burt put out the film he wanted to. I am sure it would of been better than what they did release. It could not have been worse.

      Jason Thompson, great comment, you know your facts on point, & I can tell your a real fan of Burt Reynolds as I was, He made some bad ass films in his day, & came back with Boogie Nights!! That movie was great, he should have won with that part, he was robbed.

    • @jasonthompson-zq4js
      @jasonthompson-zq4js 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks. I am a huge Burt Reynolds fan. Shamus, Sharkey's Machine, Hooper and Switching Channels are among his very best. And even though he was fantastic in Boogie Nights, I thought his real comeback performance was as an old broken down thief in 1989's Breaking In. I am sure you have seen it, but just in case you haven't, you really should. It and especially him are quite good. A funny thing about Burt and it's happened to a bunch of other stars, too...like Sly and Arnold...people tell them how funny they are in their action movies and that makes them think that they can pull off an entire comedy...truth is, they can't. Comedy is sooo hard to do. Probably the hardest genre to pull off correctly. There is no room for error in a comedy. You can screw up something simple and if the laugh isn't there, then the entire film suffers. In Burt's case, his loyalty to friends really destroyed his box office performances. Saddling up with Hal Needham was his biggest downfall. It was both a blessing and a curse. The first Smokey and the Bandit was such a huge hit (and rightfully so) that they continued to make films together. And for every decent one there was an equally shitty one. Smokey One led to Smokey two. Hooper led to Stroker Ace. And Cannonball Run led to Cannonball Run two. See what I mean. At a time when Burt should of been focusing on the right role in the right script, he was partnering up with his friends and cashing in HUGE paydays. It was the worst thing for his career. No one wanted to see him sing with Dolly or romance Goldie Hawn. City Heat was suppose to be a sure fire hit, but he played it for laughs insteada taking it somewhat seriously. The original script by Blake Edwards was quite good. Whatever comedy was in it, was comedy that stemmed from human behavior and NOT comedic situations! Even before his "accident", the writing was on the wall for Burt's career. It was like watching a car crash. You could see it coming a mile a way. Now, had he been feeling 100 %, Burt might have been able to correct the course of his career, but because he was sick there was NO WAY he was able to fix things. This is why we got stuck with Malone and Heat (another time when a great script was made into a crappy film - written by Bill Goldman who wrote Butch Cassidy, The Princess Bride and All the President's Men, just to name a few). I have to wonder, if Burt was in top form during these years, what films would he have really made? Anyway...since his passing, I have given a lot of thought to Burt Renyolds' career. I mean the guy made "The Longest Yard" probably one of the BEST football movies. And the ending of The End might just be one of the funniest monologues I have EVER heard in film history. Burt will be missed. Thankfully, though, he left us with a large body of work to rummage through. So many HITS, so many MISSES. I am grateful that one of his final films was, in my opinion, among his hits. And if you haven't seen The Last Movie Star you are missing out on a truly good Burt Renyolds performance.

    Dar Robinson's character Bunny Eyes was to me the most evil character ever and ever since this movie came out I always felt he was never given a more prestigious honor in Hollywood especially for his famous stunts, that in itself alone was no mild achievement. I hope one day Hollywood would see what a special actor Dar Robinson really was and hopefully some actor can recreate Dar's character from this Cool movie, his like the Joker just more intriguing and perfectly sinister... This was shot after Burt had his jaw broken filming City Heat with Clint. He had trouble eating solid foods, had massive headaches, vertigo, light sensitivity, TMJ, etc. Hence why he is very thin in this film (and in City Heat). Many Industry people were convinced he had AIDS and refused to work with him after this. It was a REALLY terrible time for him. That injury almost ruined his career. It most definitely (negatively) altered his career/life forever. He also found out he had lots of false friends who left him as well. Very sad.

    Interesting to be able to see this ending, but the producers made the right choice in editing. This ending darkens an otherwise balanced movie, in my opinion. Alls Burt had to do was stand by and watch a drug addled Chucky send himself and Moke over the side. Still think Moke went too easy. Wow, Burt really got screwed over by his studio & here's the proof. Moke was the most interesting thing in the re-cut and once he lets go of the rails the movie should have ended. By messing with that they created a flop that tarnished Burt's reputation, lost millions of unearned revenues from people who didn't go, pissed off Elmore Leonard and created a half-shit movie with very little re-viewing appeal, other than the Moke scenes. Makes it even more tragic that Dar Robinson never got to play another role with as much to do. He is excellent, reminds me of the killers from classic Spaghetti Westerns. But I am still not sure why Chucky goes over the rails. Was it just too much momentum?

      After reading the book she would be Barry Braun's side girl, Rorie aka Aurora; Barry also goes by a different last name. Annie Potts character's name is the assistant to movie producer Firestone which plays into the movie pitch that is currently in the released movie.
      Even this ending is not as good as the book's ending, if they had kept Tammy Wynette as the ex-Wife maybe Reynolds could have done the book's ending.

    The only thing different was that Stick was later seen driving down the highway. She was coming the other way. They meet and she rides off with him. It didn't ruin the flick at all.

      The apartment scene is different, too. The release I saw Candace wasn't there and you don't see the part where Stick jams the guy's leg in the car door - they don't show how he gets to the apt, he's just there right in time to help Chucky die.

    It was great, right up until the smarmy music. What were they thinking back then?

    This movie looks like it had a £5 budget and got all those actors from a Butlins holiday camp.
    I’m glad 123 people in the comments enjoyed the movie.

    Candice was NOT good in these scenes. I still can't make up my mind if I love or hate Charlie Durning in this role?

    Burt wasted his talentz. Not for lack of trying but post SATB, he basically phoned in his acting. Every scene was lunch money. He worked often so a good one would creep in but most of his flicks later in his career were turkeys. He did shine in the fictionalized auto biographical flick at the very end where he confronts his younger self. Turning down TERMS OF ENDEARMENT ended up making him very remorseful. It made Jack Nicholson relevant again for the next ten years.
