  • As has been happening more frequently nowadays, we ended up travelling into the night again on our way to Prieska. but to be honest we enjoyed the beautiful sunset and the landscape which has amazing light at that time of the day. Crossing over the Orange River as the sun had set was absolutely awe-inspiring! It was good to see the workers cleaning the streets at night as we drove through this town on the southern bank of the Orange River. It really is a very clean town. We arrived at the farm where we were spending the evening but were so tired after the long day that we had supper and hit the sack immediately. The next morning we were up early and started exploring Prieska. What a gorgeous town, there was so much to see and enjoy. The old locomotive at the station, the fort on the hill, the view of the Orange River and the golf course and so much more. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #prieska

    We stayed in Prieska, more than half a century ago. My father was an accounting clerk with South African Railways, and worked at the station. I've been back a number of times, the last time about ten years ago. Your video brought back many memories, thank you so much.

      The station building is no more, but fortunately no-one can take away all your special memories. Thank you for sharing a little bit of your history with Prieska with us. 🚉 I'm glad our video reminded you of special times in your life. It was our first visit to the town and we thought it was a great place. 😁🚙

      It was fantastic to drive there at that time of the evening. On a gravel road with magnificent scenery on both sides of the road and not another car in sight! We're happy to take you back to the Northern Cape in our videos until you can hit the road again yourself! 🤩🚙

    Hi you two! The approach to the town was everything I could wish for. Gravel road, a living stone on the roadside, beautiful rocky hills and an amazing drive into the sunset in the faraway clouds. Thank you!
    I don't remember much of the surrounds of your overnight place. What I won't forget are the morning CUPPAS!
    What struck me of the town was its peacefulness and spaciousness, especially the view over the golf course but also in the streets and the modern shopping part. They are clearly moving forward, without forgetting their history and heritage. The close up of the fort was very interesting, so also the old loco. Those were the days!
    Thank you for taking me along again.
    Looking forward to the next trip.
    Keep safe!

      I was just too happy that the living stone was out of harm's way and we could continue on our way without any interference from our side. 😍🐢 As you probably know by now, we're not keen to travel after dark, but it's just so gorgeous at dusk and crossing the Orange in that twilight zone, was just phenomenal! I promised you cuppas and I'm gonna give you cuppas! 😁☕ I'm so glad you also enjoyed Prieska, it was a very rewarding visit for us and we loved every moment we spent in this peaceful and clean town. 👌

    Prieska... a beautiful well kept town, and that bird's eye view of the town is very impressive. And that inpressive railway station is a gem...I googled it and saw that it was part of the railway link to Namibia. Quite interesting but I dont know if I am allowed to put up links here...so I left well alone. Very nice footage thanx.

      I agree, Prieska is a great town altogether! 👌 We found it clean and neat and the folks are friendly and welcoming! You're welcome to post links in your comments, as long as they are relevant to the particular video. It won't appear immediately under the video though since it goes to comments for review first. I had to put that measure in place because sometimes inappropriate links were posted in comments, which I can't allow on our channel. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Glad you enjoyed our visit to Prieska. 😁🚙

    Great captivating video as usual. So sad about the old railway station. So many of these fine solid buildings are being neglected and wasted everywhere, while they could still be useful for warehousing or accommodation. That tank in the fort was obviously for water storage. Also looking at all the disused rail lines all over your country, there must be millions of miles of them, they could be pulled up and recycled, as they were in England for instance, and be a valuable source of steel.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed our video of Prieska! 😁🚙 I had absolutely no idea that that container in the fort was for the storage of water, it was certainly not that obvious to me! 🤷🏼‍♂️ It was indeed sad to see the station that have fallen into disrepair like that, but that old loco made us smile. It must have been such a stately engine back in the day! 😍🚂 I think if the tracks weren't as heavy as they are, there wouldn't have been any left now already! 😨

    What glorious clouds! There is something so special about the evening light. The place where you stayed over is truly lovely. So you managed to sniff out the station! Looking sad but must have been really humming in its day. And I got a choo-choo! Beautiful old locomotive. The view from the koppie is magnificent, and that old fort really looks solid! So glad you decided to go inside after all. So interesting. I think that container might have been to store ammunition? The school principle who died so young could have died from a flu or measles epidemic. There were a few of them around in those days. And it was before he modern vaccinations and anti biotics. A very interesting town, and tortoise thrown in for free!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed! As much as we're not keen to travel after dark, the late afternoon / early evening light is always spectacular and this evening was no different! The fact that we crossed the Orange River at twilight was just crazy special! 🌄 I was wondering how excited you were going to be about the choo-choo! What a charming old man he is, we didn't want to leave! 😍🚂 It's very possible that that steel container was for ammunition. I have absolutely no idea and even thought it could've been part of the floor structure for the soldiers to stand on to reach the shooting holes. 🤷🏼‍♂️ You're most likely correct in that the young Principal passed away from an epidemic of some kind, so sad! Glad you enjoyed Prieska with us! 🚙🐢

    Beautiful church building. So sad about the railway station (countrywide) Not to start a conversation but justI don't understand how this was allowed to happen. Fond memories of Prieska. Travelled up there to hold tennis clinics in the 90s. Hospitality was incredible. Also played in a cricket match against the local club in the 70s. Their captain of the day, if I remember correctly, was a teacher, Martin Carr. Those were good times and those were the days my friend. Keep travelling!!!!!

I can remember there used to be one in front of Bloemfontein station but dont know if its still there. Pity the railways no longer work. Loved that fort made of that lovely stone. A lovely quiet town, very good to see it so green. Thank you for taking me to see it.

    Guys , I really enjoyed the Prieska episode . The cemetery is especially interesting . The school principal WS van Heerden who died at age 21, that's most unusual . The other grave you showed of Leopold Stein , is a Jewish grave stone . On top , written in Hebrew letters is the following :"The lord gives and the Lord takes away". Your videos are wonderful . Thanks . Eric

      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the translation of the Hebrew on the gravestone, I really appreciate that! 👌🏻🏛️ We also thought that the Principal who passed away at such a young age, was particularly tragic. Another viewer mentioned that it may have been from a measles or other epidemic, which would make sense. Super sad. 😥 We appreciate you coming to Prieska with us! 😊🚙

    The ossewa weel was create by the FAK as a emblem for 100 year celebration of the Great Trek. Also part of the coat of arms in the Ossewa Brandwag (they was not Nazi-sympathisers) established in 1939 as a cultural organization who oppose the government of Jan Smuts. The "weel" also became part of the old National Party's emblem in 1948.....who fiercely opposed the OB

    Hello! How lovely to find this - I grew up in Prieska, matriculated from Hoërskool Prieska in 2017, and I still see it frequently as my folks are there. I'm quite proud of our little town - apart from the national load shedding, we don't have any problems with water, electricity or potholes like some other little towns. I'm so glad you could see it now after the last few years' good rain. It's really lovely and green.
    The oldest building in town is part of the Prieska museum, though I'm not surprised if you couldn't go in, if it was during the weekend. I also don't know what that rock is, lol, but I know it's not tiger's eye! We took photos at the train station with that locomotive when I was 14 and it still looks exactly the same! 😂
    Ek mis dit sommer - groete aan al die mense, vriende en die beste bure in die wêreld 😊 en Mamma en Philip!! Die Paarl kan nie vanaand kers vashou by my ou tuisdorpie nie 🥺💛
    Thanks for coming to visit and the lovely video! Good luck with your travels.

    “It’s no more, i see”, dat is een krachtige samenvatting der dingen door Sonia. Een terugkerend item in de video’s over meerdere zaken … doch om het in jullie sfeer te beleven, moest ik lachen want je ziet: je krijgt er ook veel voor terug. Zoals met je eigen auto over het perron scheuren, dat mocht vroeger vast niet 😅🚗. De Dutch Reformed Church laat zich kennelijk niet uit het veld slaan, die lijken in elk stadje nog fier overeind te staan en nog steeds in functie te zijn. Altijd indrukwekkend, de overblijfselen uit oorlogen, zoals dat fort en de Anglo-Boer graven. Zoveel jonge mannen die moedig waren en ongetwijfeld ook vaak bang. Zelfde rillingen liepen over mijn rug als toen ik bijvoorbeeld in België het Verdun monument bezocht. Mooi dat jullie aan alle partijen eer bewijzen! De dagelijkse start met die kopjes koffie doet mij overigens vermoeden dat er enig Nederlands voorouderlijk bloed door jullie aderen vloeit?? Althans een Nederlander kan niet zonder koffie in de ochtend 😊☕️

      While we're very often saddened by the decline we see on our travels, you're 100% correct and the beauty that is still out there for us to find and enjoy, usually makes up for the sadness. We've come to love stations and their past, so are always drawin to them and I'll drive wherever I safely can to get a better and closer view. 😁🚙 I'm glad to hear that you're also touched by monuments and graveyards dedicated to those who lost their lives, whether it be in battle or otherwise. I feel it's important to at least tell some of their stories. 🏛️😥 Neither of us, as far as we know at least, have Dutch descendants, but we haven't studied our genealogy in detail, so really don't know for sure. 🤷🏼‍♂️ We do need that coffee to get going in the mornings though, regardless of who our descendants were! 🤣☕

    Interesting place but all is gone . Knew an outjie that came from there when I was a child . Wonder where every body went.

      I didn't think all was gone at all! We saw some pretty interesting stuff. The station is a shadow of its former self, but we really enjoyed the rest of the town. 😊🚙 Perhaps your old buddy is still there, it may be time for a visit to the Northern Cape! 😁

    Slowly watching my way through your videos - Loving them! That round rock looks very much like an iron meteorite, but can’t be sure!

    My my, during the travels of my youth, in the 1950's, this was a dust spot in passing. Only dirt roads from SWA to near Johannesburg; paradise for you back then already. Karasburg, Upington, Kakamas, Douglas, Marydale, Prieska - all names I recall. Sometimes we would go visiting in Kimberley, so Hopetown in passing. Would be amazing to retrace the footsteps, although a huge difference in the passing of 60 years. Maybe old photographs would do it. Great stuff.

      If you have old pics, I'd definitely go dig them out to see what the present-day towns look like compared to all those years ago! That would actually be quite cool to see, albeit very sad as well to see the decline which occurred over the years! 😥 I can only imagine having only gravel roads to travel on, that would be pure bliss. Not everyone is happy to drive slowly on gravel though, so that would take the enjoyment out of it for slowcoaches like ourselves! I'm glad our video reminded you of good old times! 🚙😁

    Hi guys agree with Sonia beautiful peaceful town the drive in on gravel road so atmospheric amazing views and African sunset drive to your accommodation gave me the feeling I was there and the memories I have driving to farms to work on TV antennas your accommodation was great and a pool. The train station with the steam train amazing love you driving on the platform imagine the travelers crossing the foot bridge. What a surprise the Fort on top of the koppie and made of tigers eye only in South Africa the views stunning with golf course and the town so nice the school sports day. I noticed a old vw beatle just before the oldest building with all the old farm equipment. The church was on a grand scale with the cape Dutch style. The cemetery is so interesting also the reference to Jewish people again glad to see someone is trying to fix it up good on them 👍 thanks for another great video cheerio till the next one

      We had a long haul ahead of us that evening, so we knew we were going to be on the road after dark, but the landscapes and the evening and later night sky were so rewarding. 🌄 Like you, I always imagine passengers on the platform and at the ticket office, I can't get those images out of my mind whenever we visit a station! 🚉 I love your eye for detail, you don't miss a single thing in these videos of ours. I'm so glad you hop on board each time and share your thoughts, thank you! 😁🚙

      In case you don't know this yet, we don't visit a town just to show the town. We look for things and places we find interesting in and around the town and include those in our videos for those who will also enjoy them. 😁🚙 Entirely your choice to watch! 🤷🏼‍♂️

      It really is a wonderful town! 👌🏻🚙 We were particularly saddened by that old steam locomotive, the station must've been busy at some point, judging by the buildings and how many tracks there were. 🚂😥

    Prieska - A name to remember if I manage to get to the Northern Cape again. What a beautiful town with some amazing history. That cemetery looks so interesting. I would love to re-visit Augrabies Falls again so, health permitting, I have to make a plan for later this year.
    Thank you for sharing this video. Stay safe and continue to enjoy your travels.

      Prieska is most definitely worth a visit when you visit our shores again! 🚙🇿🇦 It's a lovely town and you'll have a good time exploring the cemetery and many other things in town which may interest you. 🏛️ I wish you good health so that you're in a position to travel back to the southern tip of Africa again later this year. ✈️
