  • A review of the Holy Bible ESV (English Standard Version) with Apocrypha, Anglicized Edition. Produced by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, this British import is a handsome Bible.
Containing an Anglicized revision of the 2016 ESV text, it adds a certain British "colour", as it were, while giving God's word the "honour" it deserves.

I do like the cover and sewn binding. I am not much for the ESV. However, I am passively looking for an ESV with Apocrypha for my brother-in-law for Christmas. Their household is an ESV only house (similar to a KJV only type, but not as extreme...yet). This may be an option, if it is reasonably priced.

Bought this. I use the KJV for private devotion but wanted to use an ESV for bible study. Thank you for the review.

I dig the cover art on both! It's interesting there being an Anglicized ESV w/ Apocrypha - seems like a further attempt to reach Anglicans and Catholics on the other side of the pond with an alternative to the NRSV. I'm not big on the ESV myself, but there's little doubt it's quickly becoming something of a standard Bible, at least as much as one translation can be these days!

I think Crossway are seeking full spectrum global domination. There's now an ESV-CE (Catholic Edition), and a Cornerstone Edition, published, surprisingly, by Cambridge. The dioceses of Scotland and England & Wales are both switching to the ESV-CE for their Lectionary Readings, maybe next year. Currently they use the RSV-CE. That will probably mean changes to the Divine Office (called The Liturgy of the Hours in the US) as well as the Missal. I've tried (and failed) to get into the ESV. My go-to easy read is the NKJV. Pity Thomas Nelson never translated the Apocrypha .

It's somewhat funny: the ESV and NRSV are not that far apart, at all. Yet conservatives and liberals, mainliners and evangelicals tend to use them (sometimes) to draw up battle lines.
I hereby commit to give some attention to the NRSV, in the name of inter-translational outreach.

@@DavidWilson-hd6iz was hoping you'd chime in, David. Thanks! Such intrigue and hidden machinations in the cutthroat world of Bible translating.
(Which, only being slightly facetious: from Tyndale to today, not a few have lost their heads and lives in this business.)

@@ma-mo Funny enough for me, I was raised Mainline where I was given Evangelical translations like the NIV, and then as adult attending an Evangelical church I discovered and read the NRSV.

British Spinal Tap ESVs go up to 11.
There's a review for the ESV Readers Bible at Amazon UK where the reviewer complains about the amount of typos in it, saying that the letter "u" is missing in several words. Not sure if it's British humour / humor or not.
    Edit: Here's the review...
2.0 out of 5 stars Spelling mistakes throughout

I was really excited when this arrived.
I read the preface and... there was a spelling mistake.
I have had a quick flip through, and there are spelling mistakes littered throughout the text itself.
e.g.: according to this Bible, 'Saul clothed David with his armor [sic]'.
Indeed, the press seems to have been very short on 'u's, as they are often missing.
The idea of having a Bible that reads like a normal book is a really good idea.
It's really disappointing that the editors have been so lacking with regards basic English.
Please will someone let me know if there is a properly-edited version of this?

I was just re-watching this, talking myself into buying a copy. About 5:45 you mention the ghosting. Maybe you know this already, but if you put a black sheet of card / paper behind the page, it reduces the ghosting.

It's a fine Bible, and I use it regularly. I do still struggle with reading it in low light, but that's the fault of my own eyes. This really is one of my favorite Bibles, for form factor, unique cover, translation and inclusion of the deuterocanonical books. Very much still recommended.
