His descriptive prose takes you to those fabled places of Victorian wilds like no boys own adventure stories can. I feel like I'm actually there riding under an endless sky with yakob beg

The bright lights in my 75 years of life, aside from Greek Stoics, have been: Lord Chesterfield, Voltaire, 'Mark Twain', Henry Lewis Mencken, and Flashman. The Gods have been kind to me, recklessly sharing wisdom about human nature.

I must say that I would have found it a great tragedy to have never had the pleasure of meeting Flashman. A biannual event for me for the rest of my life lol so wonderfully unPC. Hehe poor Elspeth lol

Why the devil are Flash and Scud worrying how to get away from the house when the Russians’ plan explicitly included letting them get away safely?

Flashman, in 1854: “The Russians fought as badly and as stupidly as they nearly always do.”
Oh how true those words are even today…. 😂
