I love The New Jerusalem Bible! It's, honestly, my favorite translation. But, I gave my copy to a young teenager who was newly baptized and without a Bible.

I have a copy of the blue one. I'm not a praticising Roman Cathlolic I actually want to convert to Judaism just like the actress Felicity Kendall did 40 years ago. She was born & raised as a Roman Catholic. The Torah is quite different from the Old Testament though.I always thought Roman Catholics read from the King James Bible like the Protestants. Now I realize both denominations all worship, pray & read from different bibles. 😊

I really dig the layout of the JB - maybe just move the refs to the inside to get the main text away from the gutter. I'm keeping an out for one! Mostly I just come across "reader's editions" that don't have the notes, which I want. I'm not concerned about them being liberal or conservative - I like a mix of both in my library. Continuing to pray that you may heal and be able to hold that JB with both hands again soon!

I think the NLT Catholic Holy Bible Readers Edition is also double column. Which doesn't really explain anything. Apparently some people have problems reading long sentences and lose their place. The Readers Bible I use is a hardcover edition of the NKJV you showed. I love it. That's partly because lots of letters and numbers in a reference text "scratch my eyes" and distract me.

Great post sir. Thanks to watching your review I bought the CTS (Catholic Truth Society) standard edition as I live in 🇬🇧 . The font is bit small but I wear glasses to read. But lay out is single column and so readable for a newbie .

Ah. An anti-readers edition, perhaps. The Doubleday Readers Edition continues the single column tradition. And it's often found in a paperback at very low prices. I had for a while a compact readers edition which was quite wonderful. For some strange reason, I have it no longer.

While you will indeed find that the NJB translation tends more towards the literal than does the JB, it loses its edge by incorporating, albeit at a relatively mild level, gender-neutral language that was NOT present in the original (1966) JB. I have the NJB "full-sized" edition (1985), comparable to your JB, with ALL the book intros, footnotes, cross-references; it has the single column format you so like, with verse numbers in the margins. I've owned the NJB since 1987; I have a love/hate relationship with it, due mainly to its gender-neutral language, however restrained it may be. The notes are indeed more liberal than those in the 1966 JB.
And while I do not own or have online access to a RNJB, I have no plans to acquire one because it's even more gender-neutral in its translation and continues its leftward swing in its notes. Admittedly, from what I've gleaned online, there was an attempt at being even more literal than the 1985 NJB, and maybe it succeeded, but that would likely be its only strong point, IMHO. Also, it removed the name "Yahweh" from the OT, breaking with its predecessors.

It would have to be from a used bookseller. I see many editions on ebay, for instance. Luckily there are many still out there!
