S1 - Ep 268 - Postmasburg - An Interesting Mining Town in the Northern Cape!

  • The drive from Kathu through to Postmasburg was very scary. The big trucks and cars were driving pretty wild. At least we made it through safely. On the road we came across the Lohatla military training facility and we just had to stop at the vehicles on display. Then we arrived at an interesting mining town in the Northern Cape, Postmasburg. We found the town to be very busy but it had an intriguing history. The stop where they loaded the iron ore and manganese onto the trains was really cool to see. It was a good visit to Postmasburg. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #postmasburg #kathu

      Incredible to read that you went to that very swimming pool and it cost you 5c to enter! 😳🏊🏼 It must've been a great facility for the townsfolk back then, especially in the warm weather which the area experiences very often I believe! 🥵 I'm glad our video could take you back to happy times in Postmasburg! 😁🚙

      @@DustBugsTravel Must say the 5 cent felt expensive back then, especially knowing how many chappies you could buy with it, but I was so hooked onto swimming.. you don't even register how hot it gets.. just run from shade to shade with your bare feet on the gravel :)

    Such beautiful clouds! But oh my! How people drive!! I would have hated that. That tank looks really kwaai! ??!! What has happened to our army then? Yay! A choo-choo! I think its the iron ore making everything pink, it does have a reddish colour. I love the old graves. Thanks for showing us the railway and the mining trucks. Grizzly bars? But not bears! I have always seen Postmasburg on the map and wondered what it looked like. Seems a nice peaceful town. The best was once again the sky. Those clouds just stole the show! Lovely 3D effect. Thank you again.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't seen a tank like that up close in ages, it made me think back to our mighty Defence Force back in the day! 🇿🇦 Army officials stopped for a chat just as I had scrambled to the top of the tank for a pose and a pic, just to make sure we weren't removing any metal parts. 😳 They explained that the entrance to the facility had now been moved 5km or so further back, so it seems as if it's still in operation. We see grizzly bars often on 'Gold Rush' where they mine gold in Alaska and Canada! 😁 The clouds on this trip were once again stunning, so glad you also notice and enjoy them! ☁️🚙

    Hi you two! Thanks for this very interesting ride under blue skies with REAL clouds. I hope you weren't chased with a rainstorm again on your way out of town.
    The town looks so good with all the greenery around in the barren Kalahari. Pity about that mess at the green pond. It doesn't seem to lack anything. Schools are there, churches are there, magistrates offices are there, shops in abundance etc. It is amazing how mining can build a town and keep it going. One sees the same in Klerksdorp and surrounds in NW Province. It was so good to see a functional railroad station, even though it is probably only for movement of ore. But maybe one can beg a lift?
    Btw. the stone church you saw is in fact the second Reformed Church building there. The first one was completed in 1891 (then still in Blinkklip), but was badly damaged in the Anglo-Boer War. The one we see now was finished in 1906.
    Thank you again for the beautiful video exhibit of our beloved country.
    If you are now moving nearer to civilization, please
    Keep safe!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This time the skies stayed bright blue with cottonwool clouds, there was no punishment! 😁☀️ I thought that green area with the pond and willow trees could be cleaned up very nicely to provide a wonderful area for townsfolk to relax and have picnics, etc. I was also saddened by all the litter in the pond! 😥🗑️ One day I may just ask for a train ride on an actual moving train, as long as Sonia will pick me up at the next stop! 🚉 Thanks for the additional info on the Reformed Church, we thought it a fantastic example of brilliant stonework and so fitting to be in the town that got its name from the founding member of the Reformed Church! 🚙💒

    Did a camp at Luhatla in '92. Always liked being in the veld, was the best part. Was at Riemvasmaak (outside Upington) in 1990. ‘een kostelijken hoeksteen’, ik dacht even, dat is leuk bedacht maar het staat echt zo in de Statenbijbel vertaling. Weer wat geleerd via jullie. Dat vers van Jesaja kent nog de mooie toevoeging: ‘wie gelooft, die zal niet haasten’. Video’s kijken van DustBug is steeds weer een heerlijk vorm van onthaasten 😊. Prachtig dat de functie van landdrost nog bestaat in ZA, al gaat die klaarblijkelijk niet over het beheer van het zwembad en het plantsoen … Ook mijn compliment voor het steeds weer bezoeken van oude begraafplaatsen. Wonderlijk dat het toch altijd een beetje ontroert, ook al ken je de mensen niet aan wie mogelijk niemand meer denkt terwijl ze toch ooit zo levendig waren als wij zelf.

Their function is to manage the lower court system which deals with civil and less serious criminal cases. Thank you for visiting the town of Postmasburg with us! 😁🚙

    Hi guys another place to add to my education the tanks and armour car ( eland) great you definitely look the part on the tank Justin . Lovely to see the trains in service very busy town with a lot of history Sand people mining back in ad 700 ! The old stone church with buttresses stunning loved the loading ramp for the train carriages. Its really surprising how green the area is. The London missionary society were definitely busy in these towns. Thanks for another great video cheerio till the next one. Just a note about Huguenots there was a large amount in Whitechapel area in London where they had silk businesses two streets Silk Street and Fleur-de-lis Street later in history famous for Jack the ripper
